This is bordering on ridiculous. Am getting

Posted: Dec 5, 2014

by any thing now days. I have seen this same ad for several months now by Wal-Mart. It shows a father (mother in background in kitchen) and teenage girl sitting next to her father. The father gives the girl a new phone and the girl overjoyed about what she is able to do, text, snap, twit, and so on. Fast forward now- Wal-Mart is taking the ad down. Why you might ask? Being insensitive. In the ad the young girl grabs her father around her neck, holding up the phone and taking selfie of them so excited and he says "I can't breathe." Old ad, people are offended now. I feel like hard to breathe now because everyone is offended in some way or another. ;

you might be right in some instances - but not this one

I think you've picked an incredibly poor example of a case of "people being overly sensitive." They were right to remove this phrase from the ad or ad itself, in light of this horrendous climate of what seems to be obvious police gross misconduct, in what appears to be a murder in progress caught on tape for the world to see at the hands of the police, whose latest victim's last words were "I can't breathe."

This ad has been out for months and by the way - the guy did not die then

in the video but later in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, had a heart attack. I am not overly sensitive but am really so tired of everything being taken out of text (as this is) and then people having to say sorry that we put out a perfectly good ad months ago and now people find offensive. Everyone is taking offense at everything and I can't breathe anymore. I am not saying police might have been less aggressive in the instance you speak of but I will tell you this, if a police should ever tell me something I am not going to refuse what they say, never.

Wal-Mart's choice--as many things as they - do wrong ---

what does it matter if they want to spend more money on their advertising campaign. I don't recall particularly enjoying the ad and feeling deprived it is gone, and if it might offend some, which it might, if you lived this social issue, i.e. watch, participate (chant "I can't breathe" on a daily basis), happen to be discriminated against yourself, or are actually close to the case, it might. What does it matter?

It matters in the fact that everything now is - so called offending

when nothing is meant, i.e. this ad. People are so thin skinned now you cannot even look twice without someone offended. Names like Atlanta Braves, the Washington Redskins, Cleveland Indians, no matter those have been around for years, someone now offended so have to stop using those. All kids have to be awarded in school, cannot just have the best, someone is offended. I am really tired of people not taking responsibility for their actions, not the actions of others which might end in a unforeseen demise, but when is the last time any person said I did wrong and I am owning up to what I have done. I guess when it came out years ago about the comedian accused of rape then, now being accused by so many women of rape, drugging amongst other things totally out in the open, that the pudding company might have stopped showing his ads- did not happen. Guess the big pudding company does not count, only Wal-Mart?

I'm sorry, OP... - I stand corrected...

When I said, "You may be right in other instances but not this one" (re people being too 'thin-skinned') I was wrong. Having read your subsequent posts, I have come to conclude that I'm sure you are never right, in any instance.

I agree with you. Everyone is immediately "offended" - Offend me already

[ In Reply To ..]
Anything they don't agree with, they're "offended". There is no such thing as freedom of speech since someone is always "offended". Give me a break.

As far as crying over the criminals, as my grandmother used to say "they didn't get in trouble for saying their prayers". A cop points a gun at me and screams "down on the ground", you'd better believe I'll be down on the ground. Whether I'm right or wrong, that can be argued later. And I'm not going to fight them when they try to cuff me. Duh. Seems like common sense to me!

Nonsense. Freedom of speech is alive and well. You are still just as free to say whatever you want as you've always been.

Freedom of speech has never meant being free from the consequences of your speech, or from being personally responsible for the results of your speech.

Not offended - Patriot

I don't know that this was a case of people being offended so much as Walmart not wanting to appear socially insensitive. When you want people to spend money in your store, it doesn't pay to remind them about a painful experience.

I think Walmart showed remarkably good sense in this, even if their only motivation was fiscal.

Basically not about Wal-Mart, small fish - as far as the offending issue

I totally agree with the original poster. It is ridiculous to remove the ad.

It would be ridiculous to be asked to remove - the ad. WM decided to do this

xx

WM only did this after numerous complaints - people offended once again

Even though the ad out for months, people were offended once again because of the content. Once again ridiculous!

It's like people who get offended by "Happy Holidays." - rudy

There are several holidays this time of year. People who get in a huff because of "Happy Holidays" need to get over themselves. What a silly thing to be offended by!

What is really silly is we cannot say "Merry Christmas " - sm - XXX

without fear of offending someone, that is why many say the generic "Happy Holidays". I just love it (not) when someone kicks up a fuss that their religion is not recognized (be it Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc), but then only their religion can be the one displaying items....excluding the other religions. Why the fuss. It is going to end up eventually with no decorations at all in fear "someone" is offended. It truly is ridiculous how bad it has gotten.

Say whatever you want. - sm
