Red dog eyes

Posted: Jun 10, 2010

My stepfather's dog has had redness of her eyes for some months now.  She does not attempt to scratch at them and shows no sign of being in any kind of distress.  He takes such wonderful care of his pets, and I am there much of the time.

I have encouraged him on several occasions to just check it out to be safe.  He is not a worrier and says he thinks she is okay, and that it must be an allergy.  I have mentioned it nicely several times and don't know what else to do.

Are any of you famililar with this in dogs?  She really does seem fine.

Thanks so much for any help/advice.  We truly love her dearly.

My yorky-poo had very red, goopy eyes for a couple of months. The vet gave him Benadryl for allergies. It took a long time to clear up. Looked like doggy pink eye, BUT it did bother him. He'd rub his face on anything to get the boogers out and hated his three times a day eye washes. He took the pills well.

There are certain breeds of dogs that are prone to disease,(cherry eye) so I'd check on that.

Just because he's not showing any outward "signs" does not mean he's not suffering. Dogs and cats don't show "pain" or "discomforts" like people do. One huge mistake owners make is humanizing their pets feelings and needs. It's not until something is really wrong that you can actually tell, so don't wait any longer on this. A couple of months is long enough for the pup to have gone without being checked out by the vet.

All the best.

I will mention this again to my stepfather and hope this time he takes her to be checked out. She is such a sweetheart and acts completely normal, but they do look quite red sometimes. Since it is not my dog per se, I don't feel I can just take her on my own. He loves her so much, and I think when I mention this to him he will definitely take her. Thanks so much for the information.

causes for red eyes in dogs - allergy to common dog foot ingredients

The most popular supermarket and vet-promoted dog and cat foods actually are made with grains and preservatives/colors that cause allergic reactions in many pets, causing red goopy eyes, skin conditions, etc. Google something like "best dog foods" and you'll get info that can save your pet's life. There are sites that compare different brands. It really is criminal that these companies are allowed to advertise their pet foods as healthy, when they have toxic ingredients in them, IMHO.

Thank you - Christine

I appreciate your help. She doesn't seem to have any drainage from the eye, just mainly redness. I am going to check her again tomorrow and take it from there. I think the food allergy is interesting. My stepfather feeds her only dry dog food that is to be very good and recommended by our friend, a former dog breeder. Wish us luck.

All of the sudden, a couple of days ago, I noticed that my vision is extremely blurry after I stop working.  I can see the computer screen just fine, but when I look away I have to squint and can hardly see.  I'm also having some double vision. After a couple of hours, it gets better and I can see normally again.  This just started and it happens very soon after I start working.  I have increased the text size on my screen and increased the light in the room to try to l ...

Paul Ryan's Eyes -- Seriously....Mar 10, 2013
Am I the only one who thinks there is something seriously off about Paul Ryan's eyes?  Years ago, I read that when the whites of the eyes show below the irises, it's an indication of something--I can't remember quite what, but I think it was a negative thing.  That look has always given me a bit of a chill.  I believe some thyroid conditions cause a similar look, so maybe that's it.   ...

My Eyes Are Already Scanning The World,Mar 08, 2014
Just saw something on TV which helps people be speed readers, working started slowly and then got up to 600 wpm. I could keep up with it because that is my line of work, just scanning words as fast as my eyes will go. I don't know if others go through this but my eyes can pick up words all over the place including restaurants, cleaners, newspapers, anywhere I go that are incorrectly spelled. I now seem to speed read everything.  Anyone else? ...

Red Eyes, Weight Loss - HyperthyroidismMar 06, 2016
I'm catching up on medical problems after being without insurance for years.  For the past year I have had weight loss, red eyes and a fine tremor at times.  TSH was normal but T3 & T4 were very high.  I'd been hypothyroid most of my life (35 years), now diagnosed with hyperthyroidism & Grave's disease.  Had thyroid uptake 24 hour scan.  The endocrinologist said that in 18 years of practice, the highest thyroid uptake he had seen was 60% in a patie ...
