REMEMBER WHEN

Posted: Jul 27, 2010

Remember when:

There was no cable TV and stations actually signed off? Giving us a reason to TALK to each other!  Or there were only 3 stations and we prefered to go and talk to friends and neighbors.

When our kids could (and would) walk home from school safely and actually had fun doing it?  When they prefered walking to being picked up?

Remember when a G rated children's movie actually had no "adult dialogue" or sexual insinuation?

When grandma and grandpa were visitors, not a substitute parent?

ADD ON!  Lets let some of the younger folks know how it used to be!

When we could let our tweens watch a show on TV without worrying that their favorite teen idol was going to grab their crotch or other anatomical parts as an expression of their "art"? OR they didn't dress like junior hookers?

and only came home to get a popsicle or use the potty. You only really had to go home when the street lights came on. We never worried about weirdos or sexual predators, either.

We lived in a cul-de-sac growing up so we'd have neighborhood kick ball games until it was too dark to see.

MTs were paid their worth!

When men supported the household on 1 income!

When gay meant happy!

When the most voilent show on TV was MASH!

When a house couse 23,000 in the good part of town!

When your mama said "You wait till you daddy gets home, you actually waited..."

When your daddy said "This is gonna hurt me more that its gonna hurt you!"

When dinner was served at 5 pm sharp every night.

When there were no buckles in cars and no air bags, and the darn car was made of so much metal that if you hit a tree, you knocked the thing over!

I loved it then.

Remember when...
Going online referred to the party line telephone in your house.
A Big Mack was a truck
You could leave the doors to your house open because your neighbors were watching it for you, not casing it.
A man and a woman got married and STAYED that way?
A yo yo was a toy.
And doctors KEPT their appointments.

When stores were all closed on Sundays. So you really good rest or visit someone without all the traffic on the road. Growing up we had nice family dinners on Sundays. Now my own children work on Sundays. My bank is even open to 3 on Sundays.

Friday night "I'm washing my hair tonight" night.

Toys were toys and not mechanical. Slinky was the best toy ever. Or easy bake oven or Lite Brite (couldn't decide).

Grandma taught us how to whistle with a blade of grass and that was the best thing in life.

Grandma and grandpa moved their living room around and taught us how to polka to Lawrence Welk and that was the best thing ever.

Going shopping with grandma to the S&H Greenstamp store.

No electric rollers, but instead mom tied rags around my locks and in the morning I had beautiful curls.

My moms dishwasher was not Kenmore or Whirlpool, but was Sandra and Sally.

Saturday mornings were girl scouts and Sunday mornings was church.

No pants were worn to church or school or girl scouts.

If we cried in public mom would squeeze our arm really tight and tell us if we keep it up she'd give us something to cry about. Then she would spank us in public and nobody would think twice.

We had 12 channels, TV's had tubes, and we never complained that there was nothing on TV. No remote control either and we didn't complain about having to get up and change the channel and move the rabbit ears around.

We ate what was given to us and didn't complain for fear it would be sent to China and we'd go hungry.

Mom made all our clothes and we never asked for store bought.

We were always reminded how mom and dad had to walk to school and it was all uphill - both ways.

I think you and I must have had the same parents! - (haha) Rocky Raccoon - nm

Going to school in the middle of winter when snow was 2 feet deep and you had to walk. No busing. No schools closed but the rural kids had off for safety reasons. Also, being snowed in for a day or two if you lived in the country.

Cardboard sleds instead of the real thing.

Mom and pop grocery stores on every block which reminds me....you asked for $.25 of summer sausage and you got 1/4 pound. Steak $.50 pound.

Hucksters (produce sellers) deliveries, milk deliveries, bread deliveries. Rag men in a wagon with a horse yelling, "Rags..ragman...buying rags."

Paper drives by the Boy Scouts.

Mr. Softie (ice cream truck) every night playing his tune as he went around town.

Throwing corn on neighbors porches at Halloween. Soaping windows, too. Going to the 'rich' neighborhoods 'cause you always got money instead of candy. $.10 went far in those days.

Congregating [sp] outside the local soda shop waiting for a ride to the local dance. Vanilla and cherry coke from the soda fountain. Big, big sundaes (2 scoops of ice cream and toppings) for $.25, and root beer floats for $.30.

Walt Disney 45 rpm yellow records that played all the Disney hit songs from Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, etc. (Wish I still had those).

That's all for now....showing my age. LOL

I grew up in a small town and road my bike everywhere. We used to stop at the drive-up A&W for a rootbeer in a GLASS mug where we sat at the outdoor counter next to the carhops. Remember those? It tasted so much better then.

If you are 35, or older, you might think this is hilarious!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious
diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with
walking twenty-five miles to school every morning.... Uphill... Barefoot...
BOTH ways? yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in
hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard
I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look
around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean,
compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!
And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got
it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have the Internet. If we wanted to know
something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the
card catalog!!

There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a
pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the
mailbox, and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents!

Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter
of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ass!
Nowhere was safe!

There were no MP3's or Napsters or iTunes! If you wanted to steal music,
you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself!

Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio, and the DJ would
usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD
players! We had tape decks in our car... We'd play our favorite tape and
"eject" it when finished, and then the tape would come undone rendering it
useless. Cause, hey, that's how we rolled, Baby! Dig?

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and
somebody else called, they got a busy signal, that's it!

There weren't any freakin' cell phones either. If you left the house, you
just didn't make a damn call or receive one. You actually had to be out of
touch with your "friends". OH MY GOD !!! Think of the horror... not being
in touch with someone 24/7!!! And then there's TEXTING. Yeah, right.
Please! You kids have no idea how annoying you are.

And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no
idea who it was! It could be your school, your parents, your boss, your
bookie, your drug dealer, the collection agent... you just didn't know!!!
You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy PlayStation or Xbox video games with
high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like
'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your screen guy was a little square! You
actually had to use your imagination!!! And there were no multiple levels
or screens, it was just one screen... Forever! And you could never win.
The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you
died! Just like LIFE!

You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You
were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass
and walk over to the TV to change the channel!!! NO REMOTES!!! Oh, no,
what's the world coming to?!?!

There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday
Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying? We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons,
you spoiled little rat-finks!

And we didn't have microwaves. If we wanted to heat something up, we had to
use the stove! Imagine that!

And our parents told us to stay outside and play... all day long. Oh, no,
no electronics to soothe and comfort. And if you came back inside... you
were doing chores!

And car seats - oh, please! Mom threw you in the back seat and you hung on.
If you were lucky, you got the "safety arm" across the chest at the last
moment if she had to stop suddenly, and if your head hit the dashboard, well
that was your fault for calling "shot gun" in the first place!

See! That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too
easy. You're spoiled rotten! You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes
back in 1970 or any time before!

Regards,
The Over 30 Crowd

Riding bike everywhere and staying outside all day. Roller SKATING in the park with metal skates that needed a key.

The borough blocked off the best hill in town so we could sled ride - won't do it anymore.

Church every Sunday morning.

Actually walking 2 houses down to see if our friends were home.

Party lines. Ugh!

Dad's whistle meant 'Home. NOW.'

I don't think I knew anyone with divorced parents until I got to high school.

Stores closed on Sunday. And no mall nearby until I was a teenager.

If you got in trouble at a friend's house or at school, you were also going to get it when you got home - none of this 'Not MY kid' garbage. (What is it about that attitude that makes me grind my teeth? Yes, YOUR kid!)

Okay, feeling a little old here now. :O)

I am so glad this post was put up. I have an absolutely wonderful evening taking with my mom (77) and my daughter (27) and older brother (51) and his two daughters (7 and 8). We talked about many things that were posted here and mom added a few of her own. My daughter and my nieces were listening to her with amazement!

Here's mom's:

Not questioning or arguing with parents about chores that needed to be done because EVERYONE in the household had chores.

Growing a garden because if you didn't plant certain vegetables, you wouldn't have them through the winter.

Canning and preserving jams and jellys. (She says that nothing compares to homemade!)

Homemade bread.

People showed respect to adults.

Walking miles to get to the swimming hole.

Handwashing the laundry.

((I will never, ever forget last night, chatting with my family and being able to share with mom like this. Thanks to the OP. I hope that more people post their memories!))

Well in addition to what has been posted, I think about past Christmases and asking for things where I used my imagination -- a Skilcraft chemistry set one year (harmless chemicals but fun) and my younger sisters getting toys from Creative Playthings. I think the sad thing with the "younger generations" nowadays, is the fact that there is NO imagination left any more. Its now all video games and the internet.

A couple of posters mentioned too, about the fathers and "their whistles" yep -- so and so's dad would whistle close to dinner time and it was the signal that we all needed to be home and probably eating dinner.

I feel for the parents now and as a grandparent, I can relate that those days are LONG gone. Having been through a "horrid kidnapping/murder case in my local area when my kids were small, I learned to "put the reins on."

Nowadays too, boy scouts and girl scouts are almost non-existent and I went through scouting to my Cadet days. My son survived boy scouts to become an Eagle Scout and actually is now a Life Scout, which very few achieve in Boy Scouts.

My mind keeps coming back to that ad that uses "Imagination" from I believe Willy Wonka (not sure).

I could be an old fa** too in the fact that I love watching some of the reruns of the old shows on TVLand. Bewitched etc -- nowadays, we have nothing but "reality shows" and it gets to really be disgusting at times. Just my 2 cents

When girls could walk down the street holding hand because they were best friends, or boys with their arms around each other because they were pals, without people snickering or calling them names or making assumptions about their sexual preferences...

My 9 year old daughter and her bff were holding hands and another kid's mom was giggling about it telling some other moms that they were "junior lesbians"! They were all laughing!! She didn't realize I was in ear shot. I gave her a piece of my mind.

Ah, the good old days. So very long ago. Makes me so sad for society sometimes.

Still that way in other cultures. It's so cute to see my two South American girlfriends stroll arm in arm down the street, chatting away, when they think no one's looking! And East European men sometimes kiss each other on the LIPS (just a peck with closed lips to greet each other), but gay they ain't! Sheesh... We have gotten so perverted with our fake homophobia... I overheard a coworker tell a female friend, "Just because I signed "Love" on the birthday card, don't think I'm coming on to you!" I am so glad you gave that woman a piece of your mind!

Moms did not work and were there when you got home from school with baked apple pie made from scratch.

Walking 5 blocks to school because mom did not drive and it was safe to do so.

Going to grandmom's house every Sunday and seeing aunts, uncles, and cousins and eating cheesecake.

Being able to stay up later on Sunday night to watch Bonanza.

Before ATMs, when if you wanted to cash or deposit a check, you had to go stand in line at the bank?

The "gas crisis" of the 1970s, the long lines, limited hours of station operation, and the 20-gallon limit? My pickup had two 20-gallon tanks on it. Filling both took the better part of an entire day.

The "Mary Tyler Moore Show", "Bob Newhart", and then "The Carol Burnett Show" on TV every Saturday night?

Having to breathe cigarette smoke in all business offices, restaurants, airplanes, etc? And those of us that didn't smoke were the "oddballs"?

Pac-Man? (I had an addiction.....)

The days before cellphones, when you had to use a public pay-phone (IF you could find one that worked, that is), and feed a life-savings' worth of coins into it to make a call?

Pixie-Stix? (Another addiction.....)

When a candy bar or a granola bar was actually larger than just 3 bites, and could substitute for a meal in a pinch?

When the kids' matinee at the movies was 50 cents?

Having all summer off from school, with NO planned activities, and having to entertain yourselves?

When there were no organized sports (baseball, soccer, etc.) for girls?

When New York's Twin Towers were first built? Or San Francisco's pyramid-shaped Transamerica Building? And the controversy about how they looked? (And they later became icons of their respective cities).

The first time you saw color TV? (Only one family in my neighborhood had it, and every kid on our block went to their house to watch "Wonderful World of Disney" every Sunday.)

8-track cassettes?

When only the well-to-do had VCR machines, or video-games at home?

When the speed limit nationwide was 55?

4th-of-July fireworks then (just a few pops, about a minute apart each) vs now (mega-extravaganzas, computer-synchronized to music?)

Family vacations in the big ol' station wagon, with the back seats down so the kids had more room?

Cars without seat belts?

The first time you rode a 10-speed "racing" bike, and how odd it felt compared to your giant, 60-pound, balloon-tired Schwinn?

You were lucky with the color TV friend - Backwards Typist

[ In Reply To ..]
My friend's mom had a color TV but the only thing in color at that time was football, so that's what she watched.
