How to mask the taste of baked salmon, help!

Posted: Dec 14, 2009

I really need something, anything to put on salmon where I can eat it. I am not a fish person and only eating it because of the health benefits and tonight I once again choked down a large piece and it is not what I like. I had never cooked salmon until a few weeks ago. i put some olive oil on, salt and pepper and UGH! Can anyone give me any idea about how to mask this taste? TIA

lemon and pepper - LOVE SALMON

I would grill it on a cedar plank. Also, you could try Teryaki sauce or even honey mustard.

I eat salmon every week, even on salads wtih French dressing. YUMMY.

Whenever my husband and I are fortunate enough to be able to eat out, that is what I order!

Something else to try - sm

Try grilling it or broiling it with a butter, lemon and garlic baste, lots of lemon (fresh lemon juice always best).

OR, when you pick it up (if you're at the market) have them put a mesquite marinade on it.

If you're not that into the fresh fish and cooking it, try canned and make a pasta dill salad, just make it like you would a simple chicken salad. The taste is much different, very mild. Red is best in the can.

You can also reap the benefits by taking fish oil capsules... they give ME a bellyache tho...

first of all, I buy the fish at my supermarket from the assortment of fresh fish they have there with an actual person helping me. Do the people behind the counter put on the mesquite marinade there or is this something you buy. I have loaded my fish up with lemon but not fresh, will try that. I do take the fish oil capsules but trying to even get more than those as far as the benefits. Being as this is an every week ordeal, yes ordeal when you cannot stand the taste, I will be sure and make note of what people have offered and see just which one masks the taste the most. Thanks folks!

RANCH DRESSING! - full court dunk it

j/k haha .. but that is what my kid would suggest.

I broil it with lemon and butter and use a vinaigrette dressing as a dipping sauce. I switch up the vinaigrette flavor from bottle to bottle.

salmon - mt way too long

I have basted it with a tsp or maybe a little more of pure maple syrup. I love salmon but I like it that way too. Are you baking it in the oven? I kind of "sear" mine on the top of the stove to get a little bit of a crust and baste it with whatever and then add a little water to the pan, put a lid on it and finish steaming it done. It gets done plus you have that little bit of crust on it. Yumm!

I have been baking in the oven - Hating fish

The first few times I fixed it even worse and then hubs told me how to bake, not much better, still had the same taste. I bought one of those little yellow plastic lemon squeezers but hubs again said the real thing tastes better. I thought I could get better mileage with the bottle. Being as I am having each week, enough ideas here to try all. Thanks.

If you cannot stand the taste, don't eat it. Fish oil capsules...sm - fish

are actually healthier, considering the mercury content of so many fish.
Fish oil capsules do not contain mercury.

I agree, and a hint about the fish oil caps - huh?

[ In Reply To ..]
My doc suggested keeping the capsules in the freezer. This way they are in your intestine by the time they thaw, hence no belly ache and no burping up the fish oil.

I tried it and it works.

thanks for the hint, will do! .........nm - fish

Believe me, if not for really, really needing the health benefits - Hating fish

I would never let it pass my lips. I do take the fish oil, have for some time but I am trying to double my intake of what I feel I need. Sardines fall into the same healthy category as salmon but I really do not think I could stomach those. I only wish shrimp cocktail had the same benefits like the salmon, yummy to that.

hating fish: Take 2 capsules daily, much better than fish, believe us!...sm - fish

Fish is not healthy anymore!
Just think that fish swim and eat in polluted water that "stinks." I cannot figure out that people can eat sushi, raw fish. This is very dangerous, if sushi is not prepared in the right manner. It has to be frozen to minus 40 degrees to kill all the parasites and bacteria.
The smell of raw fish makes me gag.

If you want to double your fish intake, then take 2 capsules per day!

I personally love salmon....but - GGG

fish is still meat with all the cholesterol and fat as any other meat. I believe the "fish oil is good for you" hype is just that....hype to sell fish oil. Fish is just as unhealthy and dangerous as any other animal food...mercury, antibiotics, etc. If you really want to get the health benefits of "fish oil" just eat nuts, especially walnuts or have a Tbsp. of flax seed a day in a salad or other dish you enjoy. There is no need whatsoever to ingest any form of animal food. Your body will thank you. I know mine does.
I totally agree, plant sources are always better than animal products...nm - fish

try telling that to the masses. Until you actually make the move from animal to plant, you will never realize how much healthier you can become. ;-)
Read many, many items concerning this and believe me - Hating fish

if there was any way to consume plant instead of everything I read about the benefits of fish, I would. I do take fish oil, have for some time and I do take other supplements to fend off the devistating disease I face. I, of course, know about mercury found in fish. I never eat uncooked fish, never. Eating fish is not #1 on my list but alas using this along with other things to support the process going on with me.

why do have to eat fresh fish? As far as I know the benefits of eating fish are...sm - vrvr

Protein, calcium, omega fatty acids and vit D.
You can get those from other sources.

Salmon is the fattiest fish of all with the highest cholesterol, although it is the HDL.

Just trying to hopefully keep from going blind, that's all. Taking eye vitamins, fish oil capsules but know salmon along with sardines just added boost to what I am already doing.

I am well aware of lutein - Health Benefits
[ In Reply To ..]
Take FlorGLO and Icaps, both of which contain lutein, Astaxanthin, CoQ10, fish oil, LiverCare and Bilberry, all of these are helpful for the eyes. Having done research on what is good for the disease, salmon is still considered a #1 try, that being my reason for asking for ways to conceal the fishy taste.

I had the same problem wherein I could not stand the taste of the stuff. However, a man who did professional catering fixed some salmon for me that was incredible and told me how to do it.

Cut up salmon into serving size pieces. No need to skin the filet at all. Soak the salmon overnight in canned concentrated pineapple juice making sure to have all the pieces submerged. When you get ready to bake it, remove the salmon from the pineapple marinade (discard...gross). You can either rinse the salmon off or not; your choice. Top with drained, crushed pineapple. Sprinkle with seasoning salt and a sprinkling of cinnamon with little tads of butter here and there. Bake until flesh is cooked through. Be sure to have enough cooked for seconds for everyone.

Incredibly delicious! Enjoy. Mmmmm...

(My mouth is watering right now, and I will probably have to go shopping shortly for the ingredients!)

I love smoked salmon but not really fresh all that much sm - ChiaPet

When I do eat fresh, I soak a fillet in a mixture of low sodium soy sauce, rice vingegar, grated ginger and chopped garlic; 15 minutes or so in the mix, then put on a hot pan with a little sesame oil. Sear on both sides for maybe 3-5 minutes depending on thickness of the fish. Serve with some brown rice and a salad, with a squeeze of fresh lime or lemon on top. If you have a George Foreman type grill, that's better than baking it I think.

As for fish oil, I take 2 capsules before bed. That way I don't burp it.

My husband found a recipe that is just DIVINE. It uses butter, brown sugar, cayenne pepper and a couple of other things. When he gets home, I'm going to ask him the exact recipe and cooking instructions. BEST. SALMON. EVER. Sweet and spicy too, and NO fishy taste at all.

I love the recipes i get off of here.  Growing up, I had a friend that I would go to her house and her mom would make salmon croquets, my mom never made them.  I tried to make some once and they didn't turn out so good.  I looked up recipes, but there are so many variations, so does anyone have a good recipe.  Also, the can of salmon that I bought had all of these bones in them and it took forever to clean them out.  Is there a type you can buy with no bones and if ...

The Perfect Baked PotatoDec 31, 2011
I was watching a cooking program on publlic TV and found out how to make the Perfect baked potato.  I tried it, and it IS perfect.  All you do is preheat the oven for as high as it goes - I use 540.  Wash the potato and cook it for 1 hour.  Do not prick, oil, or wrap in foil!  The skin is crunchy, and the middle soft and creamy.  Great if you want to scoop out the middle for twice-baked recipes, but I like it with browned melted butter, salt, and pepper.  ...

How Would You Make A Bean Soup To Taste BetterJul 25, 2010
I'd like a vegetarian type bean soup.  I had a recipe that I followed but it tasted just blah to blech.  One of those I don't know whether I like it but its bordering on a "no" (if that makes sense).  I want to use swiss chard and garlic in it.  What I had originally done was cut some swiss chard from my garden, sauteed it in garlic and a little olive oil.  Then I added 2 cans of vegetarian vegteble broth, 3 cups of water, and 2 cups of canelli bean, salt and p ...
