Cell Phones vs. Landlines

Posted: Dec 6, 2011

I am really starting to think about switching to cell phones only. I would like to save on my bills, I hear a lot about people doing this - after searching, I don't think I understand where you "save" that much. Unless I am missing something.

Do you mind sharing with me, what plan you use (provider), how many minutes (shared?), do you feel your minutes are sufficient? How much do you pay a month? Does your pricing include "data plan" (email, internet)?

Right now we are paying approx. $200 for home phone, internet and cell phones (2 phones - 500 shared minutes), 100 long distance minutes. This is through our local phone company.

What is the advantage to having cell phone use only, and not a landline?

Good internet is a given for this job. I currently have Vonage for the "landline" at the lowest rate. I can call all over the US for something like 500 minutes a month for about $17.00. It runs through the computer and sometimes I have a bit of an echo with certain connections.

I have a "trac" phone cell phone (average about $8.00 per month)that I carry for "emergencies" (i.e. finding my husband at the mall and other large venues). I am at home most of the day and can use my landline most of the time.

Hubby has a work-provided cell that costs us nothing. So we get by at about $60 per month for internet, landline, and cell.

I wish I could get a "smart" phone under the trac phone deal-- just for a month or so, so I could play with it until I get tired of it. If anyone knows of such a deal, let me know!

i have just a cell phone because that way no matter where i am i get my calls and if my truck breaks down i can get help...but, i had a friend in iceland that i liked to call (she has moved here), but t-mobile gives me a pay-as-you-go plan for 30 a month with 1500 minutes of texting, long distance, and local calls all included...but the leftover minutes do not carry over to the next month...

For me, there are two advantages of a landline... - Kiki

Though I do have a cell phone, I keep a landline because I thought if you needed to call 911, only calling from a landline would automatically tell the operator your address.

I think they are working on it for cell phones, though, just not yet.

Another reason I like to have a landline is because I can't LOSE that. I have lost my cell phone on more than one occasion. I've actually used my landline to call it and help me find it!

#1 We thought about ditching it a few times but we live in a very rural area and there we have many dead spots on our property for cell service. I can be sitting at my computer working and my husband will try and call my cell phone and it will not ring. Very frustrating. My neighbors up the street have gotten rid of their landlines without issue, but I'm afraid to for emergencies.

#2 We thought about adding on home service with our cell provider but you cannot fax with them. We don't fax a LOT but my husband is self employed and needs things faxed from time to time.

#3 We have a super cool phone number that is easy to remember. ;-)

It depends on how often you use your phone - Happy MT Robin

I've had only a cell phone for years and I finally went with that because I was never home to answer the landline anyway - either that I was sleeping and had it turned off because I worked graveyards.

As for cell phones, that is going to vary widely based on how much you actually talk on the phone and whether you want a smart phone with data plan or just plan to use wi-fi access wherever you can access it. I had an iPhone with the basic plan with AT&T back when they gave you unlimited data and I paid about $75 a month. I NEVER used all of my minutes, though, because I just don't talk on the phone that much.

You have to consider how much you use your phone and whether they roll over any unused minutes as to whether a cell phone plan is economical for your situation or not.

Right now I have a Tracfone that I am quite happy with. It doesn't have the greatest connection, but I rarely talk on the phone and so it is much cheaper than any other option.

Looking At Straight Talk Cell Phones And Can't Decide Which One Would Be Best.Nov 13, 2014
My first instinct is to go for the cheapest and on the straight talk website they have a free Samsung T528G when you purchase a plan.  I have a cheapy prepaid phone now that I hate!  It is supposedly touchscreen, but I cannot get it calibrated right and half the time I have no service which I don't know is the phone or the cell service. I also see Samsung Centura or Discover for $50 to $70.  So what would you guys suggest I get? ...

Work PhonesAug 08, 2013
My hubby has a job that recently has made MANY cut backs, INCLUDING cutting all employees salary considerably.  We actually cannot really afford for my husband to keep this job now and he is interviewing currently.  Anyway, one of the things the company cut was a work cell phone that they provided.  My husband is on different job sites throughout the day and the boss used this cell phone to CONSTANTLY (up to 5 times per hour) call my husband to find out where he is located, how mu ...

My Mom And Her Cell PhoneJan 07, 2015
After years of hounding my mom and dad about not having a cell phone especially when driving long distances in our cold, wintry state, my mom actually went out all on her own  and bought an inexpensive prepaid cell phone. She is very proud of the fact that she has a cell phone and knows how to add minutes, etc. The problem is that she will NOT turn it on because it "runs down the battery." My brothers and I have explained about the cell phone charger until we are practically blue in the fac ...

Cell Phone TimeNov 20, 2013
Did anyone's cell phone time get messed up this morning?  My alarm is set for 6:50, so I got up, but the entire world was at 7:50.  My bestee then called me and asked if this was going on with me.  I have ATT and she has Sprint, as well as another friend with a tracfone.  Needless to say, I was an hour late.  Just wondering if this is everywhere or just here in West Michigan.  How bizarre. ...

Minnesotans on terror conspiracy charges this week, U.S. District Judge Michael Davis closed a chapter in the federal government’s long, extraordinary investigation of ISIL recruitment in Minnesota. In nine hearings over three days before a courtroom packed with the families of the young men who sought to give their lives to ISIL, Davis repeatedly underlined a clear message: There is a terrorist cell in Minneapolis and it is still alive today. “Everyone talks about Brussels or Paris ...
