Amanda Knox found guilty - 26 years in prison in Italy

Posted: Dec 4, 2009

This is just a very sad story.  I was listening to CNN and it doesn't sound like she received a fair trial.  Just seems very sad all around.

The story came up on the first page of CNN

Followed this closely - LK

She is from my area (Seattle) and was a student at my alma mater, the University of Washington. We got a lot of news of this trial in the Seattle area because she's local.

Don't know what to think - don't know what involvement she actually had, although I do think she was present when the crime happened. My daughter tells me the Italian justice system is quite corrupt. Very sad for someone so young. Even sadder for the victim, Meredith Kercher.

They said her DNA was on the knife. Sure looks - like she is guilty.nm

That's what I read too - (sm)

Her DNA on the handle, the victims DNA on the blade. Sounds like they got the right girl. I haven't followed this all that closely, but read that the third guy who was charged (not the Italian ex-boyfriend, the other guy) had already been convicted and sentenced to 30 years. Anybody know why his sentence was longer? Just curious as I read that today but it only mentioned that he had been convicted, length of sentence, and that he was appealing conviction.

They apparently retrieved a knife from Amanda's boyfriend's kitchen - there was a trace of blood on the blade - not really able to be traced to the victim and not even certain that it was human blood, and there was a trace of Amanda's DNA on the handle. It also doesn't seem to definitively even BE the knife that was used in the killing - it is just a knife, not necessarily THE knife.

I think she was crucified in the Italian media rather than by the facts of the case.
I agree with you - mt

I didn't follow the case closely. In fact it wasn't until I was watching CNN that I asked DH what it was about and he said the crime occurred about 2 years ago and then I remembered it. I was listening to a lady interviewed who has followed the case and lived in Italy for 4 years. She said the prosecutor had something against Amanda because of her personal life. The prosecutor claimed that Amanda had gone into the place and removed all her finger prints but left those of the victim and killer, and just really painted her negatively. Just a lot of things don't add up, and I've heard a few people say the Italian justice system is corrupt and basically your guilty until proven innocent. I feel bad for what this girl and her family are going through because if she did not do it she doesn't deserve to spend time in jail, and I feel equally as sad for the victim and her family. It's just very very sad.

She was involved with drugs, alcohol and this Italian - foxy knoxy

boyfriend. Her story changed 3 times and has discrepancy toward the story of her boyfriend.
Both gave the impression that they didn't really be aware what had happened.
They were most probaby stoned and did not know what they were doing, and not even who was present.
I think all 3 are guilty.
But, I bet, that the American court system will continue to appeal until she is set free.

I expect from an "American" POV, she never would have been convicted. - sigh

[ In Reply To ..]
The Italian judicial system would allow her to be convicted with a 5-4 vote, whereas here in the USA we have more or less an all or none POV.
Do you think she is innocent? She diidn't shed a single tear?!..nm - ?

I have no idea if she's innocent or not. - sigh

I didn't see the trial. However, if what was reported is correct (and that's always questionable), I don't think she would have been convicted by a US jury. JMO.
The Italian court was amazed by her behavior during the trial..sm - my op

very cold, distant and almost amused as if she were acting in a play.
They chose to show that side of her - Old part-timer

They were constantly taking pictures of her and of course published those which showed her smiling or looking "cold and distant." I'm curious though - would somebody who knew they were guilty smile and act cold and distant during the trial? If anything, to me it points more towards her KNOWING she was innocent and not believing she would be falsely convicted.

As far as not shedding a tear, had she cried, they would have jumped all over that as putting on a show. She was pretty much d*mned if she did and d*mned if she didn't.

It has been over two years ago...sm - KyMT

Over time a person's emotions do become easier to control. I'm not sure I phrased that just right. Does that make sense??

What can the US goverment do? Does anyone remember...sm - KyMT

the 18-year-old teen, Michael Fay from Ohio who got busted in Singapore for vandalism back in 1994? Clinton tried to have clemency granted, but did not succeed. The initial punishment was a $1400 fine and a flogging which consisted of 6 lashes with a rattan cane, which Clinton did have reduced to 4. Does the US government really hav that much international power to get involved in the "judicial system" of other countries?

Or maybe even one of the lesser included, in my very unlegal knowledge, she should file an appeal for ineffective counsel.  Not only did he introduce a theory at opening arguments he KNEW he could not prove with evidence by testimony, he opened WAY too many doors for the prosecution.  All he had to do was to show that prosecution had no HARD evidence on many levels, which he could have done, had he not made rookie mistakes, or pushing the envelope.  He forced the burden of ...

For Cat Lovers, Feeling GuiltyJun 04, 2013
I just found out my 2nd cat in 10 years likely has a cryptococcal fungal infection.  The 1st one I did the whole treatment, surgery, biopsy, blood titers, fluconazole (150 bucks a month for a year), cost me over $2000.  She got better, but about 6 months later, it came back and I could not afford to treat her anymore.  I put all that cost on my credit cards. Well fast forward, I now have another cat with the same thing.  Saw the vet (different one) and he wants to do a biops ...
