Any hints on how to get blood sugar levels down

Posted: Feb 14, 2015

I wrote below about glipizide.  I am waiting for that to come in the mail.  They had me stop taking metformin due to swollen ankles.  My ankles and feet still swell up, but I cannot get my blood sugars under control.  I'm now into eating salads and drinking water. Tonight it will be grilled chicken and a salad.  For lunches I bought some veggies to steam.  Very little to no sugar.  No breads, pasta, rice.  I thought I did very well this morning but my sugars went from 281 to 392.  Should I just be patient and wait for medication and just watch what I eat?

I heard cinammon is good in lowering glucose, so far has not worked.  My ankles and feet are swelling and they ache.  I have a walker machine I will be setting up, so hoping that will help.

Just frustrating and wonder if other people have any suggesting or things they eat that lower levels.

Did he tell you to stop the Metformin before the Glipizide came?

This sure can't be from you eating so much. Sounds like you are really trying to cut down to get it down quickly.

Found this but it is from 2011.

Exercise is great at regulating blood sugar - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
My daughter is a type 1 diabetic, and when she is more active, she uses less insulin. Exercise cannot replace dietary management but the 2 work together very well. The more you exercise (even just walking) the better it is.

You may need to look for hidden sugar as well. Sugar free syrup still has carbs, just not nearly as many. Salad dressings can too. Sometimes carbs are added to meats like sausages, sauces often have quite a bit of carbs in them as well. Make sure to drink plenty of water as well. It will not help with the sugars per se but it may help with the swelling and with flushing your system.

Depending on how high your blood sugar was before you stopped the Metformin, being on no medication until you get the glipizide, your sugars will probably be on the high side until you start the Glipizide, THEN with the diet and meds and exercise, they will slowly come down. If your feet and ankles are that painful, maybe you should ask your doctor for something to help that. How long have you been diabetic? I have the neuropathy in my feet. It started almost as soon as my diagnosis.

Good luck with everything!

Thanks everyone, and thanks anonie for the website - Blimy - I'm now at 454!!!!

How in the heck is this possible? I don't feel any different. Maybe cos I ate a couple hours ago. I had a veggie sandwich (on wheat) and water.

Today got my exercise cleaning out the front area to put my exercise machine. I hope my glipize comes in and soon. Tonight it's steamed veggies for me and that's it. Hopefully by tomorrow it will go down and hopefully I will have the glipizide in.

Thank you so much for the website. I've got a lot to learn and stressed to the max about financial situation here, so maybe the stress is adding. Just seems like everything is adding to it all.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions. Going to follow them all.

Diabetic teaching - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
When I was diagnosed as borderline diabetic, my doctor set me up with diabetic teaching. It was expensive due to crappy insurance, but well worth the money because I learned so much I never knew, i.e., even how hand lotions and cough medicines can affect one's sugar levels, how to manage when you're sick with a cold or the flu, specific care of your feet, etc. There is a lot of information out there. I had 3 classes at 2 hours each for a total of 6 hours of teaching. Plus, they gave me a binder with all kinds of information for reference. In addition to what you're learning and doing, it wouldn't hurt to take classes and learn from a registered dietitian. Mine just happened to also be a diabetic, so I feel my diabetic education was superb. Also, keep in mind that some people, no matter what they eat, will absolutely need to be on medication, maybe temporarily, maybe permanently. Be wise as you are until you receive the glipizide, but be kind to yourself also and don't beat yourself up. If you are doing everything right and your blood sugar is still out of control, it is NOT your fault. Good luck to you!

That's a given for diabetes. Your best food choices would be taken from the glycemic index. Some foods metabolize better.

Need Some Hints About Teenage Music WantsNov 29, 2009
I have gotten together some items for families that may be lacking this year. Already got one family with 4 children their Christmas and have most for a family of 6 (egads) children what might brighten their Christmas morning. Another lady said her sons, 14, 15 and 19 (yes, I know they are older) might like clothing, cologne or something in the music department. I am trying to go as cheap as I can with used toys for the smaller ones but can anyone point me in the right direction of buying ...

Sugar Question...Oct 09, 2013
I seem to have a recurring problem with my bags of sugar. It is the plain white granulated kind. I usually buy only one bag at a time and usually pour the sugar into a canister on my countertop. That sugar is always fine. However, when I put the leftover sugar away in its original bag, I have 2 things happen. If I store it in the basement, an invisible mouse opens the bag and eats the sugar OR if I put it in the kitchen cupboard it gets hard as a rock. Either way, I have to throw out any remain ...

So, two years ago we bought a 50-year-old mobile home on a canal in Florida from a snowbird couple who hadn't spring cleaned the drawers and cupboards in lots of years (can't do that from a car headed north after all). So I took a vanload to Goodwill and kept what I thought we could use in a vacation place. Today I did stage 2 and got rid of 90% of that. Which made me think of this book ...

Blood Pressure And CTAFeb 10, 2014
I have diabetes and mild hypertension and take a low-dose medication that seems to control the BP very well (1-teens/60s) which I check in my left arm daily. At my routine doctor's appointment today, where my BP is usually higher than when at home, it was 148/68 (right), 120/65 (left). She always checks both arms. The doctor was concerned about the difference between arms, and has scheduled me for a CT angiogram on Wednesday. I was concerned, so when I got home, I checked using my machin ...

As Boehner and the House led the country to the verge of economic collapse last week, I was listening very carefully.
