Steiff Stuffed Animals

Posted: May 27, 2017

Hello, All- I've inherited about 30-40 Steiff stuffed animals. I do know they can be valuable, but am having trouble figuring out how to sell them to someone reputable. I am not interested in doing online auctions, but I am interested in at least finding out what they are worth. No matter what kind of Internet search I do, I end up going around in circles, some leading me to Ebay, others leading me to appraisal ads, yet others to Pintrest, telling me a lot of nothing. I know that EBay has become the modern "barometer" for what things are supposedly worth, but I'm more interested in personally finding someone who really wants them or some of them, dealer or not, and I'm not sure how to go about that. It would be nice if I could just do this locally. I live in a suburban type area---certainly not rural and certainly not urban/metropolitan. I also don't want to get "rooked." Been there done that with some other items. I thought I knew where to begin, but I'm going around in circles. Most of the items have the little button in the ear with a serial-type number, and that's been a bit helpful, but again, takes me around in circles. I am aware that condition and things like that can all play into what I could get for them. I also know that just because there is no button in the ear, it doesn't mean they aren't Steiff or aren't worth anything. Thanks for anything you can help me with, in particular, if you know a lot about Steiff and/or researching true value of the items. ;

I used to be an antique dealer but didnt deal in bears however - PAMT

I do know that the age, condition etc of the bears is important. If I wanted to know the price of something I was not sure about I got another person that dealt in that item to give me an idea of the worth. Antiques are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them and from what I have found they are not as desirable today as they used to be as the young people have gone modern. You should have an auction house around where you live that will certainly tell you what they usually bring and they are usually very honest people moreso than individuals because they want the most they can get as well and they aren't buying from you to resell. They are an auction house. Go with one that sells good antiques not collectibles.

From OP - Thanks for the info

Thanks, I do know we have some antique dealers not far from here, but hadn't thought about an auction house. I'll look into that!

and if they dont get that you can withdraw from selling the item. They are very familiar with these things so that may be the way to go and they are up to date on what is selling well and what is not.

Unfortunately, they are only worth what - the traffic will bear

"bear" so to speak, and Ebay is the best way to figure out what they are worth in the public marketplace. I have sold most of mine on EBay and gotten fair prices. It did require a lot of research. private email me and I'll be looking for a couple of sites I found most helpful at setting a starting price, if you are interested. I would hate to see you knowingly sell them to a dealer who will just double the price without doing any of the work.

My son was saving "Starting Lineup" figures - that were once worth a lot but now barely nothing

A friend was buying up Beanie Babies to save for a higher price. Now I see them at garage sales for under a dollar.

My son said what he learned about saving items hoping their value would increase is that there is a limited window of opportunity to sell collectables and he missed it to the point these collectables are nearly worthless and no one knows what they are. The public is fickle and has short-term memory.

I do know that saving things in hope that the value will go up, doesn't work. Things come in and out of popularity, sometimes because of a recession, sometimes just because. Dolls were big a while back, and I'm pretty sure they're "out" now. Not sure where my Steiff stand, but I am researching it.

Thanks All! - From OP

Thanks for all the help! I am going to see if there is a local auction house in my area, as well as exploring other suggestions. Thanks also to those who privately e-mailed me.

Dog Lovers - Toxic Stuffed ToysMar 27, 2010
This was posted on one of my dog lists by a vet.  An owner brought in his dog who was very sick.  The dog had eaten the stuffing from a child's stuffed toy.  The vet did surgery to remove the obstruction, and found the entire intestines were black and all the tissue dead.  The dog died.  The vet tracked down the toy manufacturer to find out what was in the stuffing, and was told they put in a chemical gel pack that acts as a fire retardant. Since kids don't ea ...

Need Help With A Recipe - Spinach Stuffed ChickenMay 27, 2012
Tonight I am going to try making spinach stuffed chicken breast and would like to know if this sounds right or what you would do to add or change it.  Kind of making it up as I go and here and there from recipes.  Thinking about mixing spinach, ricotta cheese, garlic, basil, salt and pepper (don't know if other seasoning would be good).  Then pound the chicken breast flat and fill and roll.  I want to bake them and thought maybe a cream of mushroom type sauce over them ...

Love Animals But Do Not Know What To DoMar 03, 2014
My neighbor recently has added to her pets, getting a new cat. I know her other cat, I have seen it sometimes on my patio but pretty much keeps to itself. The new cat runs to my door every time my husband comes home, really wants to come in, very sweet and affectionate. The other night I started out after 8 going to the store and the cat was extermely close to my garage, instead of being scared the cat was trying to go into the garage. When I first saw the cat I posted as to who it bel ...

Re: Love Animals More Than PeopleNov 12, 2012
I feel kind of the same way. I fall to pieces when I see animals hurting, but it does not affect me as much when I see people hurting. If I see a story about animal abuse, I cannot bear to look at it or read about it, but I have a safe curiosity if it is about a person being abused. I'm not alone in feeling this way, and I think more people feel this way than let on. Those who say they care about people more than animals, or who are defiant in humans inherent value compared to anim ...

Travel Bans Used With Good Success To Control Outbreaks Of Diseases In AnimalsOct 17, 2014
It's called a "stand-still" order, and it's one of the FIRST steps taken by agricultural authorities with the very first or even suspected discovery of a case of certain animal diseases.  No animals are allowed to be transported in or out of the "stand-still" order area.  Now, I'm quite sure that human epidemiologists are perfectly aware both of this practice and of its effectiveness.  So there's something else going on here when it comes to implementing trave ...

South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who is running for the Republican nomination for governor, held a town hall meeting yesterday where he argued government should be tougher on families whose children receive free and reduced-price lunches.
