flag-pin wearin, pistol packin

Posted: May 12, 2011

I just don't get it.  The folks who cherish their fabric flags and lapel pins, bedazzled redwhiteandblue T-shirts and generic soldiers.  Yet they disdain the elderly, foreigners, the poor and mothers of lost soldiers (Cindy S).  America is people, not symbols.

I'm also tired of our pep rally style of society - Connecting The Dots

I'm always asking myself if I am holding too tight to a particular party or philosophy. I don't want to get to the point where I will only pray for the President of the United States if he is from my particular party. I never want to get to the place where I am insensitive to those who are facing challenges and decisions that I've never had to deal with.

Never considered patriotism a "pep rally." - nm

social security trust fund...stole from US, money WE paid in toward our retirement, to fund OTHER programs. Dems have no moral high ground on disdain to the elderly. Disdain to foreigners? By asking them to obey the law, pay taxes like the rest of us? Disdain the poor? Like the Democrats who only became interested in African Americans AFTER they got the vote (which they would not have done if Democrats had maintaibed majorities in the 60's)...Democrats have no moral high ground on ANY of these issues, and they act more like their "symbol" than compassionate people.

This tired old class warfare rhetoric needs to be shelved permanently.

Democrats are so compassionate that - sm

they wanted slavery to continue.....or have we all forgotten our Civil War history?

I understand the desire to help those in need. That isn't a 1 party thing. However, the parties go about it differently.

There once was a time when Americans were too proud to receive a handout. They would work many odd jobs trying to support their families. Now we have Americans who refuse to work a minimum wage job because they can sit at home and receive a check from the government instead. That is what our country has become and it is sad.

Agreed....we need to return to individual - responsibility.

threatening to take their marbles and go overseas unless GOP sugar daddies do not extend endless subsidies to the richest of the rich, despite all the party whining about the deficit and debt. American as apple pie to some, I suppose, but extortion, blackmail and highway robbery to others.

Fast forwards 100 years and what do we see? - GOP recent history

[ In Reply To ..]
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voters Rights Act of 1965 (dealing with nearly 100 years of black voter suppression), were passed by a Democratic president, house and senate. If historical perspective is cited, why not review it in its entirety? What has the GOP done lately in this regard? Why were those acts necessary? Maybe you could reconcile your claim with such practices as the GOP Southern Strategy, where the they deliberately exploited Southern racism, first adopted under Nixon, then redeployed by Reagan, HW and W. Keep in mind that the GOP has formally apologized for engaging this practice, for all the good it did them.

Your handout passage is a bit flawed. Once upon a time there were enough odd jobs to go around. Then came trickle down, NAFTA, outsourcing, salary and minimum wage stagnation (to the point that unemployment benefits actually DO exceed amounts paid by minimum wage), neither of which represent a living wage, and the advent of the Wall Street/corporate empire. What I find sad is that some Americans feel the need to turn the inevitable fallout from such events into a morality issue.
Let's look at the history leading UP to the - civil rights act....all the way

to the civil war. Want to talk about who started the KKK and who instituted poll taxes and literacy requirements in order to stop the emancipated slaves from being able to vote? Democrats and Democrats, and managed through filibuster to keep it from happening until 1964. Yes, a Dem president and a Dem congress, but not enough of a majority to overcome the racists in their party's filibuster without the Republicans. Since the civil war through 1964, Republicans had a MUCH better record on civil rights.

Remember Johnson's quote about losing the support of the south forever? And how did he replace that voting bloc? With the newly added African American vote...aka war on poverty, the advent of entitlements that are a large part of why our economy is in the mess it is in today.

The federal government was never meant to provide LITERAL welfare.

Individual responsibility needs to return....and Democrats need to take responsibility for what THEY have done also. I have not heard any apologies for keeping the vote from African Americans for a hundred years AFTER emancipation....

Yes, there was a Democratic president, but he did not want to lose the southern Democrat vote. Without Republicans again joining the Democrats willing to vote for it to avoid filibuster,
So which history do you suppose black voters refer to - 21st century voting booths?

The one they and their parents have lived in realtime or the one the GOP feels compelled to rewrite at the drop of a hat? Just sayin.

Democrats care about children who are being abused or go to school hungry - Empathy Is Good

[ In Reply To ..]
Many Republicans are not capable of being empathetic. All poor people are bad, they seem to believe. If you are rich, you must be wise and good. Democrats tend to care about those who are unable to care for themselves. I like that about Democrats.
How delusional some of you are. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The only reason democrats "care" about the poor is because the more they promise them....the more votes they get in an election.
That simply isn't true. - But it proves the point being made
[ In Reply To ..]
It very clearly shows the attitude toward poor people that I find insulting even though I'm not poor.
I don't get off where you say we don't care - about poor people.
[ In Reply To ..]
We care and we have no problem helping people get up and stand on their own 2 feet. That is the difference between the parties. Democrats have no problem keeping the poor dependent on government. Republicans have no problem helping the poor but want to get them to where they are self supportive and self reliant without being dependent on the government for survival. Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.

The democrats just wanna keep handing out fish while the republicans want to teach them HOW to fish. See the difference?
I'd like something between the two you described - sm

I don't think you can put Republicans and Democrats in boxes that easily. I think there are plenty of plans worthy of investment, like Head Start and other programs to help break the poverty cycle.
