I hope the tensions don't continue to escalate. What was the officer supposed to do? What is any officer to do when he or she feels threatened?
Yes, I realize there are some rogue cops. There are always bad apples, but the entire law enforcement community and the entire general public should not be paying the price for those few bad apples.
I want my community back. I want my shopping mall back. I want my streets and bridges back. If you must protest, do it lawfully and do not negatively impact the innocent.

I think the newer generations do not know how much Martin Luther King and others worked so hard to have their CR. Now it seems it is all thuggery and making things miserable for everyone even if everyone is not to blame.
I would hope that police could handle things a lot more restrained, but then the officer also has to protect himself. I still think there have to be other ways of subduing people instead of shooting them.
However, with that said, I am sorely afraid this will just keep escalating when you have people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton stoking the racial tensions not to mention the P and AG. Honestly, no one seems to understand the power of words today.
I certainly hope we do not end up back in the 60s again. We have no MLK to help. There are black people who are well educated who see exactly what is going on in this country.
Do you suppose Mexican or other illegals will start doing this type of thing. We won't be safe at all if they do.
Those officers have to protect us not only from our own citizenry but potential terrorists home grown here as well as who come across borders or ports illegally.
God help us all. I have watched this country become so entirely different than I grew up in. My ancestors fought in the RW, CW and other wars but they would be horrified to know about what is going on that they fought so hard for.
I only hope pastors and other people who have common sense will wake up these trouble makers and thugs, actually the demonstrators who don't even live in an area who protest and cause problems, burning and looting.
Let's hope that children are taught to respect policemen and not resist arrest. Otherwise, they will be killed if they look like they have any weapon, be it or not.

In my tiny county, the KKK has distributed leaflets to businesses and it worries me. We have no black issues around here because we don't have that many and those who are here are treated respectfully.

and I don't mean that sarcastically. A gun does more damage and is quicker than a taser. Before an officer would be able to use the taser, he'd be dead. When a gun is pointed at you, would you use "other methods" to subdue someone? Impossible. I wouldn't.
If you're talking about Berkeley, protesters stormed the police tossing firecrackers and bricks at them. I'm wondering how the protesters got there so fast....seems kind of strange that they converged on the scene so fast.
Good thing the mayor (who happens to be black) came out immediately in a press conference AND the Chief. Too bad they didn't catch the second guy. By the time they do, he'll have his lies all ready to go. The video clearly shows the dead one pointing a gun at the police. Gov. Nixon also made a statement but it was another half-hearted attenpt.
The mother was interviewed, too, complaining they wouldn't let her see her son. Why does she want to see him? He's gone. She'd be contaminating the crime scene. Maybe that's what she wants. Maybe Sharpton already contacted her. Who knows?
She said he was on his way to meet his girlfriend and he wasn't carrying a gun. (Well, he sure was pointing something at the cop.) "He only just left the house to go see her," she said.
She also said he turned 18 in September and had attended nearby Jennings High School, and that she was trying to get him enrolled in the Jobs Corps employment program. That means he quit school.
Problem is today's world is certain people and groups believe they don't do anything wrong, no matter how many times they are arrested for crimes. It's all because of Sharpton and the rest making other feel inferior. MLK would be kicking Sharpton to the curb for what he's doing. I think it's time to arrest him for inciting a riot, taking money under false pretenses, and felony tax evasion. They should also arrest him for contempt of court and thrown in jail for refusing to pay the lawsuit against him that the defendant won.
Don't worry about issues with the KKK in your county. My county is like yours. The KKK held an "informational soap box" protest in my county a couple years ago and the "mob" that showed up against them soon sent them packing. LOL

The advent of social media and 24 hours news cycles has also added a bit of friction to the sweeping under the rug authoritarian approach. There is constant scrutiny, which, apparently is very much needed. There are so many cases of police shooting black men, multiple shots, a variety of unnecessarily aggressive responses on the mentally ill and children and otherwise diffusible situations that it makes me sick. To find these cases you just have to be open to their existence. They are there.
No, we did not leave it all behind. Yes, the reaction to President Obama may have rekindled the racist reactions of past and made things come to the surface and seem worse, but that is just indicative of the overall problem to begin with.
