What do you think about presidential age?

Posted: Aug 12, 2012

I don't intend this to be either for or against Republicans or Democrats.  I just started thinking about this question when I found out that Paul Ryan is 41 (42?) years old.

Now, I'm not "ancient" at 56 years old; but when I think about the fact that our country requires that a president only be, what?, 35 years of age, I start to wonder if that's old enough!  (LOL)

I can't help but wonder how I would feel if, some day, a presidential ticket included a pres. nominee of, let's say, 38 years old, and the VP candidate of, let's say 35 years of age...or something like that.  Now that I have children who are 33 and 30 years old, I have to admit that a president who was only in his 30s makes me gulp!  :-D

;

Not to mention he only has an undergrad - degree (BA), although from what

I can gather, too much edumacation is a bad thing for pubs.

Agree with you, but again... - (see message)

....how do voters feel about if we ever were presented with a ticket of 30-somethings for Pres. and VP!??

I highly doubt that that would ever happen today, as "35" was probably a lot more "advanced" in age at the time the presidential-age rule was put in place....but still, it WOULD be within the rules! :-o

Just MHO, but it sounds kind of - snobbish

to say he "only has an undergrad." Just sayin.

President John Kennedy was "only" 43... - Dara

I'm not addressing Paul Ryan's age... - ...it just made me start to...

....think about the age requirement for someone to be president.

I'm sorry that it seems that I must not have been very clear in my original post....this isn't a statement about my thinking Paul Ryan is too young. Thinking about his somewhat young-ish age just got me pondering how I would feel if we ever had a couple of REALLY-young (relatively)-but-perfectly-within-the-age-limits nominees.

Like I said, I don't see this as ever likely to happen, but it theoretically COULD. In our 21st-century culture where "40 is the new 30," the age of 35 for president sounds a whole lot younger than it used to!! Doesn't it?? :-D

I think you have to consider when those rules were written... - Zville MT

The average life span was much lower than it is today. Not many men went to any kind of college and if they did, it was usually 2 years of military training or as an apprentice. Most of them at that time accomplished more in those 35 years than many by a much later age these days.

I would certainly vote for someone young if I thought they had the right policies and had the best interest of the country in mind. I would look at the policy before age.

He's only 8 or 9 years younger than Obama - yet has more experience

[ In Reply To ..]
Age doesn't matter. Experience and knowledge does. Paul Ryan has both. I don't care if a President is 30 or 70 years old. If they know what they are doing, care about the country, has the experience and knowledge needed then that is good enough for me. Besides Kennedy was about the same age as Paul Ryan. Mr. Ryan has the experience and knowledge this country needs right now.

Saying he is too young is like saying, well he's Caucasian and that makes me gulp.

Go Romney/Ryan

Nicely laid out - agree with you wholeheartedly

Obama has been a nightmare on steroids. He NEVER had the experience to run this country and it's clear he is totally clueless when it comes to just about everything except socialism. Four years of Obama the Clown is 4 years and 1 day too many.

O.K., oh my gosh....I give up... - ...I still am not making myself

[ In Reply To ..]
clear, apparently. I AM NOT ADDRESSING PAUL RYAN'S AGE!!! I don't know how many more times I need to say it, but I will stop after this one.

If you read my posts with an open mind (not in a defensive manner), I thought I mentioned that it was only in thinking about Paul Ryan's age, which IS on the "young-ish" side (I'm not saying there's anything WRONG WITH THAT), it got me started thinking about the age requirement of the presidency....that's all.

I know how young Obama and Kennedy were when they were elected. I know historical factors....I know that lifespan was much shorter back in the day; and I know that people aged and matured much younger when they married as teens (the women, anyway) and didn't necessarily spend 4 years in college first before beginning to make an adult life. I realize all that.

I just find it interesting to think about the thought that we could conceivably, within the law, have people running for president in their mid- to late-30s. Since that's close to my kids' ages, I just find that a mind-boggling thought, and I was HOPING not to make this a partisan discussion. As this is a "Politics" board, I thought it might be fun to hear others' thoughts on something politically related besides "Go Obama" and "Go Romney" for a thread or two. Forgive me for trying.

Maybe this is where the misunderstanding lies. - (see message)

I went back to re-read my OP because I really can't believe how you Paul Ryan supporters all seem to think I'm ragging on him.

Where I wrote: 'Now, I'm not "ancient" at 56 years old; but when I think about the fact that our country requires that a president only be, what?, 35 years of age, I start to wonder if that's old enough! (LOL)' -- The "that" I was referring to, wondering about it being old enough, is "35 years of age"....not if Paul Ryan at 42 is old enough.

Sigh.

If you're not addressing Paul Ryans age, why did you write - a post addressing his age?

[ In Reply To ..]
YOU ARE ADDRESSING PAUL RYAN'S AGE!!! See I can do that too. I'm actually smiling, so don't take this wrong. I'm trying to figure out why you say you are not addressing his age when all your post talks about is his age.

I read your post with an open mind. Instead of getting defensive saying you were not addressing his age, when your whole post is about his age, why not bring up some other factors (i.e., the good he has done while in office, his experience and knowledge. His understanding of why we need a budget and the experience and knowledge of getting one done.

If you read my post with an open mind you see I wrote I don't care if they are 30 or 70, as long as they can get the job done. I guess I just don't find it as interesting to focus on their age as I do in their experience. But that's just me.

Don't know what you want to be forgiven of trying. To not make the discussion about age when your post is just about age? I guess if you had written about something besides his age you'd have the discussion about something politically related.
I think it was just for conversation's sake... - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't mind a conversation about his age, but to write a message addressing his age - then say you didn't address his age
[ In Reply To ..]
just didn't make sense.
I think you just misunderstood - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
No, I think the OP was not clear. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
She wrote a post addressing his age (read the post and you will see it's all about his age). Then she wrote a post saying she didn't address his age.

I didn't misunderstand. The OP should have been clearer and wrote about something besides his age if she didn't want to address his age.

More experience? - How do you figure that?

[ In Reply To ..]
President Obama took his first public office on Jan 8, 1997. Ryan was first sworn in as US rep Jan 3, 1999. They have both held public office continuously since that time.

The president has served on both state and federal levels, whereas Ryan has no state level experience. Also, on the all important cons lithmus test, Paul Ryan has no "executive" experience. The same cannot be said of our Chief Executive. The closest he ever got to "running a business" was a short stint as a marketing consultant for his family's construction business.

For the record, I think Ryan qualifications are acceptable, and fairly impressive for his age, despite the fact I cringe at the idea he would ever get close to the Oval office at any point in time BEFORE serving a term as VP, and even then, ideologically speaking, I think he and his running mate would be a terrible choice for our country.

Anyway, I have to wonder. Are you padding his resume by including his earlier Capitol Hill gigs such as his jobs as a waiter, fitness trainer, conservative advocate and speechwriter to come up with this "more experience" claim, or what?

Obama Resume - short and sweet

Obama: Community organizer, senator for 2 years. This doesn't include the last 3 years, because that would be reflect negatively and show what little experience he has.

Paul Ryan: Member of US House of Representatives for 13 years. Served on the Budget Committee, Committee on Ways and Means, Subcomittee on Health, Congressional Middle East Economic Parnership. Knowledge and experience working with budgets. The list goes on and on and on. He is more experienced, more knowledgeable, shown that he cares about the country and the people in the country. Understands the basic concepts of the constitution. There are pages and pages more, but that's enough for now.
