Presidential vacations

Posted: Jan 12, 2014

Reagan, H.W and W. Bush all took more vacation days than Obama so let's put an end to that particular discussion.  Everyone needs time off, especially POTUS.

Let's not. (sm) - Abby

I, for one, don't give a rat's patooty about how many vacations or golf games he plays. The more time he spends out of the oval office, the less damage he does. Well, not really, but you get the gist. What burns me is the amount of money he spends on these vacations, and sending AFI or 2 back for special trips to satisfy Michelle's whims. Reagan and Bush went to their HOMES. The Grand Obamas rent a palatial estate in his "home state".

Those trips were not vacations - Truthhurts

They were meetings with the presidents of the country and humanitarian aid which included AIDS, ARV drugs, mosquito netting, malaria prevention, etc. which after he left the presidency, he and Laura are still doing on their own dime.

"Mr Bush has done more for Africa than any other US president," according to Joel Barkan, a senior associate at the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

five times on her own once taking her daughters with her and going on safari. Sounds like a vacation to me. And since the Obamas do not have a ranch or a family compound in Maine, where do you want them to go on vacation - the South Side of Chicago? All these trips are expensive. If you're going to oppose them, oppose them all, not just Obama's.
There will be no further comments - from me to you

Why should I oppose vacations by the Bushes since they went to their - Truthhurts

home in Texas or G.W.'s FATHER's compound in Maine?

Where would I like Obama to vacation? His home, which is Chicago, not Hawaii. Hawaii isn't his home. If it was, he wouldn't be spending so much money on a 5-star hotel and/or rental mansions like he did on one of his vacays.

The so-called African safari trip was in combination with the one AIDS awareness and good will visit. She did not go without G.W.

Now you have a problem with the Bush's children going on vacation? If you're going to oppose them, oppose them all, not just the Bush's.

I couldn't care less if the kids go with the parents, be it Bush or Obama.

What I do care about are the trips around the world that MO took with just the kids and that weren't goodwill trips - IOW, hubby wasn't with so they were vacations because all they did was go sightseeing.

The one African trip where she listed the girls as "Senior Staff" really got to me as did the idea that her mother, and niece and nephew also went along as well as all the security staff, makeup and hair stylist.

That trip cost over $900 just in food purchases on the flight and over $424K for the aircraft and crew ALONE. I didn't check to see what the arrangements for hotels, etc. were, but just researching articles all claimed that her trip (with the extra family members) cost taxpayers well over half a million dollars, possibly in the range of $700,000 or $800,000.

BTW, she ALSO took in a safari on that trip.

I'm with Abby though on the more time out of the WH the less damage done. The problem is who is footing the boot for he and Michelle's multi-million dollar vacations. (hint - it's not them).

We don't elect people so they can reap the benee's of multi-million dollar vacations while people in the country are suffering.

Here's a friendly helper that might work for you. If we want to have a discussion about Obama's vacation days we will have one. You don't have to participate.

still applies to him. No more, Mr. Rich Guy. You're the leader of the free world now (LOLOL) I expect you could pay your own way, and pay for the people you're encouraging to be on welfare, while you're at it.
Welfare is not as superficial as that - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
...throwing out empty accusations that Obama is "encouraging" people to be on welfare. It sounds real witty, but the sad truth is: there are people who are on welfare that don't want to be, most of them, in fact.

It really is necessary to try to find solutions to this problem... OR we can just throw out uninformed, blanket accusations to any party/president in office, just because it's easy.

By just abstractly throwing out accusations does no good and reflects a lack of insight into the real problem.

Here's something that might help (link). I'm sure this is not the only source on this topic. There are many other sites and sources that might help us (those of us who have never had to rely on the government) to better understand and hopefully extend some empathy for those who are not in a good place.
I wonder, what are the numbers - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
with regard to people who don't want to be on welfare and those who make it a way of life? I always thought a big part of the liberal agenda was to keep people oppressed and wanting more, and then give them all kinds of perks and they'll continue to vote for you and on and on.
I never heard that being a liberal agenda. Wherre did you - hear that?
[ In Reply To ..]
There will always be people who abuse the system. From the top (rich) to the bottom (poor), but that is no reason to believe there is no need to assist those in need.

I don't have a reason for not helping others, I'm just wondering what the numbers are or if they are known. As for where I heard it, I cannot cite a source. It's more or less the word on the street so to speak. I mean no disrespect to anyone.

[ In Reply To ..]
presidents have been taking vacations since George Washington. It's rather a misnomer, however, since they are on duty 24/7/365. Another fact is that presidents have always paid for personal expenses, lodging, and food for trips that are not for official business. Although I haven't seen anyone begrudging presidents for the food they eat at the White House (yet), the fact is that they also pay for that and any personal expenses incurred.
I personally don't begrudge the first family - a nice vacation,
[ In Reply To ..]

but so many posters want the Obamas held to standards that no other president has been held to. They all go on trips at the taxpayer's expense and the comparisons I've seen show that the Obamas are not the worst. Her color and political affilitation have absolutely NOT ONE THING to do with this discussion. She was brought up because Michelle Obama was visiting her on Maui. I don't know if Oprah even has a plane. If she does, that's a good question the poster brought up. She certainly can afford it. So, okay, there's the financial status thing. But the color of her skin, OMG. That really has NOTHING to do with this. Please be careful when trying to play the race card. BTW, I welcome opposing points of view, I learn from them.

Fine back at ya - Mrs. Tingles

[ In Reply To ..]
First, lets be truthful here, you dont care about presidents before GW, so we will stick to the facts of both vacations during their first terms, since Obama has only been in one term so far (you compare 4 to 4, not 4 to 8).

President Bush - During his first four years he took 84 days of vacation - Most at Crawford Ranch (HIS HOME!!!) and Camp David. Not millions of dollars a day hotel rooms. President Bush also spent much of his time working. If you include the white house parties in 8 years the bill comes to $25 million. (cut that in half since we are only comparing 4 years to 4 years so that would be 12.5M

Obama (and his family) are world travelers (on our dime that is). One trip to Hawaii cost us $4M. Multiply that by three other vacations, their daughters trips, and Michelles trips and all the white house parties it comes to a whopping $57M. So not even close to President Bushs. It surpasses Bush by $32M (that 32 million) dollars.

Laura Bush took one vacation each year with her girlfriends to a lodge in Washington. Michelle takes 5 or 6 vacations to 5 star $1000 a night hotel room (not including her friends and expensive shopping trips. Michelle alone has cost the tax payers $10 million dollars on herself.

Golfing while in office Bush did 24 rounds of golf in 8 years (cut that in half cos you cant compare 8 to 4), so that would be 12 rounds. In just his first 2 years Obama did 40 rounds of golf, multiply that by 2 and you have 80 rounds (although its much higher than that, but well give him the benefit of the doubt). Tally Bush 12 rounds, Obama 80 rounds.

The problem is not how many vacations he takes, the problem is the cost to the taxpayer. In 2013 he averaged a vacation every month. Bush's vacations were not lavish. The problem also is the Obama's are spending our tax money on their personal gratification/fun/enjoyment, while the country is in a recession and Americans are suffering.

The Bush's traveled to Africa and other countries promoting Aids awareness. Remember? Bush gave billions to Africa to combat Aids.

Oh sure Michelle must have been promoting something in Spain, on that exclusive beach, that exclusive hotel and at exclusive restaurants. Nobody has just figured out what it was or why it required so many of her friends to accompany her.

"I'd like to see issues discussed here (preferably one at a time) rather than the one or two word posts like "Huh?" or "You're kidding," etc. I think you assume I'm baiting because you know my liberal leanings from my former posts.
