combat troops, security forces, and counter-terrorism training, peacekeeping, consulate and embassy personnel. The US has a military presence in more than 150 countries where active-duty services are being carried out. Regardless of mission type, these troops are "deployed" outside the US and its territories. By no stretch of the imagination is the US at war in these countries. President Obama did not say ALL troops would be home by the end of 2014. What he said is that drawdown will reach the stage where the former combat mission will transition to one of support.

Here is a link that can explain the drawdown process far better than I ever could. It was last updated in September 2012, when there were still 63,000 troops stationed in Afghanistan. Not only is there a big difference between combat and support missions, but there is also a huge difference between 63,000 this time last year and 66% of 8000-12,000 NON-COMBAT troops who have no authority beyond counter-terrorism support and training purposes.

Love your succinct, rational post. If an intelligent post like yours is enough to get some of our right-wing partisans to understand the difference between war and deployment, they might find it possible to dismount their "he's lying" hobby horse.
