THIS is what the Trumpeters are supporting

Private money has long played a big role in American elections. When there were limits on how much a single donor could give, however, it was much harder for an individual to have a decisive impact. Now, Potter said, “a single billionaire can write an eight-figure check and put not just their thumb but their whole hand on the scale—and we often have no idea who they are.” He continued, “Suddenly, a random billionaire can change politics and public policy—to sweep everything else off the table—even if they don’t speak publicly, and even if there’s almost no public awareness of his or her views.”Private money has long played a big role in American elections. Thus, MONEY OUT of politics - Sm

Don't doubt someone funded her too. Open the box....neither is the right way.

That's what you say you want... - But I don't think you do -sm

The article seemed to be taking issue with a billionaire who devoted money to a PAC. You can't outlaw that without restricting the freedom of speech. Is that what you want?

If you were to take "MONEY OUT of politics," the only people who could afford to run would be self-funded billionaires, like Trump. People like Obama couldn't afford it. Is that what you want?

A better way is what we have right now. Let all sides spend what they want. It's up to the electorate to weigh the options and figure out the lesser of two evils.

Anything else would trample on the bill of rights.

I'm sure you disagree. Please make your points. For starters, please tell us how you would be protecting freedom of speech, while making it illegal for certain people to broadcast a political message.
REAL campaign contribition limitations - Everyone can have the same

Free speech then....what a joke, you say THAT is free speech. How contorted
Do you want the money out or limitations on the money? - sm

There are already limitations on contributions to PACs and campaigns. I'm not seeing anything in the linked page (from fec.gov) that indicates someone can write an "eight-figure check." What am I missing?

Did it bother anyone else that the author of the article kept mentioning how there's "no public awareness of his or her views?" Aren't people's views supposed to be private whether they choose to contribute to a campaign or not?

It all seemed rather -- to borrow a word I heard on MSNBC recently -- Hitlerian.
Obama was funded by George Soros. He has access to more money - than Trump. They do it through

money laundering.
I meant to give you a thumbs up. The Supreme Court - ruled money equals free speech.

So many people here seem to love the Supreme Court's ruling on other things, including gay marriage and Obamacare, so maybe they should take this issue to them.
I heard some analysts say that a border adjustment - tax would be a more powerful
[ In Reply To ..]
stimulus to the US domestic economy than lowering tax rates, de-regulation, or the repatriation of corporate earnings held overseas.

If we enact all of those policies, it is off to the races - Reagan style growth.

I just thought I would add some food for thought instead of all the hate Trump polemicist discourse that seems to have overtaken this board. Not really much to read here anymore.
I get tired of hearing about "loop holes" which are just - tax laws. The home mortgage deduction is
[ In Reply To ..]
a "loop hole" that I'm sure we all take advantage of.
I will admit that I am not an expert - old and burned out
[ In Reply To ..]
on tax loop holes but when Warren Buffet says that he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary, I believe him, and that tells me that the tax code needs to be changed.
Keep in mind. His secretary is a 1 percenter. - On salary, that means an income tax
[ In Reply To ..]
rate of about 40 percent. Add to that social security, Medicare, and state income taxes, and the secretary pays well over 50 percent in just direct deductions alone.

And he wouldn’t be paying a lower rate if he had included Berkshire stock as part of her compensation!

The only buy-and-hold strategy Buffet employs is buying politicians. He’s as big a manipulator as Soros. His public persona may be the Oracle, but he’s the consummate insider.

He was one of the largest players in destroying the housing market. Now BH is one of the largest real estate holding companies in the world. Pretty cool scheme to steal your home and then rent it back to you.

Paying and owing are 2 different things. Buffett owes about 2.5 billion and he is fighting the IRS.
Simple solution. Determine what tax breaks Buffett got - that arent' available to the middle class,
[ In Reply To ..]
then lower rates for everyone else accordingly.

Warren, there is nothing keeping you from not taking deductions, firing your attorneys, and just donating more money to the government.
Thanks! LOL - sm

Thanks. I appreciate the note.

I'm surprised I'm only at 7 dislikes. I thought there were more haters* of free speech here. I guess not.

Interesting footnote: Citizen's United wasn't a campaign finance case. It was a freedom of speech case. CU wanted to air a film that was critical of Hillary and were shut down by the judiciary until the Supreme Court overturned it. You probably already knew this, but I just learned it recently.

* -- I realize "haters" is an overly harsh word and I apologize for using it. But I'm having trouble getting "people who feel discomfort at having to hear opinions that differ from their own" into a sentence that ends with "here."
I wear the thumbs down here as a badge of honor. - I know this is not the place for adult

You are right about Citizens United. I remember that.

Still Waiting For Some Outrage From TrumpetersMar 19, 2017
about his numerous trips to his Florida mansion to play golf.  Every trip costs the country 3 million dollars and he has already spent more in 2 months than Obama spent in a year yet there were numerous complaints about Obama wasting taxpayer money.  Also proposing tax cuts for billionaires and cutting funds for Medicaid.  I see a lot of posts on this board about being Christian.  Do these policies fit in with Christian principles? ...

It's Nice To Hear Of Women SupportingOct 30, 2013
Whatever your thoughts on Hillary Clinton, I'm encouraged by women in Washington who are rallying and willing to support Hillary rather than turn her into the enemy, the competition, etc.  I know sometimes that women in highly competitive jobs do not support one another, in fact sometimes try to bring each other down (not that men are any different), so this just struck a chord with me, for that reason. ...

My Tax Dollars Are Supporting Obama's Campaign For ClintonJul 05, 2016
How much money does it cost for Air Force One and the presidential motorcade to be in Charlotte to campaign for Clinton?  That is our money.  I tried to find out if it is common for the sitting president to go out on the campaign trail for the next president and found that in most cases, they were very careful not to get too involved. - but Obama doesn't care and neither does Hillary - they think they can do no wrong.....   I still believe that when we elect a president, th ...

Brown Stands By Supporting A Tax-subsidized Golf Course Over 9/11 Rescue Workers. Jan 19, 2010
State Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA), the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate special election on Tuesday, voted on Oct. 17, 2001 to deny financial aid to Red Cross rescue workers who had volunteered with 9/11 recovery efforts. As a state representative at the time, Brown was one out of only three legislators who had opposed the overwhelmingly bipartisan measure. As ThinkProgress reported on Saturday, at the same time Brown was voting against the 9/11 rescue workers bill, he sponsored House Bill 4 ...
