[ In Reply To ..]This isn't regarding Syria, but Egypt. There were a few articles out during the uprising that were about Muslims protecting Christians and Catholics. They surrounded their churches and held hands while the people inside prayed.
Just wanted to remind us all that war brings out the bad in us, but it also brings out the good. Stories like this are a nice way to keep yourself from painting all people of one faith with one brush.

[ In Reply To ..]The Al Qaeda affiliated Al-Nusra referred to in the reports on Maaloula, ARE NOT supported by the US in any way, shape or form. Here are the groups that are:
1. Free Syrian Army (FSA). 80,000 strong, founded in July 2011 by a group of Syrian Army deserters at the beginning of the conflict who joined protesters in support of Assad's removal from power. Their ranks include Sunnis, urds, Turkmen, Palestinians and Druze. They are viewed as the primary SECULAR movement in Syria, as opposed to groups such as Al-Nusra. While both groups fight against Assad, they now also fight with each other, based on their secular vs theocratic views of Syria's future.
2. Idlib Martyr's Brigade, formerly known as the Syrian Liberation Army. A loose coalition of armed civilians who claim they are approximately 71,000 in number, many youths among their ranks. Their only objective is to remove Assad from power, but do not have the needed weaponry to do so. They are, however, very well connected, and claim to have networks that span 80% of the country.
3. Ghuraba al-Sham. Essentially extinct secular group which ISLAMIC opposition forces wiped out. Their weapons were confiscated by the fundamentalists....in other words, groups like Al-Nusra are their enemies.
4. Ahfad al-Rasul Brigade, an independent opposition group of about 15,000. Sole purpose is to unseat Assad.
Those are the only groups the US, UK and France provide with NON-LETHAL support. Here are the groups they do not support. They are primarily hard-line fundamentalists who are trying to co-opt the revolution. Many groups listed below are quite small.
1. Syrian Islamic Front. Claim 25,000 members.
2. Al-Nusra. Only 7,000 members, founded in January 2012. Responsible for the attack on the Maaloula. They have been designated as an active terrorist group by the US.
3. Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. A cluster of Iraqi insurgent groups. Their membership has actually shrunk since 2005, from 10,000 to around 2,500 currently.
4. Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan. Trying to turn the political arm of the revolution into a full-blown jihad.
5. Fatah al-Islam. Primarily Palestinians. More military than anything else but do employ jihadist tactics.
6. Authenticity and Development Front. Make wild unsubstantiated claims of having more than 50 "brigades."
7. Abdullah Azzam Shaheed Brigade. Militant Salafists, AQ affiliate. Suspected of isolated attacks they deny.
8. Jund al-Sham. Linked to AQ and Hezbollah. They have declared their Islamic emirate in Syrian Qalaat al Hosn, near Homs. No one outside the group takes them seriously.
9. Iraq Free Iraqi Army. AQ ties, primarily advancing an anti-Shia agenda.
AS you can see, the generic term "rebel" is not a one-size-fits-all concept, especially since groups in the second list claim to be allies who support groups in the first list when, in fact, they really don't have a horse in this race and are there to advance Islamic agendas not specifically focused on the priority of removing Assad from power.

Let them fight it out between themselves. If the winner happens to be a terrorist group, then it would be clear as to what should be done.

Usually the last thing they want to do is let their enemies know they have spies inside various levels of security, or to clue them in on possible actions being taken, by revealing secret information.
I'm actually as sure as I can be that we know exactly who did what, where, when, to whom, and why. We've compiled vast files of information on all of these groups, including names, photos, recordings, and so on.
BTW, those who work undercover in what to me would be a terrifying hell gathering this information deserve our gratitude and respect even though we'll never know who they are or the prices they pay.
