Rep. Trey Radel charged with cocaine

Rep. Trey Radel, a freshman Republican from Florida, was arrested on Oct. 29 for possession of cocaine in the District of Columbia, according to D.C. Superior Court documents.

Radel, 37, was charged with misdemeanor possession of cocaine in D.C. Superior Court on Tuesday. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

The Florida Republican is a former journalist, TV anchor and radio talk-show host. He never held elective office before winning his House seat last November.

He would have been charged with felony possession rather than misdemeanor. Under Rick Scott's drug testing policies, Radel would have been terminated were he a state employee. Despite his having cosponsored a bill to reduce mandatory minimum sentencing for drug users, he still voted to drug test SNAP recipients while cutting $40 billion in food stamps funding. It would appear his Tea Party version of a sympathetic soft-on-addicts stance does not extend beyond the privileged classes. This liberal hopes he gets the help he needs for his alcohol/addiction problems.

As a conservative, I say throw him out. But we - get different treatment

Drug use is a reflection of character, but an even better reflection of character is to practice what you preach, especially if you're an elected official.
