Obama insulted the Brits

Posted: Jul 27, 2012

Unceremoniously and without explanation, Obama had the bust of Winston Churchill shipped back to England. Mitt Romney said Thursday in London that he will return the bust of Winston Churchill to the White House, according to AP reporter Kasie Hunt.;

a very gracious, more plausible yet speculative explanation from PM Cameron. His sensitivity toward the torture of President Obama's grandfather was compelling, and certainly doesn't sound as though Britain was highly insulted by the change. Quite the contrary. The mere suggestion that the bust loan was in any way symbolic of even the remotest of similarities between W and WC would be more than enough reason to get it out of the Oval office and place its more appropriate location outside the treaty room.

Did Brit cons attack the PM's apologetic tone - regarding UK torture of MauMau detainees?

[ In Reply To ..]
They sure did, despite chilling parallels drawn between those earler UK practices and the Assad regime's ongoing realtime 21st century nightmare. The wrath of neocons displaced by more evolved political moderates knows no limits, regardless of which side of the waters they come from. Must be some weird aberration in the gene pool.

Embrace genocidal brutality? No problem. Denounce the eery application of this template precedent dictators use against their own people? Not if their lives depended on it. Fortunately, cooler heads prevail these days. The Brits owned up to the transgressions of their past just last week by admitting to the torture AND officially apologizing for it. Civilized folks, those Brits, even if it did take them 60 years to get from there to here. Never too late to do the right thing.

Hahahahaha!!! Is that the best - the GOP can come up with? nm

Besides the fact that that's not the only thing he gave her, I would bet that iPod didn't wind up in the collective "royal garage" like the last gazillion gifts she has gotten. OMG! A gift she could actually use. Think of that. And what did the all mighty queen give as a gift in return? How about a signed pic of herself...the same thing she gives everyone...lol. Now, that's the embarrassing part.

Sigh...apparently not an accurate story. - Where does Mitt Romney get his "intel"?

[ In Reply To ..]
Sooooo, moved to the official presidential residential quarters isn't QUITE the same as "back to England." Also, we all know that every president rearranges and decorates his space to his own liking whenever a new Administration moves in. I've never heard of any of them having to give an "explanation" for how they choose to rearrange items in the White House, unless they just WANT to mention it.

If Romney should happen to win the election and wants to exchange a past heroic president's likeness (Lincoln) with a past British hero, I guess that's his choice, but, at any rate, I can't imagine THAT making a great impression on his fellow Americans! But, go right ahead....he'll be allowed to rearrange, just as Obama should be allowed to.

As an aside, I think that in the past, the new presidents are even given a budget to use for redecorating the residential quarters. I don't like that idea!! If they feel strongly enough about it that they can't live with the decor for 4-8 years, let them use their own money for redecorating. After all, you have to be sooooo wealthy to run for president nowadays....they're a lot wealthier than most of us taxpayers who are paying for the cost. :-(

What's that hissing sound I hear? - sm

I see where the confusion lies in the minds of Obama opponents who only see what they want to see.

Why would you post this when the factual reports all state pretty clearly that the bust is still in the White House. In the "residence." (That's the area of the White House where the First Family resides, in case there's any "confusion.")

All the factual accounts of this non-story state that the claims that Obama "removed" the bust from the White House, to the British Embassy or elsewhere, are false. (That means "not true," in case there's any further confusion!)

Boy oh boy--just because Mitt Romney offended the British by a few unintentionally careless words (which I think some of the Brits made way more of than was necessary), I guess the Romney supporters now have to dig up some way they can say, "See!! Obama offended them, too!"

The moral of the Mitt-Romney-offends-the-host-country story is that poor Mitt doesn't seem to know quite what to say when he's asked a question for which he hasn't fully prepared a canned answer.
I read it here - among other places:

The bust of Sir Winston Churchill, by Sir Jacob Epstein, was lent to the George W Bush administration from the UK's Government Art Collection, for the duration of the Presidency. When that administration came to an end so did the loan; the bust now resides in the British Ambassador's Residence in Washington, D.C. The White House collection has its own Epstein bust of Churchill, which President Obama showed to Prime Minister Cameron when he visited the White House in March.

feverisly trying to instigate a duel between identical Churchill busts, replicated by the original British sculptor, hoping to resurrect a more enduring flap out of the ashes of a burned out pseudoscandal. LOL. Sheer lunacy, but understandable. It's much easier than trying to find destruction-proof qualifications, which seem to be in rapidly dwindling short supply. Judging by these desperate measures, they appear to think Candidate Block-of-Clay needs all the help he can get.

A campaign's never-ending search for talking points with even a smidgeon of traction is a sight to behold! No wonder the Brits are having such a field day.

cheerfully reported by The Daily Beast, can often lead to egg-on-face embarrassing moments such as these. The article sources should have been your first clue there just might be tongue-in-cheek SARC afoot. Since Romney can simply buy libraries at will, he probably never heard of returning properties that have been borrowed on loan. He's more the since-I-own-you-you-can't-make-me type, particuarly if there is even the remotest suggestion of political gain, however comical, mixed into the equation.

This GOP/CON compulsion to base political campaign strategies on distorted laughable one-liners lifted WAY out of context and transformed into "bust"-able falsehoods proved fatal last time out. Guess some folks just have to learn their lessons the hard way.
PS: Pay special attention to the "cold tea" - MauMau torture paragraph.

an interview I saw with Howard Dean a day or two back. He was asked to try to help Charles Krauthammer out when he drew a blank on adjectives to decribe gaffegate. Dean (with his occasionally clenching hands folded neatly in front of him and resting on the table) did a superb job of keeping a poker face. It was apparent the effort he was expending to do so was impeding his usual spontaneity. All he could come up with was "Bad. Really, really bad." I confess I had to agree with him when he graciously added that, on a human level, he almost felt sorry for Mitt..."sort of."
