[ In Reply To ..]Bush at least spent time in the White House. Bush never went on lavish vacations that the taxpayer footed the bill for either. In the EIGHT YEARS, it is $20 million. Obama's was that amount in ONE vacation.
The "blame Bush" deflection is quite old, too. You don't seem to be able to come up with a good reason for Obama's flights of fancy.
The Obamas have gone to Martha's Vineyard multiple times while the country was in recession and Americans were struggling to find jobs. Michelle Obama has taken a trip to Spain and a 2 ski trips to Aspen (that I know about).
The separate vacations at $180K an hour for the planes, the frequency of trips, the forever campaigning, and the separate planes are the problems with the Obamas. Obama spent $20 million on just 4 Hawaiian vacations so far. It is estimated that the Obama's cost us $1.4 BILLION A YEAR, which does include security but still, Obama took 13 vacations in his first term about 83 days. His annual vacations to Hawaii alone have cost taxpayers at least $20 million during his first term.
In 2011 alone, Michelle Obama cost taxpayers $10 million on vacations herself. Obama's fantasy golf outing this year cost local law enforcement in Florida a reported $78, 205.
He cut his salary by $20,000 this year (will he continue to have his salary cut next year?) but that's just a drop in the bucket compared to all the trips and expenses that are on the backs of the taxpayers.
Even the NY Times is starting to have a problem with it because of all the cutbacks "normal" people have had to do:
When he wants a weekend away, he can fly to Florida to golf with Tiger Woods.
When his daughters take spring break, they head to Aspen to ski. He winters in Hawaii and summers on Martha’s Vineyard.
But this summer’s trips come as federal employees are tightening their belts. Last Friday, four federal agencies closed down — the Environmental Protection Agency, the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and even the Office of Management and Budget — as employees were ordered to take the first of several unpaid days off.
Many workers are canceling summer vacations of their own. Across the government, cutbacks are everywhere. The Blue Angels did not fly at the Naval Academy commencement, Head Start programs are turning away children, and there are no summer jobs for college students to cut the grass at Antietam.
In a nod to the pain that federal employees are feeling, Mr. Obama announced in April that he would cut his salary by $20,000.
Despite that gesture of solidarity, the president’s official and political trips still generate second-guessing. This summer he plans a diplomatic foray to Africa that will cost millions of dollars and involve hundreds of security, communications, military and technical personnel, just as it did when George W. Bush and Bill Clinton went.
White House officials said they were not deterred by fear of criticism, although some said the president would probably avoid safari time.

I have neither the time, nor the inclination, to go tit-for-tat by digging up how many times W and Laura slept apart, traveled to two separate destinations, took real vacations versus phony "working" vacations (a habit of W's the press covered extensively at the time) appeared at campaign events or WHATEVER. I have no problem with either POTUS and FLOTUS (GOP or DEM) taking time out, traveling back home, attending campaign events or the expenses they incur dressing themselves or their children, where their kids go on spring and summer breaks, what they eat, what kind of recreational events they choose to indulge in, the kind of jewelry they wear, the gifts they give...or the expenses ANY of that stuff incurs. IMO, it simply goes with the territory of executive privilege and security imperatives those we elect to the highest and most difficult office in the land enjoy. Many of the things the GOP try to obsess over are paid for by their salaries...every penny of which they EARN 100 times over, considering what they are subjected to in terms of the privacy they and their family have to sacrifice while in office.
My beef is simply with the hypocrisy the GOP demonstrates every single time they bring these things up and try to make an issue of it all. I'm not holding my breath waiting for you or any other pub to address that part of the discussion. It is what it is.

My beef has always been the partisanship of the parties, never working for the people, just working for their party to to heck with what the people want.
My beef has always been with those in government thinking they're better than us, making laws for us to follow while they refuse to follow the same laws.
My beef is also with the politicians on both sides campaigning for office stating what they would do for the people; then when they get in office, worry about how much money they're going to make and how much they can make before the citizens get fed up with them and throw them out of office.
Lastly, my beef is with the fantastic health plans they have and then the outrageous pensions they can collect after only been a representative for ?? years, while there are millions of people who cannot survive on what they were able to save and lose everything they ever worked for if they must go to a nursing home.
