She must really think we are stupid. With the server in her own home, I believe emails can be removed directly from there. Can't they?

If a file is deleted say from recycle bin and the pointers to where that file is stored in the hard drive quit getting used then after a period of time (and I don't know it, maybe depends on volume and available space) then the computer might save over that piece of information after a period of time. The computer saves randomly to disk and usually fragmented, you can't control it. The organization we see in the GUI is just for people. Not the machine and the work the machine does which is the recalling of the data from where it is saved physically in the hardware or disk. The software makes it easier for us or we would have to use machine language or at the very least something like DOS and a black screen. Instead we get a Windows or a Windows-like environment to play in.
GUI is graphical user interface - just for us humans.
I worked for MRC Group and we used windows 3.1 and word perfect 5.1 for dos
I think calling it windows was a stretch. We had half a second of GUI and bam right into dos. Hard drives are fairly delicate, so we had to Park our hard drive before we turned off the machine. Stop it from spinning, I think, so it couldn't be damaged and data lost.
It's this inability to delete without blowing the OS away that could make everything a little problematic for HIPAA compliance, if you think about it.
Especially if the old disks aren't getting fdisked or "blown away". Deleting it doesn't delete it.
