I guess asking for criminals not to be able to buy a gun at a show is just too much to ask.
The problem with that is - sm

Criminals do not buy their guns at gun shows or online. They obtain them by illegal means. I'm all for background checks. Think that's a good thing, however, it will not stop the criminals from obtaining weapons. Seems like background checks are only for upstanding citizens who are exercising their constitutional rights. Even if you had the strictist of rules and God forbid a confiscation of everyone's weapons, the criminals will continue to obtain their weapons illegally like they've always been doing.
How do you know they do not buy guns at shows - and online?
[ In Reply To ..]
Of course it's not going to stop every criminal who wants a gun from getting a gun. But why make it so freaking easy?
Again, they get their illegally. You are not making - anything "freaking" hard for them
[ In Reply To ..]
You really think criminals who plan to commit crimes are going to "legally" get their weapons. Oh yea. The only people they are making it hard for is you and me and other upstanding citizens who wish to purchase a weapon for home protection or hunting or whatever their reason. Criminals do not buy the weapons they are planning to commit a crime with legally.
Again, how do you know? - sm

Not all people with criminal records are hiding in back alleys, buying and stealing guns from each other.
There are plenty of people who have records that don't want to deal with people who are shadier than themselves. They're not going to buy their guns on the street. It's easier and safer to go to a gun show.
33 state require NO background check at gun shows. - sm

Many of those same states require no registration or licensing. Please explain to us what would keep criminals in those locations from acquiring weapons at gun shows or on the internet. Here's my source. I've not seen a single piece of data to back up the claim that all criminals obtain their weapons illegally. Have you?
http://www.governing.com/gov-data/safety-justice/gun-show-firearms-bankground-checks-state-laws-map.html
Regardless of state requirements (regarding FFL licensed dealers) - Federal reg. supersede state reg.
[ In Reply To ..]
If an FFL dealer is selling at a gun show, they have to do a background check regardless of at a show, their store, etc. Only private/non-FFL sellers at gun shows do not.
http://smartgunlaws.org/background-checks-policy-summary/
Same goes for online purchases. When FFLs sell guns online, the gun has to be shipped from that FFL to a local FFL, where you have a background check and pick up the gun.
How is it hard? I purchased a gun at a gun store - had a background SM
[ In Reply To ..]
check, which meant I had to wait a few days to pick up the gun. Big deal. How is this a problem for law=abiding citizens? THis is just common sense. We have to stop the sale of assault weapons, the sale of huge clips. Eventually, this will slow down how many of these guns are available. Have to think long term.
So why have any laws at all? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Criminals will obtain guns no matter what. Drug dealers will deal drugs no matter what. Thieves will steal no matter what. People will drive drunk no matter what. So why not just throw out all laws? Why even bother to make laws if people are going to break them? Why should owning deadly weapons be easier than voting?
No one is going to confiscate your weapons!!!
I bet all the gun lover, massacre-condoning conservatives will be the first ones to come here saying "oh how horrible, I grieve for the families, everyone pray for these people, etc." when the next tragedy occurs from the guns for everybody mentality.
Tell it to Missouri!!! - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Laws are there for a reason. However, nobody should be putting stronger restrictions on law abiding innocent citizens. They need to be working on how to make the criminals pay.
If you think nobody is going to confiscate your guns think again. Well they won't confiscate mine because i don't have any, but read what's going on in Missouri. There is a proposal the democrats are trying to pass that gives the right to police to go door to door and remove all guns from everyone. Oh yeah, those criminals will just give them up. How bout reading the news and doing research before you tell me nobody is trying to confiscate weapons!!!
Gun-lovers, massacre-condoning liberals will be the first to say - all of you give up your weapons, but we get to keep ours.
In case you haven't noticed this but the latest tragedy did not involve guns. What are they going to do next, go in and take away everyone's pressure cookers.
How do you make a criminal pay when he kills himself - after he kills?
[ In Reply To ..]
And that Missouri proposed legislation does not propose police going "door to door and remove all guns from everyone."
"Under the proposed bill, “Any person who, prior to the effective date of this law, was legally in possession of an assault weapon or large capacity magazine shall have ninety days from such effective date to do any of the following without being subject to prosecution.”
Here are some additional provisions found in the gun control bill:
(1) Remove the assault weapon or large capacity magazine from the state of Missouri;
(2) Render the assault weapon permanently inoperable; or
(3) Surrender the assault weapon or large capacity magazine to the appropriate law enforcement agency for destruction, subject to specific agency regulations.
[..]
5. Unlawful manufacture, import, possession, purchase, sale, or transfer of an assault weapon or a large capacity magazine is a class C felony."
It actually sounds like it makes a lot of sense to me. Why would you try to mislead me or anyone else reading your post that police were going to go door to door to confiscate all guns? I did my research, yours seems to be lacking.
And lastly, I wasn't speaking of the last tragedy. Why would you bring that to the conversation? It didn't involve guns. Some things (common sense again) are just out of anyone's control.
But kudos on the pressure cooker line.
So are you saying - sm

If I decided I wanted to buy myself a gun for whatever reason. I am a very rational person. I've handled guns before, I know the laws, I know when to use them, how to keep them safe, etc, etc, so because some nutbag insane young kid who listens to God knows what that tells him to go out and hurt people, who obtained his guns illegally and not had any background check, because he may do this that I don't have the right to own a gun?
Glad you liked the pressure cooker line. It goes to show guns are not the only thing that can kill. When you have someone nuts enough to think about this anything can be made. Think I even read that somewhere on the internet there are directions on how to make a gun. Which then brings to mind the question, would you be for banning the internet, or having every person in America undergo a whole invasive personal questionaire to find out if they are sane enough to read the internet?
I don't understand how you would be prevented from - owning a gun
[ In Reply To ..]
unless you didn't pass a background check.
I never said guns are not the only thing that kill. The rest of your statement is a little extreme. I'll just stick to arguing already-made everyday run-of-the-mill guns and the issues we are facing now regarding same.
Anyhow, reading the Internet might be covered under 1st amendment, which has many reasonable restrictions (child porn, for one), just as the 2nd amendment should.
It's an assault weapons measure. Good for them. - sm

I could have sworn gun huggers support states rights to legislate their own gun laws. Last time I checked, the Missouri legislature is not a one-party rubber stamp. Besides, it's a red state with 106 GOP/56 dems in the House and 24 GOP/10 dems in the Senate. The measure will never fly. Much ado about nothing.

The proposal to "confiscate" guns in Missouri has about a snowball's chance in hell. This state is R.E.D. It's the St. Louis/Columbia and some of KC areas that are more progressive. I'm surprised they haven't tried to redistrict those areas yet but apparently RoyBob Blunt was too busy making sure Monsanto was pacified. Being a card carrying member of CREWS' Most Corrupt the guy's gotta keep up appearances.
"criminals" - massacre-condoning liberal
[ In Reply To ..]
here's the thing: Many, many gun crimes are committed by people who WERE NOT CRIMINALS IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Lots of people are not criminals until which time they shoot up their classmates in Columbine, elementary school students in Newtown, or a movie theater in Aurora.
I can guarantee you: No upstanding citizen will take umbrage at the request to register their weapons.
Of note, God has nothing to do with guns.
Look at how many upstanding citizens were killed by regimes that saw them as a threat - Begins with registration

Senate Fails To Pass Modest Gun Control Bills. NmJun 21, 2016
WASHINGTON -- Just over a week after the worst mass shooting in American history, the Senate failed Monday to advance a pair of modest and popular gun violence reform measures.
One would have barred gun sales to anyone who has been on a terrorist watch list in the previous five years or who is "reasonably" suspected of posing a terrorist threat. Another would have tightened the background check system to cover the so-called gun show loophole and all internet gun sales. About 90 ...
Has Anyone Ever Used An Online Service To Do A Background CheckJan 07, 2017I may start slowly dating again, and I want to be able to check on people. It's a lot different and a lot worse nowdays than it was 30+ years ago when I was dating at age 18 and you had somewhat better chances of trusting people you met back in those days. That's sad, but a girl has to look out for herself and use any means to be safe. ...

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens.
Many major news outlets made a basic error when reporting on the Census Bureau study. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...
