I learned that it is a right and a duty to vote for my political representatives. As usual, before every election there is all sorts of trumped up shenanigans going on to discourage and suppress voting.
One that has happened to me personally a few years ago was I received a call fraudulently telling me I did not have to turn in my absentee ballot by the day printed on the instructions. My vote would not have counted if I had followed that phone call.
Lately it is has been:
In Nevada: Republicans Attempt to run an ad telling Latinos "Don't Vote". It backfired on them.
At Hughs High School: There are allegations that there was wrong-doing regarding the encouragement of voting by high school age students. Nothing has been proven. How many times have we seen allegations, only to have them dissipate once the damage has been done. Do the "Swiftboat" ads ring a bell?
In 2008, in Wisconsin, The Republican Party attempted to have all 60,000 voters in the heavily Democratic city of Milwaukee who had registered since 1/1/2006 deleted from the voter rolls. The requests were rejected by the Milwaukee Election Commission with Republican commissioner Bob Spindell voting in favor of deletion.
On October 5, 2008 the Republican Lt. Governor of Montana, John Bohlinger, accused the Montana Republican Party of vote caging to purge 6,000 voters from three counties which trend Democratic. These purges included decorated war veterans and active duty soldiers.
In the 2002 New Hampshire Senate election phone jamming scandal, Republican officials attempted to reduce the number of Democratic voters by paying professional telemarketers in Idaho to make repeated hang-up calls to the telephone numbers used by the Democratic Party's ride-to-the-polls phone lines on election day. By tying up the lines, voters seeking rides from the Democratic Party would have more difficulty reaching the party to ask for transportation to and from their polling places
Ok, people, wake up and take a little harder look. Think about why are they trying to take away your vote or your neighbors. Who is trying to buy your vote? Don't be fooled by distractions and side issues like Clarence Thomas and someone getting fired from a news station. Look at the issues that really relate to you, and who is actually trying to get something done, and who has been the road block to getting things done.
