Civics and Ethics Lesson 101

Posted: Oct 23, 2010

I learned that it is a right and a duty to vote for my political representatives. As usual, before every election there is all sorts of trumped up shenanigans going on to discourage and suppress voting.

One that has happened to me personally a few years ago was I received a call fraudulently telling me I did not have to turn in my absentee ballot by the day printed on the instructions.  My vote would not have counted if I had followed that phone call.

Lately it is has been:

In Nevada: Republicans Attempt to run an ad telling Latinos "Don't Vote". It backfired on them.

At Hughs High School: There are allegations that there was wrong-doing regarding the encouragement of voting by high school age students.  Nothing has been proven.  How many times have we seen allegations, only to have them dissipate once the damage has been done.  Do the "Swiftboat" ads ring a bell?

In 2008, in Wisconsin, The Republican Party attempted to have all 60,000 voters in the heavily Democratic city of Milwaukee who had registered since 1/1/2006 deleted from the voter rolls. The requests were rejected by the Milwaukee Election Commission with Republican commissioner Bob Spindell voting in favor of deletion.

On October 5, 2008 the Republican Lt. Governor of Montana, John Bohlinger, accused the Montana Republican Party of vote caging to purge 6,000 voters from three counties which trend Democratic. These purges included decorated war veterans and active duty soldiers.

In the 2002 New Hampshire Senate election phone jamming scandal, Republican officials attempted to reduce the number of Democratic voters by paying professional telemarketers in Idaho to make repeated hang-up calls to the telephone numbers used by the Democratic Party's ride-to-the-polls phone lines on election day. By tying up the lines, voters seeking rides from the Democratic Party would have more difficulty reaching the party to ask for transportation to and from their polling places

Ok, people, wake up and take a little harder look. Think about why are they trying to take away your vote or your neighbors. Who is trying to buy your vote? Don't be fooled by distractions and side issues like Clarence Thomas and someone getting fired from a news station. Look at the issues that really relate to you, and who is actually trying to get something done, and who has been the road block to getting things done.

bombarded with examples of how the Dems do this too. I am sure they have done things, but on the same scale? Maybe we will find out when others post examples. The thing that bother me to no end is the tea party voting for a party whose goal is to outsource as many American jobs as possible and could care less about the middle class. The original tea party organizer recently posted a blog about how off track the tea party has become from the original. They claim it is a grass roots organization, but it has been taken over by politicians and big business, who could care less about them. Very disheartening.

The point is to be informed - angela

I know that everyone is going to have their favorite example of voting suppression--I certainly did not try to list every instance in my previous post (including the Florida/Katherine Harris/Jeb Bush/GW/Gore fiasco.) However, I believe all people over the age of 18 and who are eligible should be able to vote. Voters should be informed and educated enough to make their own decisions, even 18 year olds. Hopefully they are educated enough to know that they should not check a box just because they saw a name on a sign. If this is untrue, then there is something seriously wrong with our educational system.

The attempts to subvert voting rights is nauseating, whether it is because of the Supreme Court decision treating corporations as individual citizens, foreign influence, mass media smear advertisements, or opinionated political commentators posing as journalists. The people who want to suppress voting rights are down right unpatriotic. By all means, if you do not feel you are informed enough to vote, you should not do it, but it is your loss. Please don't complain later.

You dont fool anyone. Your point was to slam - th Pubs only and accuse them, obviously.nm

The talks as if ALL republicans are trying to take away people's right to vote, the still sour grapes about Gore's losing the race, the constant talk about republicans do this or that, but when it's brought up that the democrats are doing the same thing it's dead silence. The constant assumptions that if anyone is republican/independent they must watch Fox, etc, etc. (as if that's a bad thing - LOL) I've just stopped reading those messages because they are usually filled with lies, accusations without proof, rants, and hypocritical statements.

It's not unexpected with the elections coming up, but the attacks are getting pretty bad. I just sit back and say I can't wait until it's over. Hopefully we will see a positive change and equal balance restored.

ooh yes...lets talk about the Gore fiasco - Talk about sour grapes

[ In Reply To ..]
In Florida the polls closed and the votes were counted. Bush won. Then in some of the districts the count was close to the point so according to law a recount was required. The recount was made and Bush was still the winner, and according to the law the secretary of state declared Bush the winner and that should have been the end of it. But Gore tried all the sleazy maneuvers to get it overturned. The Gore camp went as far as trying to coerce some of the republican electoral college to vote for him.

Then we'll talk about the democrat in Palm Beach found with an ballot-punching machine in his car, Gore claiming he received more votes, yet it was more votes than people who actually lived in that county, and then we have the county that Gore claimed every single person who lived there voted for him, when in fact people from that county came out and said they voted for Bush.

Talk about trying to steal the election. Whether you want to believe it or not, and no matter what sleazy liberal film maker makes a movie out of it swaying it the way they wished it was, Bush won fair and square.

Jeez - talk about sour grapes. Time to get over it.

Okay, lets go there, and get a few of our facts correct along the way.

Iâve learned that voting is neither a âright and dutyâ but a personal choice one makes based on the best information we have. Iâve learned that if a person does not want to vote either that is perfectly fine. Iâd rather have people who are not educated about the issues and candidates not vote rather than have someone vote for someone because someone bought them some ice cream or cigarettes. So whether a person votes for someone or doesnât vote at all is a personal choice. If my choice is Hitler or Stalin Iâm sure as heck not going to vote for either.

Your phone call telling you didnât have to turn in your ballets. Yes I got one too, from the democrat party in my state. They told me that there was an extension and I could turn in my vote up to 72 hours later than the date on the instructions. I then received a call within a couple days from the republican party telling me there is fraudulent calls being made stating the voting date had been extended when in fact it hadnât.

The truth is both parties get nasty come elections. Funny thing is they never campaign on things they have done that are good. The negativity of the ads questioning peopleâs faith, digging back to their childhoods to try and find any piece of dirt they can⦠well its just disgusting and luckily the American people are smarter than that.

You spoke of the ad in Nevada. Hereâs a little more information you conveniently left out. "The Democratic party went to the Latino community and made solid promises that they would deliver immigration reform within a year," de Posada said. "Then they did nothing." Wow, talk about caring so much for the Latino community.

The ad was NOT asking Latinoâs to vote republican, but by not voting it would send a message to Washington to show the Democrats the Latino community is unhappy with the democrats once again not helping them. However, of course it was everyoneâs own choice to do whatever they wanted to do.

If youâre going to go down that road then you better include the democrats screwing our military out of the right to vote. Looks like their motto is âEvery vote counts as long as its for usâ.

Soâ¦lets talk about voter fraud and how it shows they donât care about the people of this countries votes. Every time anyone creates hundreds of votes from a machine in the back of a car, or they rig the voting machines to have all votes get counted towards one candidate, or they takes ballots from a republican district and throw them in a garbage dumpsters, or they send in hundreds of absentee ballots under other peoples names, well that sends a loud and clear message. First, it tells us they donât care about the American peopleâs votes, and second, it sends the message that they will do anything to win including cheating. We can talk about the Black Panthers and what they did. We can talk about Michelle and Chelsea campaigning inside voter polls for people to vote for her husband and mother. We can talk about a hundred different issues that show the democrats do not care whether you vote because they are going to cheat to get what they want. They for some insane reasons believe the seats âbelongâ to them.

The reasons why the democrats are in a panic right now is because everything theyâve done while in congress has been to serve themselves and their Wall Street buddies and their banking buddies, and of course their wealthiest 2% friends. The democrat party, with the exception of a few, do NOTHING to help the American people. And even yours truly tells democrats to vote against the will of the American People. Oh yes, not to mention the loss of 2.2 MILLION jobs. And the democrats have no ideas to get the country out of the mess and put people back to work, get the housing crisis fixed, etc, etc. Nothingâ¦.they donât have one idea.

Right now I see the republicans talking about the issues. Their experience in creating jobs, what issues they are for and against, how they are going to vote, and what their voting record has been. Issues, issues, issues. That is what the conservatives are talking about.

I also say people need to wake up and do their own research. Whoever your congress persons are going up for election read, read, and read more about them. Make sure you know what their voting record has been. What issues they support and what they donât. And are they the kind of people that will listen to you when you contact their office about a concern you have or are they going to tell you how stupid you are and you are nothing more than a piece of furniture.

So, yes people wake up. Donât fall for the lies that ârepublicans are trying to take away your right to vote and your neighbors right to voteâ. That is the worst Mathewism Iâve ever heard. Its just a bunch of lies.

You know whatâ¦Juan Williams being fired is not a distraction. It is an issue that affects every American in this country. That spoke loud and clear of what is going on now and how that is going to affect each and every one of us. Some liberals have no tolerance for anyone with a different viewpoint then them. If you think that has no effect on any of you, then you must not be interested in politics or discussing politics. It relates to each and every one of us. Donât be distracted by the left-wings attempt to minimize such an egregious offense that could happen to each and every one of us.

The truth of the matter is that the republicans have been trying to get things done in congress. To work for the people they represent (yes, there are republicans in congress that WE voted for that are there to represent US â its not only democrats in office). They have been trying to work for us but they have been stopped at all levels by the democrats. They are being closed out of meetings that they should be included in, and just ignored by the self-serving democrats. The republicans are the ones trying to work for us, but have not been able to because of the democratic party who rule over everything and stop anything coming through that is submitted by someone with the âRâ after their name.

So I say wake up people. Do not be fooled by the lies and intimidation of the democratic party. Do your own research and vote for the person you think best represents you.

Oh, and dems dont do it? get real... Where I live, - WakeUp

[ In Reply To ..]
in Ohio, they bussed a bunch of newly registered high school kids to take them to do early voting, and only gave them dem ballots... look at what happened in Philadelphia at the last presidential election. Its fine to wake up, but please, dont love the dems so much that you are blind.
