Immoral profits

_"I'm very pleased that (Democratic leaders) will be talking, too, about the immoral profits being made by the insurance industry and how those profits have increased in the Bush years." House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who also welcomed the attention being drawn to insurers' "obscene profits."

But were the Bush years golden ones for health insurers?

Not judging by profit marginsprofit growth or returns to shareholders. The industry's overall profits grew only 8.8 percent from 2003 to 2008, and its margins year to year, from 2005 forward, never cracked 8 percent.

The latest annual profit margins of a selection of products, services and industries: Tupperware Brands, 7.5 percent; Yahoo, 5.9 percent; Hershey, 6.1 percent; Clorox, 8.7 percent; Molson Coors Brewing, 8.1 percent; construction and farm machinery, 5 percent; Yum Brands (think KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell), 8.5 percent.

how can they afford to spend over a million dollars per DAY to fight healthcare reform? They sure are investing a lot for such crappy profits......possibly the OVERHEAD due to bloated salaries are eating up the profit margin, eh?

Could be. I don't understand why "they" are "fighting it" though. - Sheeples

It was my understanding that insurance companies were not being put out of business by the public option, only being provided another competition angle to the scheme of things.

That said, I totally agree with Obama in that those corps who took taxpayer funded, bail-out funds should be cutting some of their CEO's salaries. That stands to reason, IMHO.

Taxes On Dividends Are ImmoralJan 04, 2013
Does any of you who think dividends should be taxed know that dividends are paid with after tax money?  Dividends are what is left over after the company pays its taxes.  In some cases, some of the dividends are dividends received by the company from other companies meaning it has been taxed multiple times. Also, non-weathy retired people rely on dividends in retirement.  It is not only the rich that receive dividends.  If not for dividends in retirement, retirees would run ...

Big Banks Profits/bonuses DownJan 18, 2012
As you know, there has been a "move your money" movement and the OWS occupation of Wall Street.  Big banks, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan have recently reported a big drop in profits.  The smaller regional banks are doing okay.  (Yes, there are some like Citibank where things are getting better, but they really had no other direction to go as they had already bottomed out).  I just want to congratulate the 99% for making a difference on Wall Street and in Wisconsin.& ...

After Record Breaking Profits, Health Insurers Feb 12, 2010
Profits for five largest health insurers were up 56% in 2009. Let's hear a big round of applause for status quo. Just say no to health care reform and claim a sweeping partisan victory. What I want to know is how the obstructionists and their supporters sleep at night. http://blog.healthcareforamericanow.org/2010/02/11/insurers-enjoy-record-breaking-profits-as-they-cut-27-million-people-from-their-rolls/ ...

Sotheby's: Record Profits--union BustingNov 10, 2011
What is wrong with this picture? Class warfare? Just plain old greed. Sotheby's is in a labor dispute with the unionn that represents the art handlers working at the New York City auction house. The contract between the two parties expired on July 1st, 2011, and despite ongoing negotiations, there has been no agreement on a new contract. Local 814's stance is that because of Sotheby's record profits for 2010 (over $680 million), Local 814 should not be giving in to any of S ...
