A casual friend of mine takes

3 tabs at a time, 3 times a day. Her doctor doesn't even know she takes any ASA at all. That can't be good for her ~ to say the least. I can't seem to get through to her. I have asked her to at least tell her doctor or his nurse. She is 74 and has poorly controlled diabetes. Just wanted to bounce this off of someone.

[ In Reply To ..]I was going to, on my own, start an 81 mg aspirin every day because my husband does (he has had afib). My doctor said, "If it's not broke, don't fix it." I was actually surprised to learn that in mostly women 50-60 or older, an aspirin a day is not a good idea unless you have a specific reason for taking it. It actually increases the risk of stroke, etc. Guess I will go back to the vitamins. He really acted like he could care less about that. I am over 50 and wanted increased calcium. All he said was "go ahead." My bone scan is good, so if it doesn't help, it probably won't hurt.
At the very least, if she won't talk to her doctor... - IMHO
[ In Reply To ..]...tell her to be on the lookout for GI bleeding. An elderly male friend of mine was taking just 1 ASA (I don't know dose) per instruction of his doc. It caused a stomach ulcer and friend ended up in the hospital, requiring 3 units of RBCs.
