Super hyper dog! HELP!

Posted: Apr 8, 2011

My neighbor had to leave urgently last night due to an unexpected death in the family.  They left their little dog with me and I guess it's having separation anxiety (not unusual), but his horribile anxiety and skiddishness is rubbing off on my two dogs!  I got no sleep last night and didn't know how to comfort him.  I crated him (he came with a crate and random, fastly give care instructions), swaddled him, put him in bed with us, put him in a dark room, a lit room, music...  he whined and cried and ran around like a crazed rabbit!  He broke vases, pictures, tore right through a screen on the porch, is trying to attack my cats (who are at least 2 times bigger and have No fear of any dog!).  He's peeing on everything (marking??), has pooped 4 times since last night, IN MY HOUSE!  Now everytime i adjust myself in my chair, all the dogs jump up like someone kicked them!

Right now my dogs are sunning on the porch like they do every morning (thank goodness) and the guest dog (that looks like a mutant minature irish setter/corgi mix...) is running around the yard as if he's being chased my invisible wicked winged monkeys!

I don't want to call them.  They are dealing with enough.  I don't want to crate him and let him howl.  I don't want to take it upon myself to given him Valium (kidding!!!!)  Benadryl actually.  I sure could use some tips on dealing with a super hyper dog.  I have no evil wingged monkey repellent.  DH said if he didn't settle down through the day he was going to take him to a boarder and tell the neighbor it just didn't work out.  Help a gal??!!

Try to relax... - momofjacks

The poor dog is stressed, uprooted and suddenly in a new home. It sounds stupid, but try to relax as much as you can. Dogs pick up on stress, which is probably why your own dogs are acting funny as well. I would try giving the guest dog some one-on-one time - taking him for a walk or going out and throwing the ball for him if it doesn't seem like a ball would upset him more. Give him a couple treats or try sitting down and hand feeding him some of his own food. Try to bond with him a little. Walks are usually pretty helpful though with dogs who are in a stressful situation. Bring him back and introduce him calmly to your household again. Maybe try to isolate him from the cats though. Maybe try calmly walking him through your house, after his walk, on the leash, give lots of praise and little treats or pieces of food when he going into a new room or area. Make sure you take him outside often as he is probably just stress pooping and peeing, but also could be marking his territory. Just try to stay as calm as you possibly can and remember that it's only temporary.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'll take the Valium (I mean Benadryl...) and take mutant for a one-on-one lovely walk. I actually did put the cats in one room. they don't seem too bothered, they've taken over the guest room. And I have been putting him out often and so far only one poop incident.

Thanks again! Have a good weekend!

You're welcome. I hope you find peace this weekend. s/m - momofjacks

You could always call the owner and tell them the dog seems stressed and would they mind asking their vet to fill a prescription for an anti-anxiety med for the dog or if the vet can give you the safe dosage of Benadryl for him. I really hope the walk helps and that he calms down. Try to keep reminding yourself that it's not permanent. Sadly, by the time he adjusts to your home, his owners will probably be back and he can go back to his own home. I wish you a peaceful weekend.

Give him Benadryl - sm

I give my dalamtian benadryl when she gets too nervous. She is 40 pounds and I give her 1 pill and it does not knock her out, but just mellows her. The poor guy is obviously upset and this probably will calm him down, so don't feel bad about it.

exercise, exercise, exercise/nm - tire him out

I would not give him Benadryl - cindy

unless you know he can take it okay. I had a dog that had allergies and whenever he would start on the Benadryl, he would shortly after that have a seizure. The vet said that he has never heard of that, but once he had a couple of seizures, they all seemed to be in proximity of getting Benadryl. The pet stors have herbal supplements called Pet Calm but again, if you are not sure about what he can take, I would not do it. I would go ahead and call your neighbors and just say he is a little anxious because he is missing his mommy and daddy and ask if you can give him something. Although they are dealing with a death in the family, I know if it was me, a little distraction would be welcome and knowing that my little guy was missing me, would be comforting to me that I am missed and loved at a time of sorrow. Otherwise, I would do with walking and exercising. Good luck. I had a hyper dog and at one point considered putting him on Ritalin like my son, so I know how they can try your nerves! Drink a glass of wine and relax.

AGAIN SUPER HYPER DOGApr 11, 2011
So, guest dog has been having it very, very rough.  He is just not happy at all, period.  I took my little shih tzu (who is very, very calm and very, very good and very tiny @ a whole 5.5 pounds) and guest dog for a little walk.  He got totally spooked by rabbits running everywhere (it's spring, there are rabbits all over the park) and started yanking, screaming, jumping and strangling himself.  I let go of my dog's leash (she stays put) and tried to pick him up, he ...

Billionaires And Super PACsSep 27, 2012
"Remember when President Obama’s re-election campaign and its allies complained about billionaire Sheldon Adelson giving cash to Republican super PACs? They apparently have no such qualms about radical left financier George Soros doing the same thing. Today, news broke that Soros is handing $1 million to Priorities USA Action, President Obama’s chief super PAC. It is no coincidence that this week, President Obama refused to meet again and again with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. ...

Bah Humbug, Super Tuesday. Why Is This Permitted At All.Mar 01, 2016
Seems to me each party changes the voting laws to the point where we the people never get the government wants. All of it rigged. I see it more this year. If Trump or Clinton walk away with this, then I say we need to challenge voting systems, especially for president. Sen. Bernie Sanders, the independent-turned-Democratic Senator from Vermont, proudly states pervasively that he does not have a Super PAC and he's not beholden to Wall Street ties in the same fashion as Hillary Clinton. That's true. There is no Bernie super PAC per se, but he does benefit from the super PACs within his coalition. Moreover, he's benefited from indirect Wall Street contributions and regularly attended retreats hosted by their lobbyists, according to the Wall Street ...

Nixon once said what would prophetically become the mantra of the ultra-neoconservative: "People react to fear, not love; they don't teach that in Sunday School, but it's true." I am typically immune to most of those now-tired party tactics, much like the villagers in the story of the "boy who cried wolf." Instead, I have gone past annoyed with it and now straight to mystified by the never-ending gullibility of other villagers, who know there's no actual wolf, but just seem ...
