AGAIN SUPER HYPER DOG

Posted: Apr 11, 2011

So, guest dog has been having it very, very rough.  He is just not happy at all, period.  I took my little shih tzu (who is very, very calm and very, very good and very tiny @ a whole 5.5 pounds) and guest dog for a little walk.  He got totally spooked by rabbits running everywhere (it's spring, there are rabbits all over the park) and started yanking, screaming, jumping and strangling himself.  I let go of my dog's leash (she stays put) and tried to pick him up, he struggled, wiggled and squirmed, finally bit me in the face!   I dropped him, stomped on the leash so he woudn't run, but he wiggled out of his collar and bolted...

OMG...  I am so glad that he ran straight for the area in the part where the fence ends in a corner, so he was like in a corral.  He was literally jumping so high and so much he had a foothold on the chain link fence!  3 park workers saw me struggling to catch the poor little guy and helped out.  One also got bit.  Finally we wrangled him up.  one of the guys gave me a work shirt to wrap him up in and I brought him straight home, swaddled him, talked baby talk to him and his poor tongue was hanging out so long and he was panting so hard and fast I thought for sure he'd have a heart attack and die.

I don't know how else to help this wreck of a dog.  Right now he is on the floor right beside me in his crate, door open, sleeping the sleep of sheer exhaustion.  I have a good size bite on my face that is swollen and that will probably leave a scar!

This has been very, very trying.  Like I said, DH wanted to board him, but my thinking is what if the family can't afford that?  I sure don't want to pay for it.  so he said he'd try to borrow a large dog crate from a friend, and that maybe he'd be safer and calmer just staying in that.

He is so unhappy and my carpet stinks of dog pee now because he is peeing and pooping EVERYWHERE.  Even pooped on our bed.

So anyway, I'm still opening to other suggestions?  He WILL NOT play.  When my dogs start to play, he wants to fight them or hump them.  Please help!  Thanks in advance.  (no more walks...)

he needs a muzzle - nuttzarella

When the dog is out of the crate, he needs to be wearing a muzzle, not just for your sake, but for his and everyone else. A muzzled dog will generally not work itself up into such a frenzied state because it will accept a beta position and give you the alpha position. You can get one for $7-18 depending on where you shop. Some have a hook for a leash, so you can pull his head around if he does get out of control. You can also pick up a body harness for another anchor spot. If you have 2 leash points on the dog, you can pull the leashes in opposite directions and it can give you more control if it escalates to an out-of-control situation (also in case the collar comes off again, you retain control of the animal).

The dog is not hyper, it is scared and should never have been left with you. I realize it was an emergency but the best thing would have been for them to give you a key to their house so you could go over and let it out and feed it. They had to know their dog does not do well in strange (to it) places. I am so sorry you have to deal with this. I used to have a dog that was so scared of different things and, luckily for the dog, I am an MT that cannot afford vacations, so I never had to worry about where the dog would stay if I had to leave.

It's like comparing a horse in a burning barn. It is desperate to get away from the immediate situation. Having familiar things around would help enormously. If the dog cannot be kept in its own home, though, and if medication is not an option, I would not hesitate to muzzle. I also think keeping it limited to a few areas, mainly the crate, and one particular area to walk it in, would be more comforting and less messy/dangerous for the OP's other animals and house.

Don't take it back into wide open areas. Use small spaces and stay in only those areas. Taking it to a kennel would be like taking the horse to a burning barn. The dog could get too overloaded and I would be afraid for its health.

The swelling on my cheek was getting worse so I went in to the doc. Got 2 stitches and have to take antibiotics. Good thing his vaccinations are current, but animal control made a report and they put him in-house quarantine.

I very reluctantly called my neighbors and explained how he has been. They called their vet and he's being given a RX for a sedative. Poor lil guy, on top of being scared to death is now gonna spend the rest of the week being doped up. They gave me his vet's # and the vet said putting him in a muzzle would only add to his anxiety and the medication will help. He says sometimes it's just best to limit their space (like you said) and keep him crated as much as possible so he doesn't get hurt or lost. He'll be home soon enough and being in doggy prison won't hurt him any.

I feel horrible. I wish I could do something more.

DH is super super mad about the face bite... It sure hurts though. :(

Thanks for all the tips and hints to all!

I belong to a dog behavior science yahoogroup. I would like permission to send a portion of your email to the group to see how they would handle the situation. The group is made up of people from all walks of lives in the dog world---- from vet behaviorist, vets, regular dog trainers, and those you just love to spend time with their dogs.

It sounds like the boy is scared. Don't take him for a walk. Allow him to stay near you and bond with you. Keep the stimulus from your other dogs at a minimum. And, hold that muzzle until you speak to a behaviorist or dog trainer, as it may spook him even more.

Thanks

Super Hyper Dog! HELP!Apr 08, 2011
My neighbor had to leave urgently last night due to an unexpected death in the family.  They left their little dog with me and I guess it's having separation anxiety (not unusual), but his horribile anxiety and skiddishness is rubbing off on my two dogs!  I got no sleep last night and didn't know how to comfort him.  I crated him (he came with a crate and random, fastly give care instructions), swaddled him, put him in bed with us, put him in a dark room, a lit room, mus ...

"Remember when President Obama’s re-election campaign and its allies complained about billionaire Sheldon Adelson giving cash to Republican super PACs? Seems to me each party changes the voting laws to the point where we the people never get the government wants. All of it rigged. I see it more this year. Nixon once said what would prophetically become the mantra of the ultra-neoconservative: "People react to fear, not love; they don't teach that in Sunday School, but it's true." Instead, I have gone past annoyed with it and now straight to mystified by the never-ending gullibility of other villagers, who know there's no actual wolf, but just seem ...
