My dog went to heaven

Posted: Sep 26, 2012

My little girl was not feeling well.  Took her to the vet and she was in renal failure.  She was only 4 years old.  Vet tried to help her but we had to put her down yesterday.  She was my best friend.

My stepmother had to put her dog down because of kidney failure.  Two months ago, my neighbor put her dog down because of the same thing.

What is going on with these animals and kidney failure?

I am so so sorry to hear about your pet. I lost my little mini schnauzer (he just wandered off one day in our back yard and I never saw him again) in July of this year. He would have been 15 September 3, 2012. I miss him every day. As to the kidney failure, check the brand of dog food....Some of that stuff out there is just plain crap.

I was just getting ready to post the same - love all furry things

My cat just recently survived a severe urinary obstruction. I changed cat food right before his illness. I usually bought upper name brand, but the brand I ended up getting (because it was on sale) happened to be very high in magnesium, which is a major contributor to urinary obstructions in cats that may be prone to it.

The vet put him on Hills and meds. He started to get better, so I put down the other food, thinking he was okay, but he immediately relapsed, completely obstructed, and had to go to the ER, was cathed and flushed. That was all the proof (and money spent) I needed. I wasn't looking for proof, but definitely convinced me that their diet has a direct impact on health.

I am so sorry for your losses (OP and recentlyoutsourced). I've always had animals. Most of them have lived very long and productive lives, but when they go, it is never easy.

Our furbabies give us unconditional love and it is so hard on the humans when they cross over the Rainbow Bridge. I'm sure your sweetie knew you loved her very much.

Regarding kidney failure, some breeds are more susceptible to it than others. Other causes may come from ingredients in commercial food or from eating certain people foods. Grapes and raisins, in particular, are very bad for dogs as they damage the kidneys.

Sending cyber hugs to you.

A few years ago the same thing happened to my daughter. She had a Corgi that got sick. My husband at first thought the dog was sick because she missed my daughter. My husband took her to the Vet and the vet said it was renal failure. On top of all that, my daughter and I were out of town on vacation when this happened. Not a very happy vacation.

A friend lost her Corgi - to renal failure

a few years ago. It turned out the dog loved grapes, and they would give him a bowl of grapes as a treat. They didn't know that grapes are toxic to dogs and cause renal failure. Many people foods are not good for dogs, but pet parents don't always know this.

Did all 3 dogs have any food or treat in common that they ate? Anything from China, in particular, is suspect. One item to avoid is jerky treats from China. Those have been linked to kidney failure.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I also had to put my little 8-year-old dog down last Monday because of kidney failure. I still can't stop crying. She had been a healthy little dog.

I'm so sorry you're going through this horrible loss.

I lost two dogs (unrelated, different breeds) to kidney failure 30 days apart. They were both diagnosed at the same time, and I had to give them both subcu fluids daily, and eventually twice a day.

At that time I had three dogs, the two with kidney disease, the other with a prior diagnosis diabetes and on a special diabetic diet. The two with kidney problems were both fed Pro Plan kibble that I bought at the vet's, which led me to believe that since they both ate the same thing, the food was the culprit. I bought at the vet's, so I presumed it was safe. Wrong!

The two dogs I have now, ages 15 and 16, very healthy, have never had any kind of commercial dog food. I cook for them and give them only filtered water. There are super premium dog food you can order on-line, but the cost is more than buying and cooking them "real food."

Anon, I have a question if you don't mind - DogMom

Thanks for sharing your sad story with us. I can't image losing 2 dogs 30 days apart. That's horrible.

My question is what kind of food do you prepare for your dogs and when you say "filtered water" do you mean you have something on your spicket?

Thanks for responding!

What do you cook and how? - AMT

What type of things do you cook them to ensure their diet is healthy? I have a little beagle (joy of my life) and not so long ago, his dog food brand (Taste of the Wild) was recalled. I worry about what I am feeding him. I went back to Taste of the Wild, feeling maybe they would actually be more careful after the recall. We had a Golden Retriever before. Lost her at 14 years and never used to worry about these things because they just didn't seem to happen.

Really hate to hear these kinds of things about people - sm

murdering their animals. You act like you care, but then you kill them. Would you do that to your grandmother??

Sorry, things are not so black and white in real life. And, yes, if my grandmother were in agonizing pain with no quality of life, I would help her out of her misery. Not that you probably have any loved ones, but if you did, I hope you would be able to step out of your self-centeredness for a moment to help them in any way you could.

I usually mind my own business but this post is totally uncalled for. Yea, we are all entitled to our opinions but yours is heart-less.

You think we purchase and rescue animals to "murder them?" My dog was suffering big time. Stopped eating, stopped drinking, stopped playing, etc. She had this god awful ammonia smell coming from her mouth. My vet DID try to help her out. I have this huge bill because she tried everything.

I totally respect my vet's opinion on our next step with my dog. I don't respect a person like you!

What would you have done? Iknow . . . just let her suffer.

Geez it is so easy to be hateful when you - are anonymous

isn't it? You are one sick person, getting your jollies saying something so hateful to this person who is devastated over her beloved pet. Heartless.
The best way to handle a comment like that is - TOTALLY IGNORE IT

It is obviously posted by someone of extreme immaturity and ignorance. The more we ignore comments like that the less we will see of them, hopefully.

Really...are you kidding me? "Murdering their animals". What a totally uncalled for remark. And what a coward you are for posting anon. This lady put her dog down because SHE LOVED IT AND SHE DIDN'T WANT IT TO SUFFER ANY LONGER!!!!

Geez....hope you don't get a debilitating illness. Maybe your family members will let you writhe in pain until you finally pass on.

P.S. What are you doing working in the MT field anyway. Medical workers should have some compassion. Looks like you are completely cold-blooded.

I'm curious to know what you cook for your dogs - MT4Eight

[ In Reply To ..]
too. I have a cookbook for my dogs, but a lot of the ingredients I can't find where I live (small town). I worry about all the "junk" in commercial dog food. I feed Blue Buffalo to my dogs, which is the best I can find, but if I remember correctly even that brand was recalled at one point.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's hard to lose a fur baby. I had a boxer for 10 years that I had to put down because she had a stroke. I know what you are going through. ((hugs))

I am so sorry you lost a friend. I have been through the same after 14 years with my girl a couple of years back. It gets somewhat less painful and you always have the good times together to hold in your heart. I don't know if you are a spiritual person, but I find comfort in that, too. I did much research on the subject after my dog passed and I am of the opinion that animals do not just cease to exist when they die. I have twice heard my girl barking since she passed. I felt it was her way of saying she was okay and she still loved me.

I agree - Christine

We have lost four dogs so far, and I live in fear of going through it again one day with Tiny, our fifth and last dog. My heart goes out to anyone who experiences such pain and loss. It is my feeling that a living being so capable of needing, receiving and returning love does not simply go away. I have faith I will see and be with each and every one of them one day. I am sure you heard the quote, "If dogs's don't go to heaven, then I want to go where they are."
