How do you cook your hamburgers?

Posted: Dec 19, 2011

Today I was cleaning my George Foreman grill (I always wiped the plates after using, but today it got a good cleaning.  It needed it!  Boy what a greasy mess.), and the nonstick coating is flaking off after only about 25 uses.  How disappointing!  I never used metal or harsh anything or metal scrubbers on it.  Because it didn't last long I've decided NOT to replace it.

So how do you cook your burgers indoors?  I have a water grill pan but have never cooked burgers on it, although they would probably rock!!  Also I have an electric skillet but have found that burgers tend to stick in it and not come out so well.  Quite by accident I discovered that under the oven broiler cooks 'em up nice and juicy!

Would appreciate input on a non-messy way (no spatters on the wall!) of cooking great burgers indoors -- if there even is such a thing.  Thanks.

Not terribly heart healthy, but yummy - Burger Queen

I love hamburgers and eat them quite a lot. I use the 90/10 mix and I can get it at Sam's for a very reasonable price.

I use a regular electric skillet and get it screaming hot, then I put a thin layer of butter down (that's the not terribly healthy part) and then slap the burger down after I've seasoned it. I make them fairly thin, so I only need to cook it about 2 to 3 minutes on each side on a pretty high heat. I butter the other side of the pan to flip the burger over into, but again, I don't use a whole lot. The butter and the high heat combination helps really sear the outside and it gets crispy, plus adds a nice flavor to it. I put the lid on the skillet on while it's cooking and that helps a whole lot with any spatters. Cooking something like this, I think you're always going to get a little bit, but the lid cuts down on it ginormously.

The other thing I do is I don't use hamburger buns. I haven't had store bought bread in a long time since I got my bread machine. I use 100% whole wheat flour and I just use slices of bread for the burger and shape it like the bread so it all fits. It tastes so, so much better this way.

Dang it. Now I'm hungry.

Question for you... - about bread.

What kind of bread machine do you have? Is it easy to use/clean?

I've been thinking about getting one for some time, so any advice you have is more than welcome! =]

Thank you, Burger Queen! I will try your method; it sounds delicious. I know how wonderful a pat of butter is atop a steak. Butter and beef just seem to to together.

Actually I think I have discovered a way to cut down on the wall cleaning: I placed one of those thin, flexible, plastic "cutting boards" (actually it's like a huge placemat) sitting on the counter ledge behind the stove area. My place has those textured walls, and picking stuff out of the indentations with a toothpick gets old really fast!!

Thanks again to all for your replies. :)

You can also cover your George Foreman grill with foil, and it will still get the "grill" taste.

I use my Nu-Wave oven for - burgers, meat loaf, chicken,

ribs and veggies. Meat stays juicy, grease drips away. I highly recommend this gadget... not the cheapest small appliance in the kitchen, but very versatile and fast.

I have found that it gives whatever I cook a "flavor" much like the microwave does. It is also big and bulky and now taking up one whole cupboard as it just sits there, unused. If you like a "plastic flavor" to your food, it is fine. Personally, I don't.

I NEVER cook directly on aluminum. - Cook

Thanks for the tip there, but aluminum is a toxic metal. We are exposed to and ingesting way too much aluminum already because they add it to everything (antacids and other OTC meds, etc.). Dissection of neurofibrillary tangles in the brains of Alzheimer's patients reveals that they contain high levels of aluminum, i.e. they are aluminum deposits. I avoid it whenever possible because I do not want Alzheimer's.

Does Anyone Cook With Seaweed? - Have A Question (or Two)Nov 15, 2011
I've been researching eating better for hypothyroidism and read seaweed is very good.  Learned all my favorite veggies (brocolio, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprounts and spinach) -   Anyway....I read seaweed is very good, which is good because I love seaweed soup when I've had it at the restaurant.  So my questions are this: 1.  Does seaweed expire.  I bought some maybe a year or so ago.  The dulse is kind of dry, but figure if it was going into a soup ...

How Many Times A Week Do You Cook Dinner?Oct 16, 2011
I was just wondering if people cook dinner every day of the week anymore?  When I was a kid, my mom made dinner every night except for Fridays which was "eat out" night.  Course mom was a full time mom and housewife.  Today's women generally work FT and are trying to do it all. I've been feeling guilty because I don't cook as often as I used to.  One of my daughter's friends asked me why I never cook dinner!  I do cook dinner, just not as much as mos ...

I got a Panini sandwich maker and it is so much more than that. Today for lunch I cut up some vegetables, squash, onion, zucchini, tossed with a little olive oil, a touch of salt and tossed that on the Panini.
