Help! I am so upset

I just bought a late model used car Saturday, and just picked it up today. I noticed today there is a bad odor when the vents are on that smells like urine. When the air conditioner is on it lasts for just a minute or so, but when the vents are on bringing in outside air it is bad and stays that way. I did some research tonight on this. Here are some things people say could be causing it. I would very much appreciate any input or help you can give me.

Leaking heater core

A/C drain stopped up

Antifreeze or freon leaking

Cabin air filter change needed

Thanks so much in advance. I could cry. I am calling the service department tomorrow. I noticed this for only a very short time when I was in the car Saturday with the salesman, and I did not mention it because it went away rather quickly. We had the A/C running at the time.

If they did not have the car ready until today, you have three days to break the contract. I would take it back and make them find the problem and fix it.

I don't think that is true with a car - but who knows

I have heard that you have 3 days when someone solicits YOU, not when you solicit THEM.

Could be that a cat was in the motor section at one time and sprayed. Also, had sick cat once that urinated on the carpet of my new car. We stripped the carpet out, cleaned down to the metal floor. It was always there when we turned on the air conditioner. Never got rid of it. Good news, didn't smell with heater on...but when it rained...whooeeee. You probably should go back to dealer and question him on some things. Isn't there a full dislosure thing...or is that only on rent. Good luck

Sometimes it helps to let them know that if they don't fix the problem to your satisfaction and without delay, you will publish your story online anywhere you can, such as websites that collect opinions of "local" merchants, contact the local media, and share your story with family and friends, not to mention consumer protection groups.

I bought a used car and it broke on the way home. I called the salesman and he said, "Look lady, you've bought yourself a car!"

I called the president of the bank and he said, "No, lady, you haven't bought yourself a car." He made a phone call to the owner of the car dealership and called me back to tell me where to drop off the keys to that car and pick up my old trade-in.

That may not work these days, but it's worth a try if you happen to have a loan officer who cares and knows someone at that car dealership.

A number of years ago I bought a used car that has served me well for 10 years, and still does!

First off, do your homework. I decided on what make & model I wanted beforehand, and started looking online. I decided to buy from a dealership because I felt I had a bit more in the way of rights than if I bought from an individual seller.

When you find a vehicle you're interested in, get the VIN# (vehicle identifiction number), and for a nominal fee, run it through "CarFax.com". There, you can usually learn a lot about the history of the vehicle... whether it's been in any collisions, how many owners it's had, etc.

One car I was interested in came from outside CA, where the smog requirements aren't as strict, so I'd have to have conversions made. Another car came from an area where it snowed in the winter and they salted the roads for ice, which can mean corrosion underneath.

The third car was the one: It was a low-mileage car with only one owner - it had been a corporate vehicle and got little use.

Okay - now Step Two is, if at all possible, ask the dealer to let you take the car to your OWN mechanic for a pre-purchase check. That was worth its weight in gold, because I knew I was getting a well-maintained car. And my mechanic said the only thing wrong was the radiator fluid was badly in need of changing. I told the dealership, and they did that right away.

Those pre-purchase checks (CarFax and my mechanic) saved me thousands in repairs over the years I've driven that car. The only thing on it that has EVER broken was the water pump. That's it! (And it still got me safely home!)

Thanks to each of you for your comments. I took the car into the service department last Wednesday. The service manager said they used some kind of "kit" for the vents and A/C. I must say it does seem to have really helped, at least so far. I bought a 2008 Toyota Yaris with only 36,000 miles, and it is very clean and looks new. It is one of their certified cars, and I still have 2 1/2 years left on the original warranty, which I am very pleased about. The dealer really seems to back what they sell, and hopefully this will be the end of the odor from the vents. Thanks again!

Well, went to doctor. Didn't give me anything, so I still suffer. My legs just keep getting larger and larger and hurt a whole lot.
