Fifty Shades of Grey?

Posted: Dec 28, 2012

Hi, has anyone read Fifty Shades of Grey the whole series and what did you think of it?  I think my reading tastes may be a little immature for my age.  I am 37 years old and most of the time when someone says something is a "great read" I can hardly get into it.  I have always, since childhood, loved V.C. Andrews and I absolutely LOVED the Twilight series.  So many people wrote reviews on how "immature" the Twilight books were and I thought the movie was quite immature myself, but the book, I could not put it down, I read the ENTIRE book in one day.  I am thinking of starting the Fifty Shades of Grey and again I have read many reviews about the "lack of maturity"  the author's "lack of research" and things such as that.  Just wondering.

I read the 50 series and LOVED them. I was also a HUGE fan of Twilight. You may also be interested in the Fallen series by Lauren Kate. Have you read the Hunger Games trilogy?! AMAZING! I am 28 and I must also "lack maturity" in my reading, lol.

you kind of take them for what they're worth. There are books of equally sexual explicitness before this series. They're nothing award winning, but a decent read. They're just pretty much not for the faint of heart or for anyone who doesn't have a very open attitude about sex as it is not typically mainstream. I enjoyed the second and third ones more than the first, but it's necessary to set up their relationship. It's repetitive and the thoughts and behaviors of the characters are a little immature but you have to remember the characters ages.

Way, way better erotica exists. 50 Shades is housewife erotica at best. It says a lot that it started out as Twilight fanfic; from my understanding, it never rose above that designation.

yeah, hunger games was way better - sm

I think the author repeated herself constantly, it was very poorly written, and although I stayed with it due to the story line, in the end I was very disappointed. I think women have a tendency to believe they can "change" a guy and this story contributed to that theory and I have a hard time with that.

Agree -- poorly written - Ayn

I read the series to see what all the fuss was about and made it through all 3 books, but was definitely disappointed. Author phoned it in if you ask me. Characters NOT realistic and got tired of reading the same handful of adjectives over and over again.
Agree - poorly written, utter crap. - NM

but I could not stand Katnis by the end. What a whiny, selfish character.

But, then, I thought the main female characters of Twilight and 50 Shades were just as whiny and unrealistic.

Is this what "strong" female characters ARE now? No wonder my sons' girlfriends annoy the bejeezus out of me!

The Sevenwaters Triology by Juliet Marillier. Start with Daughter of the Forest. A bit of romance, a bit of magic, a lot of fairy tale. Really neat and good writing.

She also wrote a stand alone book called Wildwood Dancing that I love too--would be considered "immature" because it's a YA book.

A Discovery of Witches is also great, as is the second book (Shadow of Night, although it starts out slow), but make sure you start with Discovery. These have vampires! lol. I cannot wait for the next one.

I like VC Andrews too. I tried to get into Twilight, but I was so annoyed with Bella by the third book I gave up and used google to find out the end of the series, lol.

My sis-in-law loved 50 shades. I made it through about 5 pages. I found the writing to be absolutely abysmal. It's a shame really because she could have done a lot with the storyline.

I bought Fifty Shades yesterday - sm

And I read 150 pages just last night. I loved it, couldn't put it down. Can't wait until I have time to read tonight!

I liked 50 shades, it was worth reading at least once. I loved twilight and have read it over and over again. The movies are definitely not as good like you said, but Love those books!

"The Proviso" is much better written and a better book - Maggie May

It is written by Moriah Jovan, and there are a couple of sequels to it, also. The second one is Stay and the third is Magdalene.

I can't quite figure something out.  I know about what happened with Izzy and Denny. At least I know she stole a heart for him, but I don't know how.  But my question is, when he was "with" her and she kept telling him to go away, and he kept saying, "I'm here FOR you." did he mean that she is sick and is going to die?  Is that why she gave herself a bunch of tests?   ...
