Ever donated to Humane Society of United States?

Posted: May 21, 2010

Did you know that the Humane Society of the United States does not directly support ANY animal shelters, or any of your local Humane Society groups?  Learned this on Brownfield Ag News. It is mainly a political machine, masquerading as an umbrella organization, who believes that eating meat leads to animal cruelty. I was shocked.  I believe most people, like me, would assume that the organization is financially supporting local shelters, or directly helping animals, not just using all the donations for lobbying purposes.

;

Kind of wondered about that... - tootsie

Their commercials are heartwrenching and I have thought about donating in the past. However, I adopted both of my kitties from the local shelter, and I will donate locally, as well as help to supply needed items. I do not trust these big global "societies", including the ones that purport "adopting" children and sending money monthly for their needs. Just do not trust that the money goes where they say it goes! Very sad that you can't trust much these days.

Giving $$ to the SPCA to "help animals" is a crock. Give to your local shelters or Hearts United for Animals (HUA.org) if you want to really help.

it was something I read on Facebook and is incorrect (I am ashamed to say). I did not look it up before posting on this. They do, however, support things that I do not, such as the ban on slaughter of horses for human consumption, which only served to drop the bottom out of the horse marked and actually increased the amount of horses being abused or neglected.
horse slaughter? - tristen
[ In Reply To ..]
I think you need to do a little more research on slaughter of horses then if that is what you feel, your sentence "drop the bottom out of the horse market" does not make any sense, the conditions these horses sent for slaughter are in are horrible such as being transported hundreds of miles with no food or water, then inhumanely slaughtered, if there is an increase in horses then there should be education on how to humanely euthanize not slaughter them.
I have done plenty of research, but thanks for your input. - Kendra
[ In Reply To ..]
and my statement does make sense. Before this, every horse, even an old lame one, had a certain inherent monitary value. While I love my old horses and would never send them to the killers, the fact is that some people would. These are the same people who, if there is not a bottom line amount of money that they can get for them, would allow these horses to starve to death (and they do). So, if you have been looking at the price of horses lately (which I have), you would know that you can buy decent, registered, young horses for $200 any day of the week, whereas before, you would be looking to spend at least $1000. While I understand that some of this has to do with the economy, more of it has to do with there being no bottom line value for horses anymore. That is what I meant by "dropping the bottom out of the horse market." Perhaps, you could do some research, too.

I am still confused by your statements, but I don't see putting a monetary value on a life, therefore, I don't see that your argument holds much water and especially coming from someone who owns horses. As I stated earlier the key is education on humane euthanasia just like we do with the surplus of our cats and dogs which by the way cost over 1000 dollars for purebreeds too and hundreds sit in shelters every day. I guess we will morally have to agree to disagree.
There's a value put on all kinds of lives. - Kendra
[ In Reply To ..]
and I think that people forget that horses are livestock. I guess in a perfect world where my argument would hold water for you, everyone would give everything away for free and it wouldn't cost anything to feed an old unusable horse, but that is just not the world in which we live. Like I said, I love my horses and will keep them around until they either die, or the day comes that they must be euthanized, but euthanasia costs money and not everyone feels about horses the way I do. I would far rather see one mistreated for a few days than for many months. I don't think that makes me immoral, even if you apparently do.
I'm another pro-slaughter person regarding horses... - Hayseed
[ In Reply To ..]
And man, have I received my share of guff about it. I would like to see some changes made to that "industry," though. For instance, ditch the captive bolt and use a regular ol' bullet. Far, FAR more humane for horses. I think they have made great strides as far as shipping horses and banning those double-decker trailers, but there's still room for improvement.

If the thought of a horse being killed for meat sickens you, just be aware that there are far, FAR worse things than death...and the cases of neglect, abuse, and starvation pop up on a daily basis around our country.

Factory farming sucks but so long as people refuse to reign in their own numbers (i.e. population control), it's here to stay, I'm afraid. Too many mouths to feed and the demand has never been greater. We've only got this one planet and it's going to hell in a handbasket. :(

People can make choices. They can choose not to buy meat from chain stores and seek out farmer's markets or organic food stores, which tend to buy locally...the rub is it indeed costs more.
It's meat that's squandering our resources. The intelligent choice is to stop eating it. - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
The three main problems regarding food in this world, as I see it are:
1) The excessive eating of meat, as it is wasteful of our natural resources and much more food can be grown on the land if not squandered in production of animal flesh;
2) Distribution. Much of what is produced is wasted simply because it is not properly distributed (largely due to the profit motive, partially due to simple logistics); and
3) The resource guzzling/hogging western culture. We take so much and give back so little.
Except, of course, that we are omnivores, not herbivores... - Kendra
[ In Reply To ..]
and we need vitamins (B-complex to be exact) that come from ruminant animals. If you want to choose to not eat meat and not use animal byproducts (which I have no doubt you use--drive anywhere lately?), that is fine by me, but why should I have to give up meat? Also, in an already hurting economy, taking out animal agriculture would be devastating to many people.
Our eating meat is ultimately devastating to far more people than would be hurt by - - stopping eating it NM

We are omnivores by choice only...sm - DBK
[ In Reply To ..]
As humans, we do not have the ability to chase down and kill our meat with our bare hands. We do not have the correct digestive system for digesting meat and we do not have the correct type of teeth for ripping and tearing meat. We were meant to grow our food and eat it from the ground and trees. We are omnivores by choice only. Just because we like something doesn't mean it's good for us or we were meant to eat it. Eating animal products is the biggest threat to our health and the reason disease care has gotten so out of control. We can control most aspects of our health but the majority of us "choose" not to do so.
Last time I looked, our digestive system... - Kendra
[ In Reply To ..]
was closest to a pig's (omnivore) and our teeth are nothing like a cow's or a horse's (herbivore) which grow all of their lives. We are not ruminants or even pseudo ruminants. as most herbivores are. How do you figure that we are omnivores by choice?
Here's how I and lots of others figure it...sm - DBK
[ In Reply To ..]
Our teeth are not sharp and pointed like tigers, dogs and other meat-eating animals. We have jaw teeth but they are for grinding our food. Our 2 "eye" teeth do not compare to the teeth of animals who hunt and kill their food. Those 2 eye teeth are to help us grip our food. Our intestines are long in comparison to animals who eat meat. A short digestive tract is required to digest meat properly and like I said before, if we had to chase down and kill our own meat, it couldn't be done. We may catch fish but we could certainly never catch and kill most other animals with our bare hands. Most importantly, God gave us the fruits and herbs (vegetables) not the animals for food. By choice, we eat animals, not because we need meat to survive and certainly not because it's good for us. Common sense prevails. ;)
I'd take it a step further and say that none of that matters. - SM
[ In Reply To ..]
To me, what matters is that we can CHOOSE to be herbivores, both for health reasons and ethical reasons (the latter including eliminating the cruelty to animals as well as helping to support the food needs of this planet's population by not wasting resources on meat production).

I choose to be a vegetarian for ethical reasons (not to mention that my faith requires we abstain from meat). The health benefits are just a bonus.
I also "choose" sm - DBK
[ In Reply To ..]
to be a herbivore for, both, ethical and health reasons but the reasons I give are what most people would argue. They would argue that we were "meant" to eat meat when it's blatantly obvious, i.e. having "common sense," that we weren't. I believe the cruelty that animals have to endure just so addicted humans can have their "fix" is incredibly heartless and meat is NOT good for us and never has been as most addicts would argue. Only the meat industry and those who can't give it up would make such ludicrous statements.
and the way I and lots of others see it... - Kendra
[ In Reply To ..]
is that God gave us both animals and vegetables for food. If you want to be a vegetarian, that's fine by me. If I want to eat meat, I don't think that this means that I lack common sense. Meat is good for us. I will give you that Americans probably eat more meat than we should (as a whole, clearly not you, but eating meat does not make me stupid, as you imply.
You might see it that way...sm - DBK
[ In Reply To ..]
but it's certainly not the reality. God only gave us animals to eat after the flood and it was after the flood that people began to start living shorter durations. I don't believe God meant for us to continue eating meat with the exception maybe of fish. I didn't imply you were stupid but "common sense," if not doctors and other health personnel (at least the ones who realize the myth is false and what they have been taught is outdated and dangerous to everyone's health) will tell us that animal products cause high cholesterol, clogged arteries, heart attacks, strokes, cancer, etc. If you won't listen to those health care workers who understand this, then I reiterate we were not meant to eat the flesh of animals that contains no fiber and is high in fat, antibiotics, hormones and disease. Only those addicted would continue to eat it, knowing the harm it causes. As I said before, common sense prevails.
You contradict yourself...sm - DBK
[ In Reply To ..]
Your one statement says it all, "I will give you that Americans probably eat more meat than we should..." You would never hear someone say, "we probably eat more vegetables and fruits than we should." If something is good for you, you wouldn't have to worry about eating less of it. The fact that you admit yourself is that we eat far more meat than we should. Seeing as how the recommendation for a serving of meat is the size of a deck of cards and that's for the entire day and the recommendation for fruits and veggies is usually "unlimited amounts" your point that "meat is good for us" can't be taken seriously if you have an abundance of common sense. ;)
There are plenty of things that are good for us, even essential... - Kendra
[ In Reply To ..]
that we cannot take in unlimited amounts. Vitamin A, iron, calcium, to name a few. Even water in excessive amounts can kill us, but I guess it takes some common sense to figure that out. Again, thanks for calling me stupid.
It is very very difficult... - DBK
[ In Reply To ..]
to overdose on the vitamins and minerals we get in plant foods on a daily basis, even when we overindulge whereas only a small amount of meat daily can harm us. That's where the common sense comes into play. ;)

Meat eating does lead to animal cruelty. - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know how anyone who is familiar with the conditions in which animals are forced to live in factory farms could continue to eat meat. Cruelty on a massive scale.

I don't believe in factory farms or feedlots either. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
and most areas, you can buy grass-fed beef, free-range chickens etc, if you do some research. BUT, eating meat in and of itself does not lead to cruelty. It is the desire for quick and large profits that leads to the cruelty. Nevertheless, these organizations should not solicit and or collect contributions under false pretenses, which they are doing.

I have to disagree...sm - DBK

[ In Reply To ..]
Eating meat in and of itself DOES lead to cruelty to animals. When so many people become addicted to meat and refuse to give it up, the demand for meat goes up just as the demand for any addictive product would go up. The employees at packing plants are pressured to work harder and longer hours to keep up with this demand. When an animal going to its death fails to cooperate, then that's when the cruelty begins to take place. Also, killing an animal on a daily basis and watching it suffer and die has to affect your mental status. You'll either quit that type of job or become even more cruel. Therefore, eating meat does lead to animal cruelty. It happens all too often.

If you decide to make a donation, make it directly to a local agency or non profict, no kill shelter. All those big agencies have to support themselves financially and their advertising (which is a huge expense by the way) is very misleading. Put your money right back into your communities!

however, they are the ones who fight to pass the laws that protect animals from abuse and they are the ones who go into disaster areas and save the animals that are left behind. So they're not the bad guys. But if you want to do something more direct, I would say support your local animal shelter first.

They do not euthanize. That's the kind of shelter I would rather give my money to.

I also gave 3 times to our local SPCA...every time they stole our dog in the middle of the night, then we'd have to pay $60 to get him back. How do I know? Because our dog's chain wasn't broke. It was unclipped. When calling around to report our dog missing to the police, etc. (in case someone had found him) and calling the SPCA (who never called back), we finally went up there. Lo and behold. There he was. They tried to tell us it wasn't him - yeah, like we didn't know our pooch from day 1. I've heard other horror stories from other people, too, and was willing to testify for a guy that the same thing happened to, but I guess he didn't follow through.

Before I get bashed for this, our dog did not want to live inside from the time we got him. He had a great doghouse, insulated and carpeted, and he was happy. His coat was very thick and long. He was too hot in the house and even the doghouse and a lot of times would sleep in the snow. He had a 'cable run'; i.e., 500 feet of cable with a rolling chain where he could run the length of the yard. In the summer, we would get his coat clipped really short so he would be cooler. We took him swimming a lot and he would spend a lot of time unchained in the garage with hubby. He was a very happy pooch.
