It is very important to use a potting mix, not soil. Watering can be a big issue with containers, they need it more frequently but frequent watering also leaches out nutrients quicker so they often need fertilizing more frequently. I would use a liquid fertilizer (like fish emulsion). To help with the watering issue, I mulch the top of the pot and that is a big help. Of course, one of the most important things is making sure that the pot you are using is adequate for the plant's mature size.

I am doing some in containers this year. I picked vegetables that said "patio" or dwarf or bush. So far they are doing very well as it is easier to place for maximum sun, soil warmth, and wildlife protection.

I've grown tomatoes, radishes, and now squash in containers, (big pots) and had great luck. I also fed them often and during really hot days, have to water them at least twice a day.
