Anyone been to St. Thomas?

Posted: Jan 27, 2014

Hubby and I are going first full week in March.  We have never been.  Any "must see" things we should do?  I am all for basking in the sun with my nook and kindle.  At first, he really did not want to go, and now with the winter that the country has experienced, he is looking forward to getting away from the snow and the cold.  The lady we are renting the beach house from is picking us up at the airport, so if we rent a car, it will be only for a few days (they drive on the opposite side of the road).  I do promise to send warm thoughts back this way once we are there!

Been there 6 times - see msg

We have been there at least 6 times. It's a beautiful island. Our favorite part is the shops and the beautiful countryside.

I must inform you, though, that crime is rather high there, so we have only ever made it a "stop." We have never stayed there more than a couple of hours, just for a run in the duty-free shops. In fact, they made a separate shopping area for just cruise ships coming into port. They have duplicate shops as they do in town, because tourists were getting robbed in town proper, so they built many of the same shops in a little enclave that the townspeople cannot enter.

I never recommend the U.S. Virgin islands for hanging your hat for long. We do the British ones, because there's way less crime--they use their old British rule (steal something, cut off a finger or 2), and it keeps them in line.

This isn't to scare you--you need to use precautions everywhere. Don't leave, say, a wallet or watch on a beach towel while you go swimming, don't even think of trying to hide it under the towel. Get one of those things you hang around your neck that is waterproof and put your cash and personal identification/driver's license. Buy a decent waterproof watch if you're wanting to have a watch With you at the beach. You can swim and snorkel with ease not worrying about your stuff on the towel. This stuff is very general and basic---we use it everywhere we go.

Don't leave a purse hanging on the back of a chair in a restaurant. Do not look rich. In other words, leave the gold and diamonds (even if they're fake) at home. If you look like you're made of money, it increases your chances of getting robbed.

I think St. Thomas's greatest asset is the beauty of the island and their shops. Stick with organized groups on tours of the island.

Yikes, I hope I didn't scare you out of this, LOL. It's been a while since I've been there. I like to think they imposed some harsh punishment, because tourism is probably their main commerce.

Thanks for the info - sm

Thanks so much for the info. We will not have any trouble "looking" rich. We haven't been to an island for about 5 years. I try to take one handbag with me on vacation and it is usually a crossover-type bag. Our house does have a safe in it, so that helps. We are there for eight days and the lady who we are renting from is taking us to the grocery store on our way back from the airport so we can get groceries for the week. She provides breakfast so we are good with one large meal later in the day with a snack in between. Thanks again for the info!

You are welcome - Have fun!-nm

The Words Of Thomas JeffersonJun 21, 2012
The property of this country is absolutely concentered in a very few hands, having revenues of from half a million of guineas a year downwards. These employ the flower of the country as servants, some of them having as many as 200 domestics, not labouring. They employ also a great number of manufacturers, and tradesmen, and lastly the class of labouring husbandmen. But after all these comes the most numerous of all the classes, that is, the poor who cannot find work. I asked myself what could be ...

Dean Koontz/Odd Thomas MovieJan 16, 2013
Spinoff of a thread in Politics. Does anyone read Dean Koontz? I *loved* him in the 80s, and even though he's become kind of formulaic, I still have a soft spot for him. I especially love the Odd Thomas series and I'm stoked about the upcoming movie. The casting is kind of (forgive me) odd, (Patton Oswalt as Big Ozzie? mmmkay) but I'm still shamelessly looking forward to it. I'd love to have seen James McAvoy as Odd, but I guess he's too old. ...

This is a perfect example of why Supreme Court Justices should be impeachable. Justice Clarence Thomas believes the First Amendment only applies to federal government, not individual states. Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas--the Good Ol' DaysOct 20, 2010
Wow!  Surprised this has come back from 1991.  My impression back then was that Anita Hill was very level-headed, was consistent and detailed with her story, even though the questioning went on and on and was quite brutal.   Even though I believe he exhibited disgusting behavior, he was still confirmed as a Supreme Court Judge.  What do you think would happen today if it was a similar situation? ...

Clarence Thomas Is Conspicuously Absent In New Black HistoryOct 05, 2016
Justice Clarence Thomas, the second black man to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, is practically absent from the new National Museum of African American History and Culture. Anita Hill, the woman who accused Thomas of sexual harassment, however, is given prominent billing in the museum. The new Smithsonian, which opened in September, gives Hill pride of place in an exhibit on blacks in the 1990s. The exhibit features testimonies trumpeting her courage and the surge of women’s activism th ...
