America the Beautiful should only be sung in English?

I was in another room and it got my attention. I actually thought it sounded pretty and was an appropriate commercial for an international beverage. I don't think I would feel the same way under a lot of other circumstances, however.

In English, on key, and not degraded by constant trills and changing of melody. It also doesn't need to be stretched out to twelve and a half minutes long whilst attempting to do vocal acrobatics.

Its a song.. the rendition one person holds sacred may not be the one you hold "sacred".. geez..

I listen to our national anthem and can never forget that its set to the tune of a English drinking song.. the tune is NOT EVEN AN AMERICAN TUNE...

I get so tired of this ridiculous view that only MY WAY is the right way.

Funny this post was here. I just watched it and then read all the hateful and ignorant (IMO) twitter reactions. Here is my thoughts on it (for what they are worth).

America the beautiful. Land of the free, home of the brave. A country where people from all places are welcome. We are not just a country full of Americans who speak English. We are a country where there are many different families of different heritages who came here to make a better life. Speaking their own languages does not make them any less American. I love listening to all the different languages and to hear American the Beautiful sung in their language I thought was a beautiful tribute to how much they love our country.

The Star Spangled Banner was not written only to be sung in English. It is a song about our beautiful country. "God shed his grace on thee". Not God shed his grace on only people who speak English.

This is exactly why I served and fought in the military. Freedom for all. America welcomes everyone. I gave all that I had and would given my life for the freedoms our country has to offer to everyone. I think its a beautiful tribute to our country that it was sung in different languages in a beautiful melody. I think it shows the world we are a country full of people of many different heritages. My grandmother was born in Puerto Rico, my grandfather in Canada. I just think it was a very beautiful tribute and I loved it.

They're now patriotic Americans. America SAVED them during the war. If they had not left their countries, they would have been imprisoned, raped or dead. America is their salvation.

I'd hate for anyone to say they shouldn't sing our anthem in their native tongues. I think it is very complementary to hear someone from another country sing their praises of America in their home language.

My parents are intensely patriotic and multilingual--I say good for them that they can speak more languages better than a lot of people can speak just ONE language! And if someone doesn't think they should sing the anthem in their first language, I say they would sing that anthem with such feeling and truth in their hearts that anyone who would judge it is just being closed-minded.

Why? I'd like to hear other languages sing about - how beautiful America is.

I think it's a complement. If anything, their country of origin is the one being insulted. :)

I think if it's sung in other languages, then it - takes on more meaning. (nm)
