How does Trump lose during a govt. shutdown? - sm

I don't understand how Trump can lose during a government shutdown.

Is it not true that Trump and most of the GOP would like to shrink the size of government? Doesn't the shutdown play right into that narrative?

Obviously, Trump doesn't mind when the media and Dems say nasty things about him. He doesn't seem to be embarrassed by anything.

The longer the shutdown goes on and the less the vast majority of the country doesn't notice anything, the better it is for Trump and the GOP. Maybe they're right and we didn't need that much government to begin with.

Sure it's sad that some government employees aren't getting paid right now, but they will get back-pay when the government opens again. They're doing a LOT better than MTs that got laid off.

The only way I see Trump losing is if he caves in and opens the government. As long as he doesn't cave, he's winning. What if the government stays shut down all year? Or until 2020? Would any of us notice? I haven't noticed anything yet. Isn't that a good thing as far as the GOP is concerned?

What am I missing?
