If you don't show up you get a LOT of grief for not showing. I only like a few relatives - the rest I wouldn't hang out with normally if I were to know them elsewhere. I do avoid the family reunion in the summer as that ends up as a drunk fest more than anything - at the Christmas one at least they don't drink and get drunk/stupid so I can handle that aspect better. I go mainly for my dad's sake as it's his family - and while I've told him many times over the years I don't care for how most of them act he gives me "they're family and you need to go" talk that goes on and on and doesn't end. Sometimes you pick your battles in life to a degree and at his age he won't be around much longer and after that I for sure will only see the ones I actually like.
