It's the difference between "Meh, not my problem..." and "Dang! That could have been me!"
In other words, why should I care about California's forestry issues when it doesn't affect me, anyone I know, or anyone I've ever heard about? Show me how it affects me and I care.
Why are people dying and losing their homes? Is this preventable? These are all very valid topics right now because people are looking at the issues.
Why do we only hear about gun control after a mass shooting? That's when people care.
