Consider that teacher's jobs are not only at school. - Furthermore. sm

Some teachers are leaving the profession because they can not afford to live in the affluent areas where rent or home ownership is just too much for what they make. I have 2 daughters who teach in separate areas. One cannot afford to teach in the county schools any longer because the cost of housing has gone up so much and the pay has not kept up. The other lives in a more rural county and while the pay and living is not bad, the school does not have enough funding. She is a special ed teacher and they take much of that funding and put it elsewhere in the school. She has to pay for supplies for the kids. She is responsible for their IEP's, county meetings, testing etc. All of this takes numerous hours, especially when your case load is twice what should be expected from one teacher. AND this is done on HER time, not during school hours. They are even hiring part-time teachers in the same department, having them do the processes above ON THEIR OWN TIME to avoid benefits, pay for holidays, Christmas break etc. These teachers are also leaving because the jobs are not really part time. They want full time work for part time pay.

People do not realize how much time teachers put in besides in the class room. They county requires much as far as testing scores, SOL's etc. but there is not enough funding for books or supplies. They have annual employee evaluations but no pay raises, and the cost of their insurance continues rise so their incomes actually reduce, like ours. You all know, if it were possible, we would do the same thing. They are in a position to have their voices heard. More power to them.
