Saying goodbye to our dog

Posted: Jun 7, 2012

Our dog Frosty suffered from metastatic prostate cancer.  We had to say goodbye to him last night and had him put down.  This is the first time we have ever gone through this and it's hard and very sad.  Please say a prayer for our family.

Very sad - prayers for you

I have had to have a few dogs put down in my life and it is a very hard thing to do. My current dog is my best buddy and I dread the day I have to have him put down. I get tears just thinking about it. Again, my prayers are with you and we all know this is part of having a pet, but it does not make it any easier. Just remember the wonderful times with Frosty and know that Frosty is not suffering.

So sorry about Frosty! - Thinking of you & your family

That is such a hard thing to have to do. I know you loved Frosty and gave him a good home. Just remember all the good times with him. Don't know if you've ever read the Rainbow Bridge, but it is always comforting to me:

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

It is never easy to say goodbye. - mom2huskies

I am so sorry about your loss. Pets are a part of the family. It is never easy to say goodbye but at least you know they are no longer in pain. You did the right thing by not letting Frosty suffer.

I just went through a loss of a member of my family. My Tahoe was 16 years old and I loved him dearly. I was going to put Tahoe to sleep but he passed before I could take him to the vet. It was hard but at least I was able to hold him and tell him it was okay to go.

I am sure Frosty and Tahoe are now playing and running at the Rainbow Bridge.

Your family is in my prayers and with time it will get easier.

Frosty/So sorry for you - Christine

Your post takes me back some years when our beloved Scottish Terrier, Angus was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. So far we have lost four dogs over many years, and it is a very painful thing to go through. My heart goes out to you. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of our dogs. They are so very special, each in his or her own way, and each one touched our hearts. Cherish your memories of the time you had with Frosty, Knowing he was loved and cared for helps to ease the pain.

So sorry about Frosty - Nik

Ending the suffering of a loved pet is the ultimate expression of your bond. The knowledge you did the right thing doesn't make the pain any easier, so please know that many of us know have been through this difficult time and will be saying a prayer for you and your family. I never thought I would get over putting my dog to sleep (it's been 10 years now), and it might be a cliche, but the passage of time does help. Hang in there.

I just need to get this out now.  I have been hurting, and I just need to put in print.
