Goodbye, Reggie

Posted: Aug 31, 2014

I just need to get this out now.  I have been hurting, and I just need to put in print.

Reggie (Regina) was my niece's Australian Cattle Dog.  She was diagnosed with cancer a few years back.  My niece and her husband immediately made the decision to drive her to Philadelphia (about a four-hour round trip) every Saturday for chemotherapy.

Some months back she was diagnosed with canine Cushing's.  Her kidneys were failing, but again she was taken to the vet for infusion of fluids on a regular basis.  Everything possible was done to give her a better quality of life.  She was enjoying life up until quite recently,  Thursday she was taken to be put down at age 14.  She was a joy to our family, and Christmas will never be the same without her jumping for her stocking above the fireplace, and playing the rest of the day with her new toys.

I remember when my niece brought her home.  Within two days she learned to ring a bell by the door when she wanted to go out.

I just needed to pay tribute to her now before I go to bed.  She truly was a wonderful girl.

We all love you so much, Reg.

I understand the depths of love one can have for a dog. I'm sorry for your loss. It's said dogs don't have souls and, thus, don't go to heaven. How can heaven be heaven without dogs? I choose to believe dogs (and other pets) will be heaven waiting for us. Hugs to you and your family.

RIP Reggie - as well

all beings that breathe have souls. We will see our beloved pets again on the other side. Animals were not just put here for the human race to abuse. We are their caretakers. We are here to teach them the way the good Lord is here to teach us. They have feelings and emotions just as humans do. They feel love and they feel pain. I believe that with all of my heart.

Run Free at the Bridge, - Angel Reggie!

I believe we will see all of our beloved pets again someday.
"Rainbow Bridge"
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

too and I can't imagine life without her. We have a Queensland Heeler. Reggie lived 14 years...that's a good life span for her and it seems everything was done possible so she could live that long. I'm sure she will be greatly missed. Again, I am so so sorry.

you are amazing, too! - justme4

What a lucky dog Reggie was, indeed, to have such loving humans throughout her entire life!

There is much comfort in that - Christine

It is true that Reggie had a wonderful life, and she knew she was loved. She was always the center of attention. I guess that's what gets us through times like this. It really helps to know the years we had with her were wonderful. Thank you so much.

I'm so glad Reggie was well loved - Val

She truly was loved and cherished by our entire family. She was a dear and devoted friend, a protector of her home and the people in it. The herding instinct in Reg was really amazing to watch. She would circle the swimming pool trying to "herd" everyone to one side. She was a red ACD, and very beautiful. She will be in my heart forever.

I really appreciate all of you, and I thank you for your kindness. I pray one day we will be reunited with our beloved pets. Thank you again.
