Amid public distrust, “the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and hence facilitate some redistribution? — because I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level to make to make sure everybody has got a shot,” Obama told a Loyola University audience in October 1998. Surprised

So, what do think Medicare is, or Medicaid, or welfare, food stamps, OUR MILITARY, FDIC, roads, bridges...anything that takes all of us to do. All of these are the product of COLLECTIVE input and redistribution. If you really think about it, that's kind of the whole point of govt.

The military is the most socialist institution in this country - Fanatical Hypocrite

[ In Reply To ..]
They are a government institution founded for the "greater good" and maintained entirely with taxpayer money. Once you become a member of the military, you can't leave and you have to do what they tell you to do. They decide what your occupation will be, where you live, who you live with, who you can and can't associate with, even when you sleep and eat. If you refuse, you will be imprisoned. When your contract is up, they can decide to keep you. You can get pension, health care, education and housing. So, fight socialism today and hate our troops.

Or you can accept the fact that just because something has basic socialist concepts within it, does not make it socialist. When we have gulags and collective farms in America, start complaining. When the government hands someone a check for a lifetime of hard work or gives them a break in their medical bills, just move on.

I'm made of carbon, so is a tree, no one has ever confused me with a tree or vice versa. Things can have similarities and yet be nothing alike.

Exactly the point...sm - JTBB

[ In Reply To ..]
not only that, we are socialist down to the core. Lets take the family unit. When your mother gets old and can't keep up with stuff, what do you do? Do you just tell her "too bad...you should've done better" or do you do like I do and take her into the family and let her do what she can so she can benefit from the work of all? Mine helps with gardening until she gets tired. Then she tells me how to do it for the 1,000,000,0000th time...lol. If that's not enough socialism for you, then check out my neighbors who all work together as a community (its a gardening extravaganza but nobody goes hungry). These are the princples this country was founded on.
big difference - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
Big difference between socialism and being social. Same as there is a big difference between a community and a commune. America is the most charitable nation on earth. We are the first to help out with our money, our time, and our resources when anyone needs help. That's what makes us great. But it's not the government's job to do that. I think it's fine if they will help to a point... a hand up, not a hand out. Teach me to fish so I can support myself. But I don't want the government taking my hard-earned cash and giving it to someone who doesn't want to work.

As for taking care of your mother... are you kidding? She EARNED that. How much thru her life did she sacrifice and do for you? It is your privilege to return the favor.

As for the military... now that IS the government's job... to protect us from enemies. The military must be regimented and trained. They have to work as a team and they have to be able to count on each other. They are only as strong as their weakest link, so they can't afford to have any weak links. And for the sacrifice they have made to protect MY freedom, they deserve a good health plan, retirement plan, etc. I am more than happy to help pay for that.

I hope you and your mom enjoy your garden! :)
It seems to me you are...sm - JTBB

(and by you I mean folks with that line of thinking) are only willing to help someone so long as it benefits you. You want a strong military and are willing to pay for that out of fear for yourself. Not everyone on welfare wants to be there, in fact, an overwhelming majority don't want to be there. I think the whole problem behind this thinking is fear of giving something and not getting something in return.

As far as MY mother. No..she didn't earn anything. She dumped me at my widowed grandmother's when I was 2 along with 3 siblings, and I didn't really get to know her until recently. The only reason I know her now is because she needed a place to go. I'm 48 now, and I really don't even think of her as my mother. However, I do the same for the folks in my community, as do my neighbors. When we get through with our gardening activities, and we all have enough food frozen, canned, dried, and whatever else we decide to try (lol), we take the rest to the homeless shelters here in town. We don't expect anything in return other than the satisfaction of knowing we did something to help someone, and glad we could.

I totally understand the "hand up -- not hand out" thing. However, not everyone is in a position where they can just go get a job. They have kids, medical problems, mental problems, housing problems...all kinds of different problems. So who are we to say that one is worthy and another is not? You don't know if someone is willing to try until you trust them and give them the opportunity. And I mean a real opportunity with programs to help with education, working skills, people skills, budget management, child care, etc. Right now welfare isn't a hand up. Its just enough to get them by until the next check comes, and with limited other opportunities, they will be forced whether by circumstance or by finances to sit and wait for that next check.

Okay...afterschool special is over. I'm goin back to my mean ol athiest self now....lol.

Our military, unlike many other countries, is still 100% voluntary.

Then you unobservant to social programs available:: - all over the country for the poor

Funny, that's basically the central point of my post - Fanatical Hypocrite

Social programs are indispensable to protect the poor.

Also, you sure are clueless about geography. Libya and Tunisia are in Africa. It's like saying "Where do you live, Georgia, Florida, America?"

The clueless shouldn't throw stones. They don't have the prerequisite understanding of trajectory and velocity to make those sorts of judgments.

Wow, that's kind of scary, but why not - Fanatical Hypocrite

It would end wars real quick if every man, woman and particularly hyperactive child served in the war:) Seriously, though, do you think women should go too? I think they should. I think if we are going to have a draft, it should be of every able-bodied person in the country. Everyone goes or we all stay home and let the enemy stew on the fact that they haven't invented the plane or boat, so they can't get here.

Unfortunately, I can't go to war. I have a genuine medical condition where I have bladder and bowel incontinence when shot at.

I never heard him mention Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, good stamps, military, roads, bridges, police, fire, etc. on the tape. Of course, any civil society has to fund those institutions, no one is arguing that fact. But this is not about roads and bridges. This is Obama's ideology front and center. This is the govt taking money from the haves and deciding which of the have-nots will receive it and how he plans to do it. Huge difference.

Taxation is not redistribution of wealth - Fanatical Hypocrite

[ In Reply To ..]
While I understand your fear of socialism, which is a deeply flawed ideology, especially in its classic Soviet-style oligarchic, closed market form, I think there is a fundamental understanding in America of how one transforms a country from a lawless plutocracy into a socialist monarchy. It isn't so easy as its been made out to be.

The redistribution of wealth in this case is taxation. Taxation is something that every country in the world does. A 3% raise in income tax such as letting the previous tax cuts expire is not in fact socialism. It is certainly debatable as to what tax percentage for any given household would be unfair, but the assertion that taxation equals socialism is unfair.

Obama has proven himself to be a staunchly capitalist and federalist. Now federalism is a mixed bag and certainly there's room to debate how much is too much government. Anarchy is bad, tyranny is bad. However, he is not socialist. Forcing you to purchase the defective product of a highly lobbied industry like health insurance is not socialist. In fact, it's one of the more capitalist things your country can make you do.

As for the haves. The haves exist because of the have-nots who worked for them and made them rich. I understand that everyone wants to be rich one day and then they don't want to pay a high tax, but it's not going to happen no matter how hard you work, because hard work, ingenuity and intelligence usually does not result in fortune. Nor will the haves be destroyed by a 3% tax. Not even a 10% tax will result in their starvation or homelessness. In fact, if the top 1% paid 90% tax, they'd still be doing alright (I am not suggesting a 90% tax, just in case there is a misunderstanding, only pointing out how rich the rich are compared to the average hard working American).

Now, if you can cite an example where Obama actually took money from one person and gave that money to another person, I will agree that that is socialist ideology. The use of taxation to re-distribute the wealth to projects, social programs and government institutions, however, is the very point of taxation.
my conclusion - bitterclinger
[ In Reply To ..]
I have come to the conclusion that with these stateements:
"Obama has proven himself to be a staunchly capitalist and federalist...Forcing you to purchase the defective product of a highly lobbied industry like health insurance is not socialist. In fact, it's one of the more capitalist things your country can make you do" put us on opposite ends of the spectrum, so to speak and we will never reach agreement. I do, however, appreciate an intelligent debate with any liberal. :-) It's so much nicer than all the recent name-calling that was going on this board - on both sides.

Here are a few examples of our hard-earned tax money. I would MUCH prefer my tax money help people pull themselves out of poverty rather than studying a monkey's response to inequity.

- $762,372 to create “Dance Draw” interactive dance software

- $1.9 million for international ant research

- $1.8 million for a road project that is threatening a pastor’s home

- $308 million for a joint clean energy venture with…BP

- $89,298 to replace a new sidewalk that leads to a ditch in Boynton, OK

- $200,000 to help Siberian communities lobby Russian policy makers

- $760,000 to Georgia Tech to study improvised music

- $700,000 to study why monkeys respond negatively to inequity

- $193,956 to study voter perceptions of the economic stimulus

- $363,760 to help NIH promote the positive impacts of stimulus projects

- $456,663 to study the circulation of Neptune’s atmosphere

I certainly wish there was more reasoned debate too - Fanatical Hypocrite
[ In Reply To ..]
It's very refreshing to not have random insults flung at me... I'm not sure how to respond anymore... ;)

As for the stupid expenditures, I agree with you. There is way too much of that. Though it's funny how our personal interests can influence things. I'm quite fond of science and astrophysics, so studying the circulation of Neptune's atmosphere sounds very fascinating to me and they can use my whole check to the IRS on that.

Sidewalks to ditches and dance software sounds like a waste of time, though maybe that ditch is a particularly beautiful tourist site (I'm not sure if Boynton has anything else to see...)

Yeah, the name-calling from both sides has gotten out of hand. I only fling insults when I see someone insulting someone else's posts for no good reason. It's unfortunate that people just assume that if the other person has a different opinion that they are completely ignorant and hate America. I'm human and fallible, so there's a decent chance I'm wrong. I try to remember that.

You have to admit it is kind of funny though. Republicans hate Democrats because they got what they wanted (socialist monarchy). Democrats hate Republicans because they got what they wanted (theocratic capitalism). And the grand irony is no one got what they wanted and neither wanted the things the other thought they did. We're jealous of what the other guy doesn't even have.

Little Red Hen 2012

"Who will help me plant my wheat?" asked the little red hen.

"Not I," said the cow.

"Not I," said the duck.

"Not I," said the pig.

"Not I," said the goose.

"Then I will do it by myself." She planted her crop and the wheat grew
and ripened.

"Who will help me reap my wheat?" asked the little red hen.

"Not I," said the duck.

"Out of my classification," said the pig.

"I'd lose my seniority," said the cow.

"I'd lose my unemployment compensation," said the goose.

"Then I will do it by myself," said the little red hen, and so she did.

"Who will help me bake the bread?" asked the little red hen.

"That would be overtime for me," said the cow.

"I'd lose my welfare benefits," said the duck.

"I'm a dropout and never learned how," said the pig.

"If I'm to be the only helper, that's discrimination," said the goose.

"Then I will do it by myself," said the little red hen.

She baked five loaves and held them up for all of her neighbors to see.
They wanted some and, in fact, demanded a share but the little red hen
said, "No, I shall eat all five loaves."

"Excess profits!" cried the cow.. (Nancy Pelosi)

"Capitalist leech!" screamed the duck. (Barbara Boxer)

"I demand equal rights!" yelled the goose. (Jesse Jackson)

The pig just grunted in disdain.. (Harry Reid)

And they all painted 'Unfair!' picket signs and marched around and around
the little red hen, shouting obscenities.

When the farmer (Obama) came he said to the little red hen, "You must not
be so greedy."

"But I earned the bread," said the little red hen.

"Exactly," said Barack the farmer. "That is what makes our free enterprise
system so wonderful. Anyone in the barnyard can earn as much as he wants.
But under our modern government regulations, the productive workers must
divide the fruits of their labor with those who are lazy and idle."

And they all lived happily ever after, including the little red hen, who
smiled and clucked, "I am grateful, for now I truly understand."

But her neighbors became quite disappointed in her. She never again baked
bread because she joined the 'party' and got her bread free. And all the
Democrats smiled. 'Fairness' had been established.

Individual initiative had died but nobody noticed; perhaps no one cared so
long as there was free bread that 'the rich' were paying for.

And perhaps....this is the end...................

And the next week, there was no bread, or anything else to eat. So, they
all starved equally.

Never saw this before but sure explains it in terms:: - You would think a Liberal could understand

"Who will help us build these roads, bridges, and runways?" asked the people.

"We will," said the government of, for, and by the people.

âWho will help us keep the traffic orderly in the skies and on our roads?â asked the people.

âWe will,â said the government of, by, and for the people.

"Who will help us teach our children?" asked the people.

"We will," said we the government of, by, and for the people.

âWho will help us drill for all this oil in this great land of ours?â asked the American petroleum companies.

âWe will,â said the government of, by, and for the people. We will subsidize your venture since the cost will be too great for you. We as a nation will pay for this and we all benefit from this endeavor.

âWho will help us get our businesses off the ground?â asked the struggling entrepreneurs who werenât born with silver spoons in their mouths.

âWe will,â said the government of, by, and for the people. We will give you a loan at a lower interest rate than the banks will so that you can get your business going and hire your fellow citizens and get this economy moving.

âWho will ensure that the water we drink and the food we eat are safe?â asked the people.

âWe will,â said the government of, by, and for the people; because without safe water to drink, you many not live long enough to start a business.

Who will help us pay for the research and development of innovative ideas that help to create things like the internet, discover medical cures, support scientific discoveries and technologies that continue to advance this society as a whole?

âWe will,â said the government of, for, and by the people; because we will all benefit from these advances.

So everyone agreed and said, "Great, weâll all work together to advance this great society. We will have teachers teaching our children who will grow up to become scientists, doctors, nurses, teachers, astronauts, entrepreneurs, etc. We will have police and fire departments protecting our lives and property; military protecting our land, runways and roads helping to move our products and sell our wares.

So we all worked together to build this great nation for all of us to enjoy the fruits of our collective labors. (Except for the 300 years when some people were forced to work without pay and were not allowed to reap any of the benefits until they fought to change that unjust system)

All went well for a time until the greedy capitalists realized there really is no limit to the money they can earn and keep to themselves, especially if they can rig the system to their benefit and the detriment of all others. So they started paying politicians to enact laws to protect their earnings from taxation and also to make it easier for them to pay slave wages to workers in countries with oppressive governments. They then started lying to the citizens so that middle income people would think that poor people were the cause of all their problems. That way everyone will be so consumed with their anger and hatred toward each other that they wouldnât notice the real perpetrators of the heist taking place right before their eyes.

Then the fair-minded Democrats said to the greedy capitalists, "You must not be so greedy. You must stop avoiding your tax responsibility and you must stop shipping jobs overseas because when you do that, you prevent your fellow citizens from working and being able to contribute.â And you billion dollar oil companies donât need government welfare any longer. If we are going to be a civilized society, we must provide help to those who actually need it so that they can be given an opportunity to become productive citizens too.

But NO!... âI built this,â said the greedy capitalist leeches; âI no longer need your help and I donât owe this nation anything.â âI shall take all my loaves and put them in a bread basket in Sweden and the Cayman Islands rather than reinvest in this nationâs future.

"No, you did not do that by yourself" said the Democrats. "What makes our free enterprise system so wonderful is that we all do our parts no matter how small. And you must understand, too, the majority of us donât have rich parents to pay for our higher education or our business startup funds. You greedy, selfish capitalist leeches should stop looking down your noses at hard working Americans. These hard working Americans should not be ridiculed and left out of the free enterprise system just because of their unfortunate circumstances in life. And because we Democrats have not lost site of that reality, we insist that we all continue with our collective efforts and continue reinvesting in this society for the greater good of all of us. Our system can't work any other way.

And with the level heads of the Democrats, we all lived happily ever after, including the greedy capitalists because they finally realized they didnât need pure gold faucets, 2 mansions, multiple vacation homes, 10 cars, and 2 yachts if it meant 99% of the country will starve because of their greed.

The End

So? Redistribution is what gave us the middle class. We've - been in this mess before, and a nice 90%

[ In Reply To ..]
top tax bracket replaced a predominantly impoverished populace ruled over by an ultra-wealthy exploiting class with less-wealthy upper classes and the middle class we all here once belonged to.

This was until we (us!--our generation) so irresponsibly allowed over half of our national wealth to be social engineered into the hands of 1% of 1% of our population.

The number of us in poverty has soared--again.
Middle class survivor incomes are dropping.
Our democracy has been largely taken over by a ruling class that buys congressmen with their chump change.
And it is all our fault for allowing it.

I want the New Deal back and with it some of the heavy-duty re-redistribution that worked so well for our country before. President Obama's practically a right winger compared to me in that respect.
