On mark levine and today on Rush - heard Rush doing some last week also. They both spent extended periods of time reading quotes from some 100+ year old book by some French guy - Alex Tocqueville or something who came to America for a few weeks and then wrote a book about what he thought of us. Since when do AMERICANS need the opinion of some French man? remember freedom fries???? The guy has been dead forever. no consistency with these speakers at all.

Today's tripe: Rush said he doesnt need those sponsors he lost. He has to turn away advertisers all the time because they love him so. He then went onto to say that Obama keeps a written enemies list. He said when the enemy - a private citizen no less - dared to speak in public, Obama's people called them vile names. No irony in his voice at ALL.

He wrote a wonderful book called "Democracy in America," which really isn't his opinion about America, but a sociological and political study meant for the French people - he wanted them to learn from us in creating a more free society. It's a book definitly worth the read if you have the time.

He also had particularly good insight -

"But one also finds in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to want to bring the strong down to their level, and which reduces men to preferring equality in servitude to inequality in freedom."

Just read this quote and think about it for a few minutes and keep in mind it had nothing to do with slavery.

Will not waste my time reading a book dug up by right wingers who found a passage or 2 they thought backed their view up. I also do not carry a copy of the constitution in my vest pocket. It may or may not be a good book; it is one man's opinion of a foreigh country a century or so ago. Don't inflate it to biblical proportions because Rush and Levine read it to their listeners.

I'm simply someone interested in history, making a reading suggestion, nothing to do with right or left. Of course, you're free to take it or leave it. There are many books written by foreigners about our country that are really interesting.

I recommend "The Making of the President", 1960, written by Theodore White, JFK vs Nixon. I once had a copy but it has long been out of print. I saw it recommended by someone on the news this morning. Apparently it is being reissued. Imagine a campaign back then before the internet, the first campaign with a TV debate, before cable TV , no cell phones or IPads?

Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to check into that. My cousin lives close to a shop that specializes in very hard to get books. Unfortunately, they are usually very expensive. Nice to see a post of substance and content. We need more like you. :) Keep posting.

Never used a Kindle but a family member has something similar and loves it. They have an eye problem and apparently can adjust the size of the font quickly. I prefer the idea of book myself because I can easily mark passages, etc., that I want to go back and reread or refer to. Please let me know what you think of the book. I read voraciously, more political pieces than anything else including bios of politicians, history books, etc.

Pretty much sums it up, and I think it is a great quote. People's circumstances are never going to be equal or the same because not every single person wants exactly the same things. Nor are there a lot that are will to work for what they want. Simple concept to grasp. You will always have the takers and the givers, but givers are now disgusted with constantly being demonized by this president. Instead of criticizing me for work my ethic and penalizing me endlessly through taxes, how about Obama teaching others my work ethic. Sure don't see Obama and his cronies giving away all their "stuff" to reduce his/their level of living.

The words on the base of the Statue of Liberty come from the last five lines of a poem titled "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus. It reads, "Give me your tired, your poor/ Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free/The wretched refuse of your teeming shore/Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me/I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Had a history teacher in college that was obsessed with the Statue of Liberty and actually made us memorize the entire poem - guess it only feels like I've forgotten everything :)

It requires the consent of Congress, remember? The tax hikes that have been passed (by BOTH parties in Congress) since 2009 are listed below. Of note, the OP was correct to say Obama does not wnt to raise taxes on lower and middle class incomes. I too know who is on my side and will be voting accordingly.

Already in effect

• Federal excise tax on tobacco.
• A 10 percent excise tax on indoor tanning services. No wonder Boehner’s panties are in such a bunch.
• Eliminated 6 exemptions and credits on internatonal corps/conglomerates, a scheme to restrict or eliminate offshore tax shelters.
• Industry-specific fee on manufacturers and importers of brand name drugs, a Paygo measure to fund HCR.

To take effect Jan 2013:

• Increase in hospital insurance portion of the payroll tax from 2.9 percent to 3.8 percent for couples earning more than $250,000 a year, or $200,000 for single filers.
• Applying the 3.8 percent hospital insurance tax to investment income for couples earning more than $250,000 a year, or $200,000 for single filers, for the first time.
• A 2.3 percent excise tax on manufacturers and importers of certain medical devices. Narrow target tax.
• Raise the 7.5 percent adjusted gross income floor for the medical expenses deduction to 10 percent. HCR paygo.
• Annual fee levied on health insurance providers, based on each company’s share of the total market. Same logic as the levy on branded drug companies cited above.
• Limiting the amount taxpayers can deposit in flexible spending accounts to $2,500 a year to stem FSA tax dodging abuse.
• Eliminating the corporate deduction on a 28% subsidy they receive for for prescription expenses for retirees to correct a “double dip” structure.
• Increasing taxes on health insurance companies by capping the amount of compensation paid to certain employees that they can deduct from their taxes. Narrow target tax hike on health care executives.

To take effect January 2018

• A 40 percent excise tax on employer-provided "Cadillac" health insurance plans costing more than $10,200 for individuals and $27,500 for families.

Try dropping the condescending attitude and your point goes further "remember". Pretty clear people know it is the wishes of Obama to increase taxes, regardless of what he says, based on Obama's actions and congressional steering. Obama has not seen a tax yet that he did not embrace and make love to.
