Why are convicted felons and repeat offenders rewarded with billions in

Posted: Nov 19, 2012

Why aren't conservatives outraged over the deaths of 15 Texas City BP refinery workers, another 11 in the Gulf of Mexico, and the environmental catastrophe in Alaska's oil patch, long since forgotten by now....all due to willful gross corporate negligence? Don't they realize taxpayers are on the hook over the next 5 years for the record 4 billion in fines and penalties that BP will be paying out of proceeds from only ONE measly defense contract, by no means their only US defense contract award? Why are these polluting ecoterrorists and premeditated murderers STILL eligible to bid on them? It's beyond insane. ;

taxpayers are not on the hook for the $4 billion fine - nm

Whom do you suppose provides revenues that bankroll - US GOVERNMENT defense contracts?

[ In Reply To ..]
The 4 billion will be paid for by only one of many BP currently has. God knows how many more they will be awarded in the next five years since their so-called punishment does not include exclusion from future awards.

I heard this morning - RC

on NPR that the fines are not finished. There's still a possibility of up to $21 billion under the Clean Water Act.

It just irks me that BP can continue to bid. - The way it stands now, the only

really palpable future deterrent for such neglect can only come from Wall Street, since government partisans are unwilling to entertain the notion of more stringent health, safety and environmental standards and enforcement, block funding for the inevitable staged extinction of the petrosaurs and concurrent evolution of sustainable energy sources and have no problem promoting increases in defense spending that feeds the BP beast, among others.

Wall Street does not do deterrents to industry - sm

it's hard to understand where you are coming from. You are complaining about enforcement, yet fines to BP are the largest in history. Wall Street is about shareholders; thus, as BP is publicly traded, you won't see deterrents from Wall Street. Meanwhile, I see no "inevitable staged extinction of the petrosaurs". I wish I did.
Precisely the point. - We hold these truths to be self evident

Did not think it needed to be spelled out any further. Perhaps I should have added, "....like THAT'S ever going to happen" after the statement about Wall Street. The biggest punitive damages in US history are NOT going to amount to a hill of beans and will deter nothing in the future as long as they keep getting taxpayer-funded US defense contracts handed to them on a silver platter. The judgment did NOT exempt them from competing for those contracts. Those exemptions should be progressively steep with each offense with a 3-strike policy just like criminal enforcement and punishment applications. Were that the case, BP would be serving a lifetime sentence by now.

1) If you live/work in a war zone (ghetto, drug lair, whatever you might call it), except to be attacked, possibly shot by either side. You're living where people are expected to be criminals. 2) If you are up against someone with a gun, regardless of which side they're on, it would be wise to be quiet, humble, keep your mouth shut and do whatever they tell you. Charges can be filed later against the police officer, security officer, etc., after the heat of the moment is over. 3) If ...

BO Sets Another Record Commuting More Felons' Sentences Oct 06, 2016
Hundreds and hundreds of them - and 22% of them used guns in their crimes. Commuting sentences isn't something that Presidents have typically done willy-nilly, or in such numbers. Someone last year said "Thank God he only has one more year." I took no comfort in that. I knew that, as bad as the first 7 years of this rogue President's term have been, the last year would be the very worst because there would be literally nothing to stop him from doing whatever he wants to do. ...

The attorney who convicted him now opposes the death penalty (although it would have been no better for him to have convicted and served time for a crime he did not commit). Perhaps changes in the system where attorneys (particularly prosecuting attorneys) are not chalking up victories to further careers and th ...

PA Attorney General Convicted Of Perjury, Criminal Aug 20, 2016
Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane resigned this week after a jury found her guilty of perjury, criminal conspiracy, and several other criminal charges relating to the abuse of her position. Gun owners will take particular interest in this conviction, as during her tenure as AG Kane repeatedly demonstrated a marked hostility to the rights of Pennsylvanians, evidently while displaying a personal disregard for the laws she was tasked to uphold. Kane’s criminal conviction was the ...

Most of the workers receive no pay. In the cases when a worker does receive compensation, it is only a few cents for every dollar given to the North Korean government. The government forces tens of thousands of its citizens to work abroad in this program, and the numbers are increasing. China and Russia hire the major ...
