That Star-Spangled Banner knocked me out

Posted: Jan 21, 2013

I didn't know Beyonce could sing so incredibly well. Surprised

I was fortunate enough to catch the Inauguration at the gym...it was lovely (though it looked very cold there!), and the speeches were great.  The choir was amazing.  I was so proud to see our President mention "our gay brothers and sisters," right along with civil rights movements for minorities and women.  It is a beautiful day, and I am so proud to be an American!

;

I am also proud to be an American - today...

and no, I'm NOT an Obamabot. I don't agree with a lot of stuff he did or did not do during his first term, but am still sending best wishes to the prez and his family and our country.

For me, it was the inaugural poet, Richard Blanco, - and his stunning talent.

"One Today"

One sun rose on us today, kindled over our shores,
peeking over the Smokies, greeting the faces
of the Great Lakes, spreading a simple truth
across the Great Plains, then charging across the Rockies.
One light, waking up rooftops, under each one, a story
told by our silent gestures moving behind windows.

My face, your face, millions of faces in morning’s mirrors,
each one yawning to life, crescendoing into our day:
pencil-yellow school buses, the rhythm of traffic lights,
fruit stands: apples, limes, and oranges arrayed like rainbows
begging our praise. Silver trucks heavy with oil or paper -- bricks or milk, teeming over highways alongside us,
on our way to clean tables, read ledgers, or save lives -- to teach geometry, or ring up groceries as my mother did
for twenty years, so I could write this poem.

All of us as vital as the one light we move through,
the same light on blackboards with lessons for the day:
equations to solve, history to question, or atoms imagined,
the “I have a dream” we keep dreaming,
or the impossible vocabulary of sorrow that won’t explain
the empty desks of twenty children marked absent
today, and forever. Many prayers, but one light
breathing color into stained glass windows,
life into the faces of bronze statues, warmth
onto the steps of our museums and park benches
as mothers watch children slide into the day.

One ground. Our ground, rooting us to every stalk
of corn, every head of wheat sown by sweat
and hands, hands gleaning coal or planting windmills
in deserts and hilltops that keep us warm, hands
digging trenches, routing pipes and cables, hands
as worn as my father’s cutting sugarcane
so my brother and I could have books and shoes.

The dust of farms and deserts, cities and plains
mingled by one wind -- our breath. Breathe. Hear it
through the day’s gorgeous din of honking cabs,
buses launching down avenues, the symphony
of footsteps, guitars, and screeching subways,
the unexpected song bird on your clothes line.

Hear: squeaky playground swings, trains whistling,
or whispers across cafe tables, Hear: the doors we open
for each other all day, saying: hello, shalom,
buon giorno, howdy, namaste, or buenos días
in the language my mother taught me -- in every language
spoken into one wind carrying our lives
without prejudice, as these words break from my lips.

One sky: since the Appalachians and Sierras claimed
their majesty, and the Mississippi and Colorado worked
their way to the sea. Thank the work of our hands:
weaving steel into bridges, finishing one more report
for the boss on time, stitching another wound
or uniform, the first brush stroke on a portrait,
or the last floor on the Freedom Tower
jutting into a sky that yields to our resilience.

One sky, toward which we sometimes lift our eyes
tired from work: some days guessing at the weather
of our lives, some days giving thanks for a love
that loves you back, sometimes praising a mother
who knew how to give, or forgiving a father
who couldn’t give what you wanted.

We head home: through the gloss of rain or weight
of snow, or the plum blush of dusk, but always -- home,
always under one sky, our sky. And always one moon
like a silent drum tapping on every rooftop
and every window, of one country -- all of us --
facing the stars
hope -- a new constellation
waiting for us to map it,
waiting for us to name it -- together

Facing the stars, hope--a new constellation - Lovely!. :) nm

I was at the grocery store at that point and listening on my ipod, but halfway through the poem, I hit Nosignalville and had to listen to static through part of it.

Thank you for posting the entire poem. It's nice to read what I missed hearing!

Once again people watched from around the planet, - from every nation that allowed. nm

Get All Misty-eyed Over Star Spangled BannerNov 05, 2012
We can recite the Pledge of Allegiance from memory, send our young people to war, defend the Constitution, declare a special day for Veterans, shine up our flag pins, and then turn around and suppress people voting in Florida and Ohio? Can someone explain this to me?  Perferably a declared Republican? My entire growing up years I recall being told that it was my civic duty to vote, no matter who I voted for.  I have voted in every election I was able to.   I cannot believe ...

Wow, Knocked Triglycerides WAY Down...Dec 13, 2011
I finally have somethat that is working.  Tried 8 different statins and such drugs, several OTC ones, Rx-strength niacin and still could not get my trgly's down (was allergic or intolerant to many).  I have been on my new supplement, PROFIBE, developed at the University of Florida for 5 weeks and my trgly of 405 came down to 245 -- in only FIVE weeks--and not even at the full recommended dose.  So if you have that issue or know of anyone that does, its totally natural (citrus ...

Nov 2011 Elections Banner Results For Progressives InNov 09, 2011
Not too shabby.  MI - Over-reaching personhood measure rejected 58% to 42%.  A similar agenda was rejected in Colorado in 2008 and again in 2010.  OH - Senate Bill 5 referendum soundly reversed Kasich's anti-union efforts 63% to 37%.  Impressive numbers. KY - Steve Beshear scored a 60%-30%-%10 margin over GOP and independent opponents.  Dems also won in Secretary of State, Treasurer and Auditor races.  Evidently, Palin's endorsement of the GOP contender ...

Palin Star Power Must Be Aug 13, 2012
She's so busy, she'll be an RNC no-show, not willing to take a chance on being upstaged by Christie, Trump, Ryan and other party media magnets.  I think she made a wide choice when realizing she still has what it takes to draw in smaller-venue local crowds that are not typically of interest to lamestream media or cable reporters outside Fox and Friends circles.  How relieved she must be to have finally found her niche.     ...

The Democrats' Rising Star. A Look At The RadicalJul 29, 2017
As House and Senate Democrats press forward with their quest to destroy Donald Trump's presidency by any means necessary, they are simultaneously focused on finding someone in their ranks who could be an effective presidential candidate for their own party in 2020. Fifty-three-year-old Kamala Harris, who served as the Attorney General of California from 2011-16 and then filled the vacant U.S. Senate seat that had been occupied for a quarter-century by Barbara Boxer, is someone whom they wil ...

4-Star Generals Endorse Hillary ClintonSep 04, 2016
Although both Gens. David Maddox and Bob Sennewald say they have never endorsed a political candidate before, they both felt compelled to speak out this election cycle. "Our votes have always been private, and neither of us has ever previously lent his name or voice to a presidential candidate. Having studied what is at stake for this country and the alternatives we have now, we see only one viable leader, and will be voting this November for Secretary Hillary Clinton." See link.   ...
