Patriot Act

Posted: Feb 9, 2011

What are your thoughts/opinions on the Patriot Act?  The extension failed in the House yesterday, but should it be extended or is it unconstitutional?

At its heart, the Patriot Act streamlined communications between varying agencies that worked together to investigate terrorist activities. It also provided for easier and less cumbersome means of investigation and surveillance.

However, the Act provided sweeping power to government agencies to monitor the personal habits of not only those who had been identified as suspected terrorists, but anyone residing in the United States as well as United States citizens residing abroad.

I am sure many Americans feel it is an invasion of privacy and of our freedom and they are right. However, I'm sure many of us, if not all of us, want to prevent another terrorist attack on the United States and the Patriot Act definitely helped keep tabs on suspected terrorists.

I guess the question now is how do we keep track of suspected terrorists without infringing upon the privacy and freedoms of American citizens?

I can see both sides, too, and to be honest... - Kendra

nobody is listening in on my phone conversations. I am not that interesting. I know that when people hear "Patriot Act," it conjures up images of people listening in on what they are saying to whomever on the phone and this huge infringement on personal privacy, but I also understand that what I am saying (along with almost everyone else) is really not something that anyone in our government wants to waste time and resources listening to. I get that people are bothered and I understand, but I really don't care who listens to what I am saying...except maybe my mother or husband on an off day.

lol...feel the same way - sm

I have nothing to hide. I'm not doing anything illegal, etc. Check me out all you want...you are just gonna be bored to tears.

However, what is to stop our government from abusing it? Like checking up on those of us who are registered as a different political party, etc. It could potentially open a big can of worms and seriously infringe upon our freedom and privacy if they started to use it for the wrong reasons.

The part that bothers me the most about this - Zville MT

is that it bypasses judges to write search warrants. The FBI, Homeland Security, whomever, can write thier own search warrants to come in and search your house at any time, for any reason, and you not only can't do anything about it, but you also can't tell anyone about it - not your family, not your lawyer, or even a judge, even if you're under oath. This part is completely unconstitutional and is really just another chip out of our freedoms that we don't seem to notice or are particularly concerned about.

True, who cares if they're listening to your conversation on the phone with your neighbor about how your day was - my conversation would be pretty boring, too - but what if they targeted your house by mistake as a terrorist hideout and came crashing through your door at 4 a.m. - and you had no way to have those responsible for the mix up held accountable. That's pretty scary stuff if you ask me.

A Little History On What Is Now The Patriot ActJun 27, 2013
This law was enacted in 1994. It was expanded in 2006/2007.  For a lot more information, you should look up Chapter 119, title 18 of the U.S. Code.  The second report gives  little more info, which I will post a paragraph or two in a different typestyle so you all don't get confused and starting with the word "background." So, for those bashing Bush for starting electronic survellience, I'm sure you will agree that he was NOT President in 1994-1995 or did I miss so ...

Straight from the horse's mouth:  A former CIA asset.  (Pay careful attention to what she says about 09/11 and OBL's "death.") How many people know what is really in the (Anti) Patriot Act?  Not many... By Andrew McLemoreSaturday, March 27th, 2010 -- 6:25 pm Hatred is getting a lot of press this week as reports of violent harassment against Congressional Democrats continue to surface. Pro-gun ‘patriot Groups’ Plan Dual Rallies In Washington On Disputed April AnniversaApr 06, 2010
By Stephen C. WebsterMonday, April 5th, 2010 -- 8:16 pm Update (at bottom): Pro-gun ads appearing in this report not directly linked to RAW STORY The date April 19 seems to have a strange echo in American history. According to the media, a pro-gun group planning a rally in Washington, D.C. on that day is doing so because it is the anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. While technically correct, that's not half the story. The controversy surrounds two groups: Oath Keepers and Second ...
