My two cents (no, not my last paycheck)

I've been noticing on a few different social media sites that a dialogue has begun.  I've read conversations in which people are beginning to understand opposite sides.  White people and black people are sharing their views, experiences, and they're coming together to understand each other.  Granted, I'm only seeing this on a few sites and I'm praying it's the beginnning of a coming together, of an understanding that most people just want to make it through their lives without drama.  I fully believe we're all capable of relating to one another.  Sure, legislature needs to change.  Black people have a legitimate complaint and we all need to understand this.  At the same time, black people need to understand that the average white person is not racist and is just trying to live his/her life, same as them and in no way trying to "keep them down."  Maybe I'm niave, but I have hope we can come together in understanding and true unity.

That's what the democratic platform is all about. However, it's not just black folk they're trying to keep oppressed. It's the oppressed they're trying to keep oppressed, poor people and/or people in a minority. They need the votes. That's a fact.

My goodness, Newt Gingrich! I could not believe it, but really he made a good point. Giuliani, on the other hand, ugh.

If anyone follows Seth Meyers this is a very good segment, which goes into how there is a consensus being arrived at by very different personalities who are in the media, such as Snoop Dogg and Newt Gingrich (Snoop Gingrich?).

As a conservative myself, I understand that. My point, though, was there is at least a beginning of understanding. I just hope this is at least a start.

anymore. We used to have a common culture, but now people identify as African, Mexican, Asian, etc. first, not American and there is a grievance culture. Movements have been taken over by extremist who hate this country and capitalism. I hate to be so blunt, but I there more polarization is coming.

Still - it's so nice to see a thread on this board being rationally discussed without any insults. That's what makes me hopeful that more and more people can just put away the hate and insults and just talk. There's good and bad on both sides, but if we don't see that we're all Americans and need to come together, it's just going to escalate.

One of the few characteristics that separate human beings from all other mammalian (or reptilian) life forms is that human beings can develop culture that allows us to move beyond (albeit with effort and careful tending) our basic animal desires to survive and pass on our genes. We can do better, and we need to do better not only for minority populations but for our own wellbeing. Human society THRIVES on overcoming baser instincts; we merely survive (and possibly devolve) if we cannot nurture culture and our higher mental selves.

On internet forums, most people are trying to advance a political agenda. They are not looking or solutions.

Ordinary people like us can hold calm discussions and understand one another, but it's the irrational radicals who are going to ignite what's already been simmering. I'm so afraid this summer is going to just explode.
