Is this true?

Posted: Jan 24, 2013

Romney has about $250 million, Kerry has as much as $282 million? Romney has his millions in offshore accounts, while Kerry has his in family trust funds to avoid paying taxes (following the Kennedy family strategy)? Romney worked for his money, Kerry never really had a job? This is floating around in cyberspace. Some sources say it's true, other sources say it's not. Just wondering if it's true. ;

I have heard that this is true, but I can't really (sm) - NM

back it up with a link right now. Is anyone really surprised that Kerry uses loopholes to hide his money? After all, wasn't it his yachts he registered in Connecticut to avoid paying taxes on them? If I find anything later that will suffice as proof I will post it.

From what I understand (and I may be wrong...) - ZvilleMT

It's really his wife's family money. I don't know how much John Kerry by himself has, but his wife has a bunch and yes, it is in family trust funds. Now, whether they keep their money together or separate, I don't really know, so I have no idea what the tax situation is.

Kerry's wife does have her own wealth, - sm

but Kerry has his own, too.

Found this:

"The richest? That would be Sen. John Kerry, (D-Mass.), who tops the list for the second year with a minimum net worth of $186.6 million, a boost of about $20 million from 2008, with much of it credited to his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry."

Here's a link about divesting when/if - confirmed

I thought most of his money came with the wife, but I could be wrong. Anyhow, here's what I found (link below):

"Secretary of state nominee John Kerry and his wife Teresa Heinz Kerry will divest from their holdings in dozens of companies if he is confirmed to the Obama administration post, the Massachusetts senator said in a letter this month.

As Kerry prepares to go before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee -- which he chairs -- for his confirmation hearing on Thursday, he's signaling that he will work to avoid conflicts of interest linked to the sizeable investments that he in companies including Suncor and Cenovus Energy Inc., both of which would benefit from the State Department's approval of TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline. Kerry's investments are in family trusts.

Kerry, who has an estimated net worth of $193 million, said in a letter to the State Department's Office of the Legal Adviser sent earlier this month that he plans to divest from his interests within 90 days of confirmation.

Kerry also has investments in potentially sensitive companies including AT&T, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Raytheon and Exxon Mobil.

His wife will divest from interests in AT&T, Comcast, and a handful of private equity and other funds. Kerry has also agreed to recuse himself from any official business having to do with H.J. Heinz Company and its related companies."

Before becoming involved in politics, Kerry - a dem2

served heroically in the Vietnam War. (I'd be interested in knowing how many Republicans had the guts to put their lives on the line for their country, while they insist that OTHERS' children be sent off to war.

He then went into politics and has served his country again in Congress for many, many years.

His wife, Terese Heinz-Kerry was first married to John (?) Heinz, who was killed in, I believe, a plane accident. Heinz had quite a bit of money, and from that, Terese has quite a fortune.

A trust fund (when children are involved) probably involves Terese's Heinz' children, and it's a usual thing to set up trust funds. At least her children will get the money from their father's fortune.

Everyone knows that Kerry - served in Vietnam.

[ In Reply To ..]
He made sure of that. He mentioned it in just about every speech and public appearance he made when running for pres. Tooting his own horn.

The OP insinuated that Kerry never worked. - a dem2 (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
which is patently untrue.

I wonder how many Republicans can make the same claim. I know Rush couldn't serve because he had a pimple on his butt.

Cheney got 5 deferments.

I'd love to know how many Republicans served their country by actually fighting one of our many wars. I wonder how many of them are Nam vets, like Kerry.

I did see one Tea Partier question Hillary the other day, and I know he served, along with McCain, but I'd bet not too many others can make that claim. They love to start wars willy nilly but don't actually have the experience of being in combat themselves. How many of Romney's privileged children served their country?

Wars to Republicans are really cool (as long as they or their loved ones are not in any danger). Almost like a video game, I bet.
Probably meant that Kerry - sm

James Madison *(D-R) - War of 181
*Democrat-Republican
James Polk *(JD) - Mexican-American War
*Jacksonian Democracy
William McKinley (R) - Spanish-American War
Woodrow Wilson (D) - WWI
Franklin Roosevelt (D) - WWII
These are actual declared wars, asked for by the president and approved by Congress.

Harry Truman (D) - Korea
Dwight Eisenhower (R) - Vietnam
John Kennedy (D) - Vietnam escalation
Lyndon Johnson (D) - Vietnam escalation
George Bush (R) - Iraq
These are termed "military engagements" - technically wars, but with no formal declaration.

Leaving out the first two, since those parties don't exist anymore, my count is R - 3, D - 5.

And while we're disparaging Cheney for getting those deferments, let's not forget to mention Clinton, who burned his draft card and moved to Canada.

The George Bush in Iraq one is a joke, right? - NM

No, there was no declaration of war - against Iraq.
[ In Reply To ..]
Bush asked to use "military force" - there was never a declaration of war against Iraq or Afghanistan, for that matter.
Don't forget that Kerry also protested the Viet Nam war - which fact he proudly discussed through the years
[ In Reply To ..]
All of a sudden, no mention of it?

BTW, check and see if Cheney had heart problems and that's the reason for his deferment.

I don't know where you got your statistics but it seems they aren't correct...unless you are stating the following were PRESIDENTS during a war.
What statistics? I was rebutting the - poster...

who stated that republicans seem to love to start wars, but not fight in them (see post above mine). Yes, those listed were president when the war started.

Kerry actually did mention it during the hearings yesterday. nm - VTMT

FYI:
Out of the major cabinet members of Obama's "family," listed below, the ONLY ONE who served in the military and also had combat service was Eric Shinseki. I can understand the women not having military service but you would think those that are responsible for the military (DOD/Pentagon)would at least have SOME service background.

Joe Biden
Steven Chu
Hillary Clinton
Shaun Donovan
Arne Duncan
Robert Gates
Timothy Geithner
Eric Holder
Ray LaHood
Gary Locke
Janet Napolitano
Barack Obama
Ken Salazar
Kathleen Sebelius
Eric Shinseki
Hilda Solis
Tom Vilsack

As for former presidents from Harry Truman through GW Bush, ALL served in the military EXCEPT Clinton. In fact, Carter and GW Bush were the only two former presidents who did not have combat service experience.

In the Senate, those that served and had combat service were:
Akaka(D)
Carper (D)
Inouye (D)
Lautenberg (D)
McCain (R)
Warner (R)
Webb (D)

Those who only had military service were:
Bingaman (D)
Blumenthal (D)
Scott Brown (R)
Coats (R)
Cochran (R)
Enzi (R)
Graham (R)
Harkin (D)
Inhofe (R)
Kirk (R)
Kohl (D)
Lugar (R)
Bill Nelson (D)
Jack Reed (D)
Pat Roberts (R)
Sessions (R)
Wicker (R)

Romney/Kerry fortunes - outahere

[ In Reply To ..]
Romney was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, don't really know about Kerry. Yes, Kerry served in Vietnam while GOPers got themselves or their sons deferrments. Example: Romney got a religious deferrment and went to France as a Mormom "missionary" living the good life in private residences while his less wealthy contemporaries laid their lives on the line and died in service to their country. He was born privileged and still believes he is owed privilege and power.

Evidently Kerry came from a wealthy family - Truthhurts

[ In Reply To ..]
You don't attend boarding school or Yale University without money. His mother was Rosemary Forbes (of the Forbes wealth) and his father was a big wig in government.

He attended boarding school in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and went on to graduate from Yale University class of 1966, where he majored in political science and became a member of the influential Skull and Bones secret society.

The group Skull & Bones is virtually unmentioned in mainstream media though it may feature in some conspiracy theories, which claim that the society plays a role in a global conspiracy for world domination. It is true that some prominent families had one or more members as Bonesmen. Theorists such as Alexandra Robbins suggest that Skull & Bones is a branch of the Illuminati,or that Skull & Bones itself controls the Central Intelligence Agency.Others who have written about Skull & Bones were economist Antony C. Sutton, who wrote a book on the group titled America's Secret Establishment: An Introduction to the Order of Skull & Bones and Kris Millegan, who wrote a book on the society in 2003.

As for the wealth question someone else asked earlier, Teresa Heinz Kerry had a net worth of $750 million. Estimates range from $165 million to $3.2 billion.
Kerry is the wealthiest U.S. Senator.

Kerry is wealthy in his own name, and is the beneficiary of at least four trusts inherited from Forbes family members, including his mother, who died in 2002. Forbes magazine (a major business magazine named for an unrelated Forbes family) estimated that if elected, Kerry would have been the third-richest U.S. President in history when adjusted for inflation. This assessment was based on the couple's combined assets, but Kerry and Heinz signed a prenuptial agreement that keeps their assets separate.

Kerry's financial disclosure form for 2011 put his personal assets in the range of $230,000,000 to $320,000,000.

Not really. In fact that is unknowable since Mitt has never disclosed - the extent of his wealth

[ In Reply To ..]
particularly that portion of it that is parked overseas in various tax havens, though he did reveal at least $250 million of it.

As for Kerry's yacht, it was designed in Rhode Island, purchased in Rhode Island, registered in Rhode, is docked in Rhode Island and functions as a charter boat out of Rhode Island.

The bulk of the wealth associated with the Kerry Family derives from his wife's family. After graduation from Yale, Kerry served in the military from 1966 to 1970. His military honors include three Purple Hearts (1968 x1 and 1969 x2), the Silver Star (1969) and the Bronze Star (1969). He was discharged from active duty in March 1970. His anti-Viet Nam war activism spanned about one year before he ran for Congress in 1972.

He received his JD in 1976 after 3 years of graduate studies then served as First Assistant DA until 1979, had a private law practice for a couple of years, then served as Lt Gov of Massachusetts beginning in 1982 and has served in the Senate since 1985.

His dad was a foreign service officer and an attorney and his mom, one of 11 children, was an heir to a relatively modest Forbes Family trust. None of this background would have produced a couple of hundred million in wealth, so the given figure reflects Heinz Family money.
