Houston's new mayor

Posted: Dec 13, 2009

Houston has become the largest US city to elect an openly gay mayor.  The new mayor did not make a secret or an issue of her orientation, but people working in her opponent's campaign did and I think it backfired on them.

It would be nice to think that the age of smear campaigns is over, but I won't be that naive. It is heartening to see such fail, though.

Yay Houston for electing on the issues and not on scare tactics.

Personal hate compaign instead of raising valid issues invariably backfires and its nice to see it happening in this case.

I wish the new mayor all the luck.

The race was pathetic, though. Hardly anyone - voted anyway. nm

Nasty, certainly. Perhaps pathetic. - NJ

It was pathetic, I suppose, that such tactics were used. It still amazes me that, in this day and age, such resentment towards homosexuals can still be thought of as mainstream.

It's not resentment...sm - GGG

It's abhorence for an unnatural and perverse act that is being portrayed as normal. It's always been that way and always will be. And it's more mainstream than most who commit homosexual acts would like to believe.
It is definitely a prejudice and I find that abhorent - and I feel sorry for you

I believe in God and he says it's wrong. If you call believing something to be sinful, a prejudice, then I feel sorry for you. ;-)

Well, I believe God also tells us to love ALL others and only He has he right to judge others, not you or I. No matter what you say, it is a prejudice, and like all prejudices, is based in ignorance and fear.
I'm not even religious, but I disagree with you. If - someone believes in God,

and that their God believes it is wrong, then it does not mean the person has "ignorance or fear". It could mean they plain believe it's wrong and immoral based on their religion. I am not saying it's the right way to think, but this excuse that if someone disagrees, they are full of fear and/or ignorance is a cop-out. Maybe they just plain disagree with your beliefs. Also, someone can "love" another person and still feel that their lifestyle is wrong.
"all prejudices" are not based in ignorance and fear - some are based on experience and belief

Ironically, the groups that most demand tolerance are the ones most intolerant of those who disagree with them.
Loving someone... - GGG

is entirely different than accepting their sins as good or normal when God clearly says they are not. Believing what God tells us is not a prejudice. It's called faith. It has nothing to do with ignorance or fear and all the bullying and name calling in the world by those who expect justification for their sins won't cut it with me. God will judge them but I certainly won't concede that God is wrong and man is right.

Actually, it has not always been that way. Oh, were you just speaking about yourself? Beg pardon if you were. If you were speaking to world history, you are far from correct.

that I am very proud of our city. There is some hoopla going on because she said in her acceptance speech something about it being a very proud day for the gay and transgendered community. People voted for her because of the issues and not because she was gay, and I suspect they were upset that it had to be put in the forefront at that moment.

Me, I don't really care. I loved the movie Harvey Milk, and I love my 'gays.' They are some of the best people I have ever met!

Hopefully, though, we can just put this stuff aside and people can move forward and get ahead based on merit...not the color of their religious leanings, skin, gender, or sexual orientation. All of those things should be moot at this point, IMHO. We vote based on ideals, ideas and goals.

Meh. I edited and messed up the last sentence - Sheeples

Should be color of their skin, religious leanings, gender or sexual orientation.

Oakland's Deputy Mayor Cornu And Dan Siegel, Legal Advisor To MayorNov 14, 2011
How refreshing to see gutsy city officials follow their conscience.  (Reuters) - A top adviser to Oakland Mayor Jean Quan resigned on Monday over the city's handling of anti-Wall Street demonstrations, describing a morning raid to clear a downtown protest camp as a mistake that could trigger more volatility. Civil rights attorney Dan Siegel told Reuters he resigned at 2 a.m., hours before the raid on the Occupy Oakland encampment, after insisting that police should protect, not disma ...

Stabbings In Houston (sm)Apr 09, 2013
There were stabbings at Lone Star College in Houston today.  Some lunatic went around with a weapon slashing randomly.  It's been on the local news for hours now.  Last I heard they are still saying they don't know what the weapon was, at one point said it could have been a knife, a box cutter, or a pencil.  A pencil?  Does that mean Obama will be banning all #2's or just fine points?  Kids also said the stabber looked "psycho."  There's the ...

Hard to know just what to think.  The governor's race was the first thing that popped into my mind.  It is no secret that Bill White can count on a huge turn-out in his favor from here for that bid against Gov Slick Texas Big Hair (He Shoots Coyotes, Doesn't He?) New York City Mayor Gets ItDec 03, 2014
In his address to the issue he referred to the subject of police and the black population by describing how he has to warn his own son, that while the police are to be respected and they are thankful for them, but specifically as a black youth, he has to be extra careful, moreso than a white teen.  This guy is way beyond Gov Nixon's level, but I suppose the Mayor of New York City should be.   Then he repeated the speech in Spanish.  Good for him.  I hope they keep it u ...

Chicago Mayor Is Finding Out The Hard Way That The Democratic Base IsFeb 25, 2015
The liberal wing of the Democratic Party can be susceptible to the “moral victory” fallacy, which in its most degraded form considers a righteous loser preferable to a compromised winner. After all, this is Chicago we’re talking about; incumbent mayors expect to be coronated, not subjected to the indignity ...
