Current pipelines in the US

Posted: Nov 20, 2014

Of interest to those who oppose the Keystone - there are already millions of miles of pipeline in the US from one end to the other.  I have a link to a page that shows maps - the most interesting one is which states rely on natural gas the most.  People in those states probably don't even realize where their natural gas comes from.

For those against the pipeline, do you realize that half of it is already built from Oklahoma to the gulf?  Where were you when that part was built?  It carries oil for the US.  The part that is proposed through North Dakota would carry oil from the Bakken to the gulf.  This is a cooperative effort with Canada - remember Canada?  They are our NEIGHBOR to the north - they have been good neighbors.

The only reason this has become such an issue is that Obama and Reid won't let it pass and the liberal media, who has been in Obama's pocket for 6 years, made an issue out of it.  My question still is, how many of you even realized when the lower half of this pipeline was built?  It didn't make news because it wasn't news.  It was just something that had to be done and it was done.....trying to get Obama to let the other half get finished - that's the problem......

Safety record of current pipelines - Now, there is the problem

Environmental and Safety Record

WIKI:
The Kalamazoo River oil spill occurred in July 2010 when a pipeline operated by Enbridge (Line 6B) burst and flowed into Talmadge Creek, a tributary of the Kalamazoo River. A six-foot break in the pipeline resulted in the largest inland oil spill, and one of the costliest spills, in U.S. history. The pipeline carries diluted bitumen (dilbit), a heavy crude oil from Canada's Athabasca oil sands to the United States. Following the spill, the volatile hydrocarbon diluents evaporated, leaving the heavier bitumen to sink in the water column. Thirty-five miles of the Kalamazoo River were closed for clean-up until June 2012, when portions of the river were re-opened. On March 14, 2013 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ordered Enbridge to return to dredge portions of the river to remove submerged oil and oil-contaminated sediment.

Even before the Michigan accident, Enbridge’s safety record was far from unblemished. Here are some of the more significant spills and other environmental problems since the early 2000s.

In January 2001 a seam failure on a pipeline near Enbridge’s Hardisty Terminal in Alberta spilled more than 1 million gallons of oil.
In July 2002 a 34-inch-diameter pipeline owned by its affiliate Enbridge Energy Partners ruptured in northern Minnesota, contaminating five acres of wetland with about 250,000 gallons of crude oil.

In January 2003 about 189,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the Nemadji River from the Enbridge Energy Terminal in Superior, Wisconsin. Fortunately, the river was frozen at the time, so damage to the waterway was limited.
In 2004 the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) proposed a fine of $11,500 against Enbridge Energy for safety violations found during inspections of pipelines in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. The penalty was later reduced to $5,000. In a parallel case involving Enbridge Pipelines operations in Minnesota, an initial penalty of $30,000 was revised to $25,000.

In January 2007 an Enbridge pipeline in Wisconsin spilled more than 50,000 gallons of crude oil onto a farmer’s field in Clark County. The following month another Enbridge spill in Wisconsin released 176,000 gallons of crude in Rusk County.

In November 2007 two workers were killed in an explosion that occurred at an Enbridge pipeline in Clearbrook, Minnesota. The PHMSA later fined the company $2.4 million for safety violations connected to the incident.

In 2008 the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources charged Enbridge Energy with more than 100 environmental violations relating to the construction of a 320-mile pipeline across much of the state. The agency said that Enbridge workers illegally cleared and disrupted wooded wetlands and were responsible for other actions that resulted in discharging sediment into waterways. In January 2009 the company settled the charges by agreeing to pay $1.1 million in penalties.

In 2009 the PHMSA fined Enbridge Pipelines LLC-North Dakota $105,000 for a 2007 accident that released more than 9,000 gallons of crude oil.

In March 2010 the PHMSA proposed a fine of $28,800 against Enbridge Pipelines LLC for safety violations in Oklahoma.

The huge Michigan spill occurred in July 2010 when an Enbridge pipeline in Michigan ruptured, sending more than 800,000 gallons of crude oil into the Kalamazoo River, a major state waterway that flows into Lake Michigan. Within a couple of days, the spill stretched for some 35 miles. The incident occurred only months after the company was warned that it was not properly monitoring corrosion on the pipeline.

Forbes: (Keystone)

"Pipeline defects have been identified along a 60-mile stretch of the southern segment of the Keystone XL pipeline, north of the Sabine River in Texas (Winnsboro, Texas).
Sections of pipe have dents, faulty welds, and pin-holes in some sections enough to see daylight through.

The installers have been digging up parts of the new southern segment of the Keystone pipeline that only recently have been installed.
It seems that the existing leg of the Keystone has spilled more oil in its first year than any other first-year pipeline in U.S. history (HuffPost).

With the tens of billions of dollars this pipeline will make for these companies each year, you’d think they’d spend a little extra to build it right. Or that they’d care about using new pipe that’s up to specs."

is added to the tar-like crude to make it into a liquid that will flow smoothly through the pipeline.

And that toxic substance is already leaching - into the water sources.

Natural gas lines are also a problem. Look at - what happened in San Bruno.

Where I live, fracked oil rolls through our town every day on its way to Richmond, and there is already a history of prior freight train derailments here. The trains pass within feet of a huge refinery. The specter of a derailed train exploding, and causing an even worse catastrophe if the refinery goes up too, is always hanging over our heads here.

Keystone dead - I hope - sm

Not certain, but I think a big difference is the tar sands oil, the gloppy, toxic, extra energy to make into useable energy oil. AND, just because we built some pipeline doesn't mean building more makes sense. Pipeline in Southern US was for US use, but you are right, I probably wouldn't support that either, now.

Nebraskans correctly pointed out that the contents of this pipe is not crude oil in the sense we know it, but a highly toxic concoction of thick gooey tarsands diluted with lighter weight petroleum products like Naphtha, a known carcinogen capable of causing birth defects and reproductive harm.

Nebraskans came together and said there is no way we will allow 33 million gallons (per day) of this poison to travel under extremely high pressure just a half inch (thickness of the pipe) from our soil and water.

Nebraskans correctly pointed out that Congress’ own House Ways and Means Committee didn’t even consider these tarsands to be oil, which gives the owners and or refiners a tax exemption by not requiring them to pay 8 cents per barrel into the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund like American oil has to pay, saving hundreds of millions of dollars for owners of the tarsands.

Nebraskans weighed in on the outrageous claims of hundreds of thousands of jobs and said, “Phooey!” Even the study done by Nebraska’s own Department of Environmental Quality stated there would be only 15 permanent jobs created in Nebraska.

So, Nebraska “Pipeline Fighters”, as they have come to be known, thank you! Thank you for stopping this ill-conceived project. Thank you for protecting Nebraska’s land, water and rights. Thank you for standing in adversity while those who chose to listen only to pro-pipe lobbying groups splattered us with misconceptions.

It won't benefit us, anyway. The oil will be - going offshore to somewhere else.
