Applebee’s CEO Threatens To Fire Employees And Freeze Hiring Because Of Obamacare

By Annie-Rose Strasser on Nov 9, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Zane Tankel, the CEO of Applebee’s New York Franchise, Apple-Metro, is so dedicated to not spending money on his employees that he’s refusing to hire anyone new. Why? Because he might have to provide them health care.

Under the Affordable Care Act, a business of 50 people or more must provide a health care option for its employees by 2014. The 40 Applebee’s restaurants in New York employ hundreds of people, and Tankel believes providing them with health insurance plans will be too costly. In an appearance on Fox Business News, the CEO said he won’t be able to hire new people because of the law, and even floated the idea of layoffs:

TANKEL: We’ve calculated it will be some millions of dollars across our system. So what does that say — that says we won’t build more restaurants. We won’t hire more people — exactly the opposite of what the President says.

HOST: Do you feel under pressure to move to a more part-time workforce, as other restaurants are doing because of Obamacare?

TANKEL: The model’s been set. I’m sure all our people are watching this right now, so I don’t want to make any commitments one way or another. I just want to say we’re looking at it, we’re evaluating it, if it’s possible to do without cutting people back, I’m delighted to do it. But that also rolls back expansion, it rolls back hiring more people, and in a best-case scenario we only shrink the labor force minimally.

It is virtually impossible that a company the size of Applebee’s will be able to avoid providing health care in the long-term — and it’s not really in their interest, either. Studies have shown that a company that provides health care has a higher retention rate for its employees, reports more employee satisfaction, and draws the best employees to the job.

And although providing his employees with affordable health insurance doesn’t seem to be a priority for Tankel, they likely have no other options when it comes to accessing health care. Many low-wage workers in the restaurant industry often don’t qualify for Medicaid because they earn salaries that are just barely over the threshold, but they also don’t make enough to be able to afford insurance on the private market.

I'll just add Applebees to the list of franchise Casual Dining restaurants I won't go to even though I don't go to them anyhow.

But I could not have said it better than, "Just in case the food alone wasn't good enough reason to not eat there..."

Curious, what has he been doing until now - regarding providing SM

health insurance? Not offering it? Since the article states that these employees have no other option, I assume then they have no insurance and exactly the kind of people that ACA wants to cover? I wonder what profit this company makes year after year? Seems like he is cutting his nose off to spite his face as he says he will not expand now for more profit. He and his board of directors and stockholders are a bunch of greedy despicable human beings.

He was waiting to see if Romney was elected to - repeal Obamacare...I dont blame him ! nm

Of course, he ran for elected office and won...oh wait a minute, no he didn't run for public office, and apparently "his guy" lost. Oops.

Now, that's being a sore loser. Lies didn't win the election, and they - certainly won't roll it back. The schmuck. nm

If I have interpreted correctly the replies to the main topic, it is a perfect example of how Obama supporters relate and feel. Because business is not going to invest more because of the costs, they are the bad guys. Well, as of today, don't know how much longer, but as of today, we still live in a country that allows individuals and businesses to make their own choices regarding spending their own money. If the cost of investing in growth is greater than the profit margin, of course a good business is not going to invest. Sorry, it is certainly not the job of business to be the caretakers of America. That would be Mr. Obama's role.

No profit, no business, simple math.

It's very sad - annieb

That you have no compassion for people who are losing their jobs. I have read a lot of articles about people who are getting ready to be laid off because of Obamacare. This isn't the only place. You claim they are lies, but you do no research. If you researched you would have realized it's real and it aint fun. I lost my job to Obamacare, but I never said anything on this board because posters like you would come back and call me a liar. Maybe I should tell me kids, gee I'm sorry I don't have the money to feed you anything more, but losing my job is just a lie.

The fact of the matter is people are losing their jobs because of Obamacare. Whether the news came out before or after the election doesn't change the facts.

No compassion from the supporters of this calling people who are losing their jobs "schmucks". And who said liberals don't have compassion.

Yes,, there are a ton of companies freezing hiring or - letting people go... Obamacare is a disaster.nm

Funny thing is - when the Dems/Libs that voted for Obama got cut right along with me, you would have thought someone hit them with hot oil. They acted like they were shocked and stunned. What did they think would happen, they they and they alone would get to keep their job?? One of the hospitals I did contract work for is now making plans to close the entire hospital within the next next year. They serve a very rural area. The next closest hospital is 75 miles away. This hospital is the largest employer in the area (employs about 675 to 700 people). It is only a matter of time before this hits all industries.

Actually, starting to look like FRAUD won - it for Obama ! nm

Obama To Propose Wage Freeze For Federal EmployeesNov 29, 2010
Let's watch and see how this goes over. Already Steny Hoyer and the National Federation of Federal Employees are against this proposal. Just imagine if a Muslim school taught this in the United States.
