Tooth abscess leads to $6k?

Posted: Mar 27, 2012

I was pregnant about 7 months ago and I will admit during that time I did not take care of myself. I fell into a depression. I didn't take my vitamins or brushed like I should. I went to the dentist with a tooth abscess that was the size a huge grape. They took x-rays and said it ate a hole in the maxilla and it infected the tooth beside it. The tooth with the abscess is tooth #7, the one next to my buck teeth :) He said he wants to save that dead tooth (it is only hanging now by gums) and pull the next one. My husband and I didn't have a wedding like we planned this Summer so I could get on his dental. Then I find out they have a year waiting on major procedures.... Does anyone think if I get one tooth pulled and try to wait on the other one as long as I can by taking care of my teeth and antibiotics when I need them that I might could make it till next January. I feel like the dentist is pushing me into expensive things I don't have the money for now. He mentioned a few times that I could literally die from the abscess. If antibiotics cleared it up for now or if I just get it pulled what's the harm? Advice from anyone please!;

can you go to a local university dental clinic? - SameBoat

I've been calling today trying to get something going on my dental issues. If you already have an infection with tooth abscess, taking antibiotics in the short-term is fine, but not long term. It will only clear the current infection and in a couple of weeks, you would need them again. Most providers won't give you long-term antibiotics because that is how you get to be antibiotic resistant.

Yes, you could get it pulled. Just remember there are problems with that. Your other teeth will shift without the original tooth there and could throw off your bite, leading to chipped or broken teeth. My sister had the same tooth as you pulled years ago (probably 20) and has never replaced it. I did a Google search and found you could have that tooth pulled for about $1k including anesthesia.

I'm going to make an appointment with a local University that uses dental students for intake evaluation. For $80 I will get an oral examination with full radiographs and a referral to a clinic. At the clinic, I would need either root canal(s) and or pulled teeth followed by implants/partial bridge. This is for two molars that had crowns placed years and years ago and I can't keep the crowns from popping off every few years. I think there is now an abscess under one and the teeth are chipping off down to the gum line. It will probably cost me $4k for all this.

Just remember that with an infection in your jaw, the infection can travel to your heart and you can die of endocarditis.

Some hospitals have dental clinics, especially the big teaching hospitals. Sometimes you do get ripped off by private practice, so do your homework. Call everyone you can think of, even some state offices. Don't go with the first opinion on something big like this. Good luck to you. Don't blame yourself, pregnancy can do s job on your system.

Cat Missing, Broken Tooth, And Apr 28, 2011
I'm having a bad day.  I hate birthdays, just mean that I'm getting older.  The bloom is off the rose.  Glory days far behind me now.  Happy as a mom, though. My cat has been gone for three days and I'm not having a good feeling about his return.  Don't know how to tell my 10yo of Pete's possible demise. Then, a simple cheese cracker breaks my tooth -- nice.  Just gets better and better. I sort of feel like working to take my mind of ...

Teen With Impacted Canine ToothMar 27, 2012
We just found out yesterday that my 15-year-old son who has perfectly straight teeth, still has his left canine baby tooth and an impacted adult tooth above it.  I wasn't given much information other than he probably needs braces.  I've researched it on Google and it sounds horrible.  Braces, bracketing, putting a gold chain on the impacted tooth to pull it down, surgeries, several years of treatment.  Has anyone had anything like this at all happen?  It sounds ...

Santorum: Pre-natal Testing Leads To AbortionFeb 20, 2012
I'm glad Santorum is getting a lot of attention so Americans can see he is friggin nuts. Rick Santorum said on Sunday he believes specific types of pre-natal testing leads to a greater number of abortions. "A lot of pre-natal tests are done to identify deformities in utero and the customary procedure is to encourage abortions," he said. "We know that 90 percent of down syndrome children in America are aborted, so to suggest, where does that come from?" His remarks on CBS's "Fa ...
